No. You do not need to own Star Citizen to play Squadron 42. Roberts Space Industries (RSI) describes Squadron 42 as a standalone, single-player campaign that can be obtained through a pledge containing Squadron 42; Star Citizen is the separate persistent-universe module.
RSI has also described an offline mode in which your computer acts as both the server and the client. However, the game is not released yet. The current RSI and Steam listings target Q2 2027, and Steam currently lists broadband internet and an RSI third-party account for the PC version. That means offline campaign play is part of the documented design, but the final launch rules for authentication, installation, updates and first-run access have not been published.

The practical distinction is between owning Star Citizen and having an RSI account with access to Squadron 42. They are related products in the same universe, but the available descriptions do not make Star Citizen ownership a prerequisite for the campaign.

An eligible Squadron 42 pledge
RSI’s support wording says that, once development is complete and the game has been tested and released, every RSI account that owns a pledge containing Squadron 42 will be able to download and play it. The stated eligibility condition is therefore the Squadron 42 entitlement on your RSI account, not ownership of the persistent-universe game.

This matters because Star Citizen and Squadron 42 were separated into modules. The package-split explanation says buyers can choose the single-player campaign, the persistent universe, or access to both, depending on the pledge. A Star Citizen package by itself should not be treated as proof that it includes Squadron 42; check the exact contents of the pledge associated with your RSI account.
An RSI account
RSI is the account provider for the game ecosystem. Steam’s current PC listing also identifies an RSI third-party account as a requirement. You should therefore expect to link or use an RSI account even if you obtain the PC build through Steam. The account requirement is separate from the question of whether the campaign simulation itself can run without a live connection.
A supported PC release when it arrives
There is no downloadable release to install at present. Any hardware, operating-system and storage requirements shown on a store page can still change before launch, so do not treat a current listing as a final specification sheet. The confirmed availability information is more limited: the game is unreleased and the current schedule is Q2 2027.
How the documented offline mode is supposed to work
Chris Roberts described the offline design in these terms: “If you’re playing off-line, your computer will be acting as the server and client, there will be no opportunities for friends to join and everyone will be an NPC.”

That sentence explains the architecture rather than merely saying “single-player.” In an online shared-world game, a remote server normally controls simulation state and other human players can enter the session. In the described Squadron 42 offline mode, the local computer performs both jobs. The campaign can run without a remote session, while characters who would otherwise be represented by other players are replaced by non-player characters.
What offline play includes
- The story campaign and its local simulation are intended to run on your computer.
- No friends or other human players can join an offline session.
- Other participants in the game world are handled as NPCs.
- The model is consistent with Squadron 42 being a cinematic, single-player adventure rather than a persistent online world.
What the statement does not guarantee
The offline quotation is a 2012 developer statement. It establishes a documented design goal, but it does not specify the final release build’s authentication, copy protection, patching or account-check behavior. A game can support offline simulation while still requiring an internet connection at another point, such as downloading the installer, validating an account on first launch, applying a mandatory update or recovering a password.
For that reason, “offline mode” should be read as “the campaign is designed to operate without a live multiplayer connection,” not as a promise that every installation step will work permanently without internet access.

Why Steam lists broadband internet if the campaign can be offline
Steam’s current listing includes Broadband Internet connection under the PC network requirements and separately requires an RSI third-party account. Those entries are not necessarily a contradiction. Storefront requirement fields often cover the complete product lifecycle: downloading the game, receiving patches, signing in, linking entitlements and accessing any connected services. They do not, by themselves, prove that a remote server must remain connected for every minute of a single-player mission.

The listing also says the game is not yet available. Until RSI publishes the final launch and account policy, there are several realistic connection points:
- Initial acquisition: you will need a connection to download the game from its distribution channel.
- Account and entitlement checks: the launcher or game may need to confirm that your RSI account owns a Squadron 42 entitlement.
- Updates: patches, hotfixes and content changes require internet access when they are released.
- First launch or periodic validation: Steam or RSI could require an online check, but no final frequency or duration has been announced.
- Optional connected features: any account services or cross-module functions would need a connection even if the campaign itself can run locally.
Only the first two items are strongly implied by the current distribution and account listings; the precise launch behavior for the others remains unconfirmed. Do not assume either “always online” or “never online” until RSI issues a final policy.
Is Squadron 42 standalone even though it shares a universe with Star Citizen?
Yes. “Standalone” refers to access and play mode, not to a separate fictional setting. RSI says the two modules remain in the same universe and are functionally connected, while still allowing buyers to choose the single-player campaign or the persistent universe as separate modules.
What the connection means
The shared setting lets the projects use related lore, ships, locations and characters. RSI’s package-split explanation also says that performance in Squadron 42 can affect a player’s career in the persistent universe. That describes a cross-module design relationship; it does not turn Star Citizen ownership into a prerequisite for starting the campaign.

What it does not mean
- You do not need to enter the persistent universe to unlock the Squadron 42 story.
- You should not assume that an offline campaign session becomes a Star Citizen multiplayer session.
- Cross-module progression details may depend on the final account and release implementation, which has not yet been published.
Can you buy or download it now?
No. RSI’s current support page states that Squadron 42 is “currently in development and is not available for download.” Steam likewise marks the game as not yet available. Both current listings give Q2 2027 as the scheduled release window.
Q2 2027 means the second quarter of 2027, but it is a schedule rather than a guarantee that the game will launch on a particular day. Release timing, testing, certification and distribution arrangements can change. If you are deciding whether to purchase access, use the live RSI account and store pages for the latest availability and entitlement wording immediately before buying.

You want only the story campaign
- Create or use an RSI account.
- Choose a pledge that explicitly contains Squadron 42; do not rely on a package name that mentions only the persistent universe.
- After release, download the campaign through the supported distribution method.
- Complete any account or entitlement check required by the final launcher.
- Once installed and updated, use the documented offline mode if the final build preserves that design.
You want the persistent universe as well
You will need access to the Star Citizen module in addition to Squadron 42. The persistent universe is a live-server environment, so it is fundamentally an online experience. Owning or playing it is an additional choice, not a condition imposed on the single-player campaign.
You already have an RSI pledge
Sign in to your RSI account and inspect the pledge’s included items. The relevant test is whether the account owns a pledge containing Squadron 42. If the entitlement is absent, Star Citizen access alone does not establish campaign access.

What to verify before release
Because the game is unreleased, revisit these points shortly before installation:
- Release status: confirm that RSI no longer says the game is unavailable for download.
- Entitlement wording: verify that your RSI account shows Squadron 42, not only Star Citizen access.
- Launcher and storefront rules: check whether Steam and RSI require account linking or a separate launcher.
- Offline behavior: look for a current statement covering campaign play after installation, not only an older design description.
- Authentication: check whether first launch, periodic checks or reactivation require internet access.
- Patch policy: download the latest update before taking the computer offline.
- System requirements: use the final PC requirements rather than an early or provisional listing.
Bottom line for common situations
If your question is “Can I play Squadron 42 without buying Star Citizen?”, the answer supported by RSI’s module descriptions is yes: obtain a pledge containing Squadron 42.
If your question is “Does Squadron 42 require an internet connection?”, the most accurate answer is conditional. The campaign has a documented offline design, but the current Steam listing requires broadband internet and an RSI account, and the final rules for installation and authentication are not yet public.
