There is no public confirmation that Grab sends your chats, precise location or payment details directly to OpenAI. Grab’s Privacy Notice effective 8 October 2025 says it collects those kinds of information, may use “manual or automated means, including AI services,” and may disclose personal data to broad groups of providers. However, the notice does not name OpenAI. OpenAI’s own privacy and location policies explain what OpenAI does with data it receives, but they do not establish that Grab supplies it. The accurate conclusion is therefore limited: Grab permits broad data sharing and AI use, while a Grab-to-OpenAI transfer remains unconfirmed by the public policies reviewed.
What the current Grab notice actually confirms
Grab’s Privacy Notice, effective 8 October 2025, describes the information it collects and the purposes for using it. The notice is important because it separates three questions that are often conflated: what Grab collects, why Grab processes it, and which recipients it identifies. It does not list OpenAI by name.
Grab says it can process information that users provide directly, information generated while they use Grab features, and information collected passively from transactions and devices. The notice covers support interactions, in-app communications, mapping and live-location functions, and payment activity. It also says Grab may use the information for service delivery, safety, fraud prevention, research, testing, machine learning and product development.

That wording gives Grab permission to use AI-related systems in providing services, but it does not identify a particular model provider, cloud vendor or subcontractor. A policy statement that AI services may be used is not the same as a disclosure naming OpenAI as a recipient.

Does Grab collect your chats and messages?
Support and communication content
Grab’s notice lists support chats, messages and calls among information users may provide. It also covers interactions with other users through in-app communication features. Depending on the feature, this can include the content of a conversation and associated account details needed to route, secure or support the interaction.
What another chat participant can see
The notice says: “If you use our in-app chat service, we may share your Grab-registered name and profile photo with the other parties to your chat.” This is a disclosure to the people participating in that Grab conversation, not evidence that the chat is sent to OpenAI. The notice does not state that OpenAI receives the conversation, nor does it identify an AI provider that processes every chat.
Why Grab says it uses communication data
Grab describes uses connected to operating and improving its services: customer support, safety, fraud prevention, testing, research, machine learning and product development. Those purposes can involve automated processing, but the public notice does not disclose which messages, if any, are sent to an external AI company or how long a particular message is retained.
Does Grab send your location to ChatGPT or OpenAI?
Precise location collection
Grab says it collects precise location for map and live-location features when the user grants permission. Location can therefore be part of a ride, delivery or navigation request. The notice also distinguishes information needed to provide a feature from information used for safety, fraud prevention or service improvement.

Location sharing inside Grab’s services
Grab lists drivers and delivery partners, merchants and emergency contacts among parties that may receive personal data for stated service or safety purposes. It also mentions Family Profile administrators, employers or community administrators where those relationships apply. These disclosures explain how location-related information can move within the Grab ecosystem and connected services; they do not show that OpenAI receives it.
No named OpenAI location transfer
The current notice does not name OpenAI, ChatGPT or an OpenAI location product as a recipient. Claims that Grab automatically sends every ride or live-location record to OpenAI therefore go beyond what the policy establishes. A newer product-specific notice, vendor disclosure or contract could change the answer, but it would need to identify that relationship directly.
What payment and transaction information can Grab process?
Transaction data listed by Grab
Grab says it passively collects transaction information, including your payment method, settlement records, and items purchased or paid through Grab. This is broader than a card number alone: it can describe how a transaction was funded, whether it settled, and what service or item was involved.
Payment-related disclosures
Grab identifies payment processors, credit and risk providers, finance or insurance partners and other service providers as possible recipients for stated purposes. It also says that, if you authorize and enable a third party’s payment method to connect to Grab’s payment service, Grab may share your personal data with another individual to enable payment. The notice’s example is conditional on that connection and authorization.

What the notice does not establish
Nothing in the reviewed notice says that OpenAI receives Grab payment methods, settlement records or purchase details. The mention of AI services does not convert every category of collected data into an OpenAI disclosure. Payment processing and AI-assisted product development are separate policy purposes unless a notice explicitly connects them.
Who does Grab say may receive personal data?
Grab’s disclosure section uses categories rather than a single complete vendor list. The following table reflects the groups named in the notice and the kinds of reasons associated with them.

Grab also says personal data may be transferred internationally for centralized processing, storage, support and service delivery, subject to applicable safeguards. The country where a server or provider is located is not identified in the notice as an OpenAI connection.

Is Grab using OpenAI for an AI chatbot?
The public policy evidence does not answer that product-level question. Grab says it may use “manual or automated means, including AI services” when providing services and features, but it does not name the AI supplier. A chatbot could be built internally, supplied by a third party, or changed over time without the general privacy notice identifying the implementation.

To verify a specific Grab chatbot, look for a product-specific privacy notice, an in-product disclosure, a developer or vendor statement, or a contract that names OpenAI. Without one of those documents, the responsible wording is “Grab’s policy allows AI-service use” rather than “Grab uses OpenAI.”
What OpenAI’s own policies say if it receives data
OpenAI’s general privacy policy says OpenAI may collect content, geolocation, transaction history and payment information. It describes using content to provide and improve OpenAI services and disclosing personal data to vendors, service providers, affiliates, authorities and other parties with whom a user interacts. Those statements explain OpenAI’s handling rules for data that reaches OpenAI through an OpenAI product or another disclosed integration.
They do not prove that Grab is the source. A company’s general policy necessarily describes possible data categories and recipients across its products; it is not a vendor map for every other company that mentions AI. The missing link is a public document showing that Grab transmits a defined data set to OpenAI.

OpenAI’s location guidance says users can manage location permission in ChatGPT settings. It also says ChatGPT does not separately save or store precise location outside the information included in the conversation and context. For local results, location may be shared with trusted third-party providers.

This guidance applies to location supplied to ChatGPT. It should not be read as a statement about Grab’s ride or delivery systems. If you never provide Grab data to ChatGPT, OpenAI’s location-handling description does not by itself give OpenAI access to your Grab location history.
Temporary chats, retention and model improvement
OpenAI’s consumer-data guidance says temporary chats stay out of chat history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve OpenAI models while they remain temporary. OpenAI says temporary chats may nevertheless be retained for up to 30 days for safety.
That control is relevant when you personally paste a Grab message, receipt or location into ChatGPT. It does not control what Grab retains under Grab’s notice, and it does not turn an unconfirmed Grab-to-OpenAI relationship into a confirmed one. The two companies’ controls operate on different sides of a possible data flow.
How to reduce exposure in practice
Review Grab permissions
- Open your phone’s app-permission controls for Grab and check whether precise location is allowed while using the app, always, or not at all.
- Disable location access when you do not need maps, live-location sharing or location-dependent safety features; expect those features to stop working or become less accurate.
- Review which Grab communication, family, employer or community features you have enabled, because those settings can determine who else receives account or trip information.
Limit the data you place in chats
- Do not paste payment card numbers, one-time passcodes, full receipts or exact home addresses into an AI chat unless the service requires it.
- Redact names, booking identifiers and precise locations before asking for help with a Grab message or dispute.
- Remember that deleting a message from your screen may not delete copies held for safety, support, fraud prevention or legal reasons.
Use ChatGPT controls deliberately
- In ChatGPT settings, review location permission and turn it off when local results do not require it.
- Use a temporary chat for a one-off question containing sensitive Grab context when you do not want it in chat history or memory; temporary chats may still be retained up to 30 days for safety.
- Do not assume that a temporary ChatGPT conversation changes Grab’s own retention or disclosure practices.
How to evaluate a claim that Grab sends data to OpenAI
Ask four specific questions before accepting the claim:
- Which Grab product? A general ride, delivery or payment policy may not describe a separate chatbot or experiment.
- Which data? “User data” is too vague; look for chat content, precise location, payment method, settlement records or another defined field.
- Which document names OpenAI? A named vendor list, product notice or contract is stronger evidence than a generic reference to AI services.
- When and where does it apply? Check the notice’s effective date, country, account type and international-transfer language.
If a statement cannot answer those questions, describe it as unverified. Policies can authorize a category of processing without proving that a particular vendor is currently used.
Bottom line on Grab and OpenAI
Grab’s 8 October 2025 Privacy Notice confirms collection of chats and other interactions, permission-based precise location, and transaction information such as payment method and settlement records. It permits disclosure to numerous operational and business categories and says AI services may be used. It does not name OpenAI. OpenAI’s policies describe how OpenAI handles content, location and payment data that it receives, but they do not establish a Grab integration. Based on the public policies available, you should treat “Grab sends your data to OpenAI” as unconfirmed, not as a documented fact.
