Apple’s published iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 notes do not confirm that the update changed the Notification Center gesture. The claim comes from individual users discussing an interaction they associate with Siri AI; without a reproducible test on a specified device, software build, and settings, it should be treated as a report—not a universal change.
What is the iOS 27 Notification Center claim?
A Reddit discussion titled “iOS 27 breaks 15 years of muscle memory on iPhone and iPad” alleges that opening Notification Center behaves differently when Siri AI is enabled. The discussion records user reports and reactions, not controlled testing or an Apple-confirmed change: Reddit discussion.

The “15 years” wording is not a measured statistic. The available sources do not establish how many people are affected, whether the behavior occurs on both iPhone and iPad, or whether Siri AI causes it.
What do Apple’s iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 notes say?
Apple announced the availability of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 on September 14, 2026. Its September 29 iPadOS 27 update notes document Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features, Liquid Glass readability refinements, system performance improvements, better search, and the ability to resize iPhone apps running on iPad. They do not mention the alleged Notification Center gesture change: Apple’s iPadOS 27 update notes.

Apple describes the broader iPad update this way: “And with improvements that span design, performance, connectivity, search, and more, the experience on iPadOS 27 has been refined and elevated, so it feels even better to use.” That is Apple’s characterization of the update, not independent evidence about this particular gesture.
A Tom’s Guide article describes a paste suggestion above the keyboard as an iOS 27 convenience feature, but it does not corroborate the Notification Center allegation: Tom’s Guide.

Could Siri AI availability explain why experiences differ?
The allegation is conditional on Siri AI, and Apple Intelligence availability depends on device, language, and region. Apple’s September 2026 announcement listed iPhone 16 models and later, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad models with M1 or later among eligible hardware. At that time, Siri AI was initially unavailable on iOS and iPadOS in the EU, while Apple Intelligence features were unavailable in China as Apple addressed regulatory requirements. Availability can change, so consult Apple’s current announcement and feature-availability information for your location: Apple Newsroom.
Do not confuse compatibility with the operating-system update and eligibility for Apple Intelligence. The Associated Press reported that the general iOS 27 update supports devices dating back to iPhone 11, while Apple Intelligence is limited to newer devices: Associated Press. An iPhone that can install iOS 27 therefore may not be able to use the AI features mentioned in the user reports.

How to check whether the gesture changed on your device
To determine whether the report applies to your setup, compare the behavior while changing one factor at a time. Record the exact iPhone or iPad model, iOS or iPadOS version and build, Siri AI setting, region, and language. Then compare Notification Center access with Siri AI enabled and disabled, if the feature is available to you. This is a way to investigate your own device, not a confirmed workaround or proof that the AI setting causes a change.
- If the behavior differs, repeat the comparison after checking that the device, build, region, and language are unchanged.
- If it does not differ, the discussion may not describe your model or configuration.
- Check Apple’s latest point-release notes and feature-availability information, since software behavior and regional rollout can change.
As of the cited Apple notes, no official source documents this specific gesture change. A definitive claim would require reproducible results tied to the hardware, build, and settings tested.
