Pink or purple grow lights can provide light that supports broccoli growth, but their color alone does not show that they will grow broccoli better. Studies have tested particular red, blue, green, far-red and white light treatments—mostly on broccoli microgreens—and results vary with light intensity, crop stage and whether the goal is more biomass or particular nutritional compounds.
Why a grow light looks pink—and what that tells you
Many pink or purple grow lights combine red and blue LEDs. That visible appearance is not, by itself, a measure of the spectrum or the amount of light reaching the plant. The studies available compare specified light treatments; they do not establish that any lamp that looks pink will outperform broad-spectrum white light across broccoli varieties and growth stages.
For a useful comparison, look at the lamp’s stated spectrum and the intensity delivered at plant level, not just the color it appears to emit. The result also depends on what you are growing and what outcome matters: fresh growth, dry mass or selected quality traits.
What studies of broccoli under LEDs have found
Microgreens respond to particular spectra, not to “pink” as a universal category
A 2023 study compared red, blue and far-red treatments and combinations with white light for broccoli, cabbage and radish microgreens. Its results concern those specified treatments and young plants, not mature broccoli heads. A 2020 study of Brassica microgreens likewise found responses to red-blue and red-green-blue combinations that varied by variety. These findings support studying LED spectra, but do not identify one universally best color for broccoli.

Far-red deserves a distinction: it is not the same thing as the red-and-blue mix commonly described as pink. A 2025 paper examined supplemental far-red for broccoli microgreens under low-light conditions, a different treatment and context from a typical pink LED.
More biomass and selected nutritional traits can favor different intensities
In a 2021 South China Agricultural University trial, researchers grew broccoli microgreens under red:green:blue LEDs in a 1:1:1 ratio and tested intensities of 30, 50, 70 and 90 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹. Of those tested levels, 50 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹ produced the highest fresh weight, dry weight and moisture content. The study reported 70 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹ as more feasible for improving several measured phytochemicals. Those are trial-specific results, not universal home-growing settings; the best result depended on the endpoint.

Results from florets are a different kind of evidence
A 2022 study examined short-duration pre-harvest LED lighting on mature Tenderstem broccoli florets. That crop stage and treatment context differ from growing seedlings or microgreens. It should not be treated as proof that a pink lamp improves broccoli from seed to harvest.

Prioritize adequate light rather than a particular visual color. Penn State Extension notes that seedlings can become leggy and fragile when light is insufficient; that guidance supports avoiding inadequate light, but does not prescribe a universal lamp distance, daily schedule, wattage or pink spectrum for every setup.

- Choose a light based on its stated spectrum and the intensity it delivers at the canopy, rather than whether it looks pink or purple.
- Match expectations to the crop stage: findings on broccoli microgreens do not automatically apply to mature heads.
- Decide what you want to optimize. A treatment associated with more weight need not be the same treatment associated with higher values for particular phytochemicals.
- Do not assume a specific distance or lighting duration from the study figures alone; the cited experiments do not establish a universal home specification.
The evidence reviewed does not provide a general percentage for how much pink light improves broccoli growth, nor does it establish a best consumer lamp. For a particular setup, the lamp’s actual spectrum and delivered intensity matter more than its color to the eye.
