Short answer: NPCTalk is officially documented for Windows GTA V Story Mode. Its example lets you speak to nearby characters through a microphone. FiveM compatibility is not documented, and a FiveM multiplayer server should not be treated as compatible with the Story Mode setup. A modded Story Mode installation may work when its GTA V build, script hooks, launcher and other mods meet NPCTalk’s requirements, but there is no universal compatibility guarantee. NPCTalk is not for GTA Online: its project rules say never to launch GTA Online with a script hook installed.

This distinction matters because “GTA V” is not one interchangeable installation. Story Mode, FiveM and GTA Online use different launch paths, files, plug-ins and rules.

NPCTalk describes itself as a toolkit to “Make any NPC in any game talk back with Fish Audio” and says it was “Built first for GTA V.” Its concrete GTA V prompt is: “In GTA V story mode, let me talk to anyone near me with my mic.” The repository includes a full GTA V example with an open-mic workflow, 19 characters, character actions and a developer mode.
That is a specific, local single-player scenario, not a general statement that every GTA V mode, server or mod collection is supported. The project also states its operating boundary as “Single-player games, or servers you run.” It says it does not inject into online games with anti-cheat and does not bypass anti-cheat, DRM or ownership checks.

In practical terms, NPCTalk is intended to observe your microphone input, associate you with nearby Story Mode characters and return generated dialogue and actions through the modded game session. The documented interaction accessory is therefore a working microphone; a USB gaming microphone is a straightforward choice for open-mic or push-to-talk use, although the project does not identify a tested model.
Using NPCTalk in GTA V Story Mode
Why Story Mode is the supported case
Story Mode runs locally and is the mode shown in the project’s GTA V example. Rockstar support describes Story Mode as generally not requiring an internet connection and documents an offline launch argument for PC Story Mode. That local model matches NPCTalk’s stated single-player boundary: the mod can run in the game process without entering an anti-cheat-protected online session.

These are software and platform prerequisites, not a promise that every PC edition or game build will behave identically. The documentation does not publish a complete matrix covering every GTA V update, launcher, graphics edition or third-party mod.
A safe installation sequence
- Prepare a clean Story Mode profile. Back up your GTA V files and saves before adding a script hook or NPCTalk. Keep this profile for offline, single-player testing rather than mixing it with the files you use to enter online services.
- Confirm the platform requirements. Use Windows, install the .NET SDK 8 or later, Python 3.10 or later, Git,
uvandffmpeg. Verify that each tool is available to the account that will launch the example. - Make sure GTA V starts normally first. A game that cannot reach an unmodified Story Mode session has a launcher, installation or save problem that NPCTalk cannot fix.
- Apply the project’s GTA V example exactly as documented. The repository’s example is the authoritative place for its files, configuration and launch procedure. Do not substitute a FiveM plug-in directory or an Online installation for the Story Mode location.
- Connect and test the microphone. Select the intended Windows input device, set a usable input level and test open-mic or push-to-talk in a quiet area of Story Mode before changing character or graphics mods.
- Test one change at a time. Confirm that a nearby character responds, then enable additional actions or developer mode. If a new mod breaks the session, remove that last change rather than reinstalling everything at once.
The project can report its own voice-match and word-error measurements, but those are project-reported evaluations rather than an independent guarantee of recognition quality on your computer. Microphone quality, background noise, language, network services and CPU/GPU load can all affect the experience.
Can NPCTalk be used with FiveM?
FiveM is a separate environment
FiveM is not simply a Story Mode switch. Its installation guide requires an updated GTA V installation and then installs a separate FiveM client. Its manual describes a customized single-player mode, requires a valid save from the original game and places plug-ins in a FiveM application-data plug-ins folder. FiveM servers can disallow plug-ins, and an outdated or incompatible plug-in can crash the client.

What is missing for an official compatibility claim
The NPCTalk material examined for this topic contains no FiveM resource, CitizenFX script, server artifact or FiveM setup instructions. It does not explain how NPCTalk would attach to FiveM’s client, how a server would authorize it, or where its files would be installed. Because those integration details are absent, direct FiveM multiplayer support is unverified, not confirmed.
A community experiment that happens to work should be described as anecdotal. It could stop working after a FiveM update, be blocked by a server’s plug-in policy or conflict with another client modification. Success in a local Story Mode install does not transfer automatically to FiveM’s plug-in model.
What about FiveM’s customized single-player mode?
FiveM’s customized single-player option still uses the FiveM client and its own application-data structure. A valid Story Mode save is required, but that does not mean a Story Mode script hook is loaded there. Unless NPCTalk publishes a FiveM-specific resource or instructions, treat this mode as unsupported rather than as a shortcut to Story Mode compatibility.

Will NPCTalk work with a modded GTA V Story Mode installation?
The answer depends on the exact stack
NPCTalk is itself presented as a GTA V mod example, so a mod-capable Windows Story Mode environment is expected. However, “modded” can mean different game builds, script-hook versions, launchers, loaders and collections of .asi, DLL or framework-based mods. NPCTalk’s README does not provide a complete compatibility matrix for those combinations.

Compatibility is most likely when the following conditions are true:
- The installation is the Windows PC edition supported by the example.
- The GTA V build and script-hook mechanism match what the example expects.
- The launcher starts local Story Mode without forcing an Online session.
- Other mods do not replace the same files, intercept the same hooks or consume the same input events.
- The computer meets the listed .NET, Python,
uv,ffmpegand microphone requirements.
Legacy and Enhanced need separate testing
GTA V Legacy and GTA V Enhanced are different installations. A mod that works in one edition is not automatically portable to the other because binaries, hook support and mod loaders can differ. Keep separate backups and do not copy a working NPCTalk setup from one edition into the other without checking the project’s current instructions.

How to isolate conflicts
- Duplicate or back up the clean Story Mode installation.
- Install only the components required by the NPCTalk example.
- Launch Story Mode and verify microphone interaction.
- Add existing mods in small groups, restarting after each group.
- When the failure returns, remove half of the last group and retest to identify the conflicting component.
This method distinguishes an NPCTalk problem from a hook, loader, game-build or unrelated-mod problem. Keep a written list of file versions and the order in which they were added; the project does not promise support for every mod list.
Why GTA Online is off-limits
Do not launch GTA Online with a script hook installed. NPCTalk’s project rule is explicit: “It never injects into online games with anti-cheat (GTA V: never launch GTA Online with a script hook installed).” The same rule says it never bypasses anti-cheat, DRM or ownership checks.
Use physically or procedurally separate Story Mode and Online environments: remove or disable the script-hook and mod files before entering Online, follow Rockstar’s current Story Mode mod-policy guidance and keep backups outside the live game directory. A successful Story Mode test is not evidence that Online will accept the files, and attempting to find out can create account or installation risk.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game starts, but no character responds
- Check that you launched the documented GTA V Story Mode example, not FiveM or Online.
- Confirm Windows is using the intended microphone and that its input level moves when you speak.
- Test the documented open-mic or push-to-talk control in a quiet area near one of the example characters.
- Review that .NET 8+, Python 3.10+,
uvandffmpegare installed for the same Windows account running the example.
The game crashes while loading
- Restore the last known-good Story Mode backup.
- Remove the most recently added mod or hook and test NPCTalk by itself.
- Check whether the GTA V edition or build changed; Legacy and Enhanced should be treated as separate targets.
- Do not move Story Mode files into FiveM’s plug-in directory as a workaround.
FiveM refuses the plug-in or the server disconnects
That behavior is consistent with FiveM’s documented plug-in controls: servers may disallow plug-ins and incompatible ones may crash the client. Because NPCTalk has no documented FiveM integration, there is no supported configuration to troubleshoot. Remove the unverified plug-in and use the official Story Mode example instead.
Dialogue is delayed or inaccurate
Separate compatibility from response quality. Once the game hook and microphone work, delays or recognition errors may come from input noise, processing load or the external voice-generation path. The project’s internal voice measurements are not independent benchmarks and should not be used to promise a particular latency or word-error rate.
Which setup should you choose?

The practical decision is straightforward: use NPCTalk in the Windows Story Mode configuration it documents; treat FiveM as unsupported until an official integration appears; and test modded Story Mode installations incrementally. Never use the script-hook installation to launch GTA Online.
