No. Irish Rail currently lists full trolley service on every Dublin–Cork train, catering on Dublin–Belfast Enterprise services, and a six-month trolley pilot on selected Dublin–Galway departures. Other Republic of Ireland intercity routes do not currently have catering listed. The answer depends on the route, direction, day and individual departure, so check Irish Rail’s current onboard catering information before travelling.
Which Irish Rail routes have trolley service?
| Route | What Irish Rail lists | Coverage and payment |
|---|---|---|
| Dublin–Cork | Full trolley service | Every service in both directions; cash and card accepted. |
| Dublin–Galway | Trolley service on selected trains as a six-month pilot that began August 24, 2026 | Three listed departures each way daily at launch; card only. Times differ on Sundays. |
| Dublin–Belfast Enterprise | Full catering, light-menu catering or trolley-only service, depending on the departure | Check the current table for the specific direction and day. The categories are not interchangeable. |
| Other Republic of Ireland intercity routes | No catering currently listed by Irish Rail | The operator says it cannot provide catering on these routes at the moment. |
The route descriptions and service details are from Irish Rail’s catering page. It also lists free water refill stations at a number of stations; these can help with preparation but do not replace onboard food or drink service.
Which Dublin–Galway trains have a trolley?
The pilot covers selected trains for the whole journey, not every Dublin–Galway service. At launch, Irish Rail listed these departures:
| Day | From Dublin Heuston | From Galway |
|---|---|---|
| Monday–Saturday | 07:35, 09:25, 11:30 | 11:05, 13:05, 15:05 |
| Sunday | 08:00, 10:30, 11:40 | 11:00, 13:40, 15:00 |
The 07:35 Friday departure from Heuston involves a change at Athlone. The pilot accepts card only. These times describe the launch timetable; pilot coverage and timetables can change, so verify the specific train on Irish Rail’s current catering page before setting out.

Why isn’t there a trolley on every train?
Irish Rail says catering on Dublin–Cork and Dublin–Belfast has been provided within the Public Service Obligation (PSO) funding envelope available under its contract with the National Transport Authority. The Dublin–Galway trial is different: it is a commercial arrangement without PSO funding, intended to test whether catering on more intercity services could be commercially viable. Irish company Sambos.ie operates the pilot, and Irish Rail said it might extend the trial to more services or routes during its six-month term. The operator’s pilot announcement does not publish a catering budget, tender-cost comparison or break-even target.
In an October 1, 2026 interview on The Claire Byrne Show, Iarnród Éireann Corporate Communications Manager Barry Kenny attributed the limits to the previous operator being unable to continue after COVID-era disruption, higher costs when catering was tendered, and constraints on NTA funding. The interview transcript, hosted by Podscan.fm, records Kenny saying: “We want catering on all the trains, but the money isn’t there right now.” The transcript is not hosted by the broadcaster; consult the audio if exact broadcast wording matters.

How to check whether your train has catering
- Open Irish Rail’s Catering On-board Trains page.
- Find your route and check the specific direction and day. On Enterprise, note whether the listing says full catering, light-menu catering or trolley-only.
- For Dublin–Galway, compare your departure with the pilot timetable and confirm it remains in operation for your travel date.
- Check the payment note for the service: Dublin–Cork accepts cash and card, while the Galway pilot is card only.
Do not infer that a train has a trolley just because it runs on a route where some services do. Irish Rail’s current details are route- and departure-specific.
