Yes, choosing 24MP instead of 50MP can use less storage per photo because it records fewer pixels—but there is no reliable fixed percentage you can apply to every Samsung phone. The actual difference depends on the Galaxy model, camera app and mode, image format, compression, and what the camera captures. The title’s storage result is a personal observation, not a measured universal benchmark.
Why 24MP photos can take up less space
A higher-resolution photo generally needs more storage than a lower-resolution photo. Samsung’s Galaxy S9+ manual describes this general relationship, but it does not establish a 24MP-to-50MP file-size ratio for current Galaxy phones. Pixel count alone cannot tell you exactly how large either photo will be.
Two photos at different resolutions may vary in size because the camera app and mode, compression, scene detail, and file format affect the saved file. A 24MP setting can therefore save space without producing a predictable fraction of the 50MP file size.
Format matters as much as resolution
A fair size comparison holds the format and camera mode constant. Samsung describes JPEG as compressed to save file size, while RAW retains the camera sensor’s original image data for more detailed editing. A JPEG at one resolution and a RAW file at another do not make an apples-to-apples comparison.

Expert RAW has an additional storage consideration: Samsung says it saves both a JPEG and a 16-bit linear DNG. If you use that paired RAW+JPEG workflow, you are saving two files for a capture, so its storage use can differ substantially from a single compressed JPEG. Samsung says Expert RAW is available on Galaxy S20 or later, but feature availability varies by device.
What 24MP means on the Galaxy S24
Samsung’s 24MP fusion explanation is specific to the Galaxy S24. Samsung says the mode combines data from different resolutions. It characterizes 50MP images as providing more detail, while 12MP images use multi-frame synthesis to improve noise and dynamic range. Those are Samsung’s descriptions of its S24 camera approach, not an independent test or a rule for every Galaxy generation.

Samsung’s Expert RAW Galaxy Store listing describes selectable 12MP, 24MP, 50MP, and 200MP DNG options, while warning that some features are not available on all devices. That listing does not mean every Samsung phone has the same 24MP control in its default camera app.

To find out what the change saves on your own phone, compare several similar captures made with the same app, mode, and file format. Keep the scene and lighting as consistent as practical, then compare the resulting file sizes. A single pair can be misleading because image content and processing can change how much data is stored.

- Identify your Galaxy model and the camera app you use; do not assume a 24MP setting is available in the same place on every model.
- Choose 24MP and 50MP in the same app and capture mode, if both options are offered.
- Keep the output format the same for both sets of photos. If the app saves RAW plus JPEG, account for both files rather than comparing only one.
- Take multiple matched captures and compare their file sizes. To report a useful result, state the phone, app, mode, resolution, and file type alongside the measurements.
For image quality, judge the photos at the viewing size and crop you actually use. The S24-specific trade-off Samsung describes—more detail at 50MP versus processing benefits associated with 12MP—does not by itself establish how 24MP will look on another model or in every scene.
