Gemini for Home is designed to wait in standby for its activation phrase, not send ordinary standby speech to Google. Once activated, it sends the request for processing; accidental activation is possible, and conversation features can intentionally keep the microphone active for follow-ups. What Google processes, what appears in Home History, and whether audio recordings may be used to improve services are separate questions—with separate controls.
Does Gemini for Home listen to conversations?
Google says Gemini for Home waits in standby until it detects an activation phrase such as “Hey Google.” Its privacy documentation states: “When in standby mode, your Gemini for Home voice assistant won’t send what you are saying to Google or anyone else.” That describes Google’s stated behavior; it is not an independent device test. Google also acknowledges that a sound resembling the activation phrase can trigger an accidental activation. After activation, the request is sent to Google servers for processing. “Listening” can also mean different things: standby detection, sending an activated request for service processing, saving activity in your account, or opting in to use audio recordings to improve services. Those are not interchangeable.
What happens to an activated request?
When the assistant is activated, it processes the request to provide a response. With Home History on, activity such as voice-assistant queries is saved in My Activity and used to develop and improve Google services, including generative AI models. That saved activity does not mean every interaction is stored as an audio recording: Google distinguishes activity and transcripts from recordings.

Even when Home History is off, Google says activity may be retained for up to 24 hours for service provision, safety and security, and feedback processing. How are Home History and audio recording use different?
Home History determines whether activity is saved to your account and the applicable auto-delete schedule. A separate setting, “Improve Google services with your voice, audio, and Gemini Live recordings,” controls optional use of recordings for service improvement. Google says this setting is off by default and requires Home History to be on before it can be enabled. The default Home History auto-delete period is 18 months; Google also allows 3- or 36-month periods, disabling auto-delete, reviewing or deleting activity, or turning Home History off. Why might the microphone stay active after activation?
Gemini Live
During an active Gemini Live conversation, the microphone remains active so you can continue speaking; Google says an on-device indicator shows when the session is listening. End the conversation verbally or stop talking and allow the session to close after inactivity. Check the indicator rather than assuming that an initial question ends the listening session. Continued Conversation

How do you turn off voice recording on Google Home?
For ordinary account activity, use Home History controls. For optional recording-based service improvement, use the separately named voice, audio, and Gemini Live recordings setting. For immediate privacy, use the device’s microphone control; switch locations and indicators vary by model, so consult that device’s instructions rather than assuming one universal control.
- Review assistant behavior: In the Google Home app, open Profile or Initial → Home settings → Gemini for Home voice assistant. Review options such as Continued Conversation, “Hey Google” sensitivity, Voice Match, Personal Results, and Data & access. Menu names can change with app updates. Google’s assistant settings guidance
- Review or disable Home History: Open Home settings → Home features → Privacy → Home History in the Home app, or go to My Activity. From there, review or delete activity, turn Home History off, or change the auto-delete period. The up-to-24-hour service-retention policy still applies when history is off. Home History controls
- Keep optional recording improvement off: Leave “Improve Google services with your voice, audio, and Gemini Live recordings” off, or turn it off in Home History if it was enabled. It is off by default. Recording improvement setting
- End a live session: For Gemini Live, end the conversation verbally or let it close after inactivity, and watch the microphone indicator. Conversation controls
- Use the hardware mute when needed: For the strongest immediate stop to microphone input, use the microphone control on the specific speaker or display and check its instructions for the control’s location and status indicator.
What should household members and guests know?
Gemini for Home is available to the household, and household members should review their own activity settings. On a shared device, Guest Mode can prevent recordings and voice-assistant activity from being saved to the device owner’s account while Guest Mode is on. It is not a blanket pause on every related record: interactions with other Google services and third-party apps or actions may still save associated activity.
