No. Native DLSS Frame Generation is not a universal switch. A game must include NVIDIA’s Frame Generation integration, expose the feature in its graphics settings, and meet the title’s engine, API, driver and GPU requirements. An RTX 40-series or newer card by itself cannot add native Frame Generation to a game that was never integrated. NVIDIA’s separate Smooth Motion driver feature can interpolate frames in some unsupported titles, but it is a different technology and must not be used at the same time as native DLSS Frame Generation.

What “DLSS Frame Generation support” actually means

Native support means the game developer integrated NVIDIA’s DLSS Frame Generation or Streamline path into the game and connected it to the engine’s rendering and presentation systems. The game must supply motion information that the feature cannot obtain reliably from a generic driver toggle, including engine motion vectors and sequential rendered frames. DLSS then combines those inputs with optical-flow data to synthesize an intermediate frame between two rendered frames.

Because the engine supplies that information, support is decided on a game-by-game basis. Two games using the same engine can expose different options, and a game can gain or lose compatibility through patches, API changes, driver behavior or settings. A title may support DLSS Super Resolution while omitting Frame Generation entirely; those are separate features.

Which GPUs support each DLSS feature?

NVIDIA’s published hardware split assigns standard native DLSS Frame Generation to GeForce RTX 40-series GPUs, based on the Ada architecture. RTX 50-series cards also support the standard single-generated-frame path, while their newer Multi Frame Generation mode is separate. RTX 20-, 30- and 40-series cards support DLSS Super Resolution, which upscales a lower-resolution render but does not provide native Frame Generation on RTX 20 or RTX 30.

Can an RTX 3060 use DLSS Frame Generation?

Not through native DLSS Frame Generation. The RTX 3060 can use DLSS Super Resolution in games that support it, but NVIDIA’s hardware table does not assign native Frame Generation to RTX 20- or RTX 30-series GPUs. A driver-level feature such as Smooth Motion may work in particular titles and driver/platform combinations, but that is not the same as native DLSS Frame Generation and should be checked against current driver support.

Documented software and engine requirements

NVIDIA’s Unreal Engine quick-start requirements describe the environment for the documented plugin path. They are useful when diagnosing a PC game, but a shipped title can add its own restrictions.

Requirement Documented condition Why it matters
Operating system 64-bit Windows 10 20H1/version 2004, build 19041, or newer The plugin and its graphics features require a supported Windows graphics stack
GPU NVIDIA Ada architecture, including GeForce RTX 40 series or RTX 6000 series Native Frame Generation relies on hardware capabilities not assigned to RTX 20/30 in NVIDIA’s table
GPU scheduling Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling enabled The documented path lists HWS as a prerequisite for the intended scheduling behavior
Driver GeForce driver 531.18 or newer is recommended for that guide Older drivers may lack required fixes or integration support
Graphics API DirectX 12 project The quick-start path targets a DX12 rendering and presentation model
Unreal Engine version Unreal Engine 5.2 supports the plugin out of the box; 5.1 and earlier need additional engine-source changes Engine version affects whether developers can enable the integration without source modifications

Unity and other engines can expose DLSS through their own integrations. The engine name alone does not guarantee a player-facing option: the developer still has to ship the integration, configure it correctly and decide which GPUs, APIs and settings are supported.

How to check whether a particular game supports it

  1. Open the game’s graphics or display settings. Look for a setting specifically named “DLSS Frame Generation,” “Frame Generation” under a DLSS section, or a similar NVIDIA-labelled option. DLSS Super Resolution by itself is not evidence that Frame Generation is available.
  2. Confirm the GPU generation. Native support requires a GeForce RTX 40-series or newer card under NVIDIA’s published split. An RTX 3060, RTX 3070 or RTX 3080 can run Super Resolution where offered but does not meet that native Frame Generation assignment.
  3. Check the game’s API and patch level. Some integrations require DirectX 12 and a particular game update. If the option disappeared after a patch, compare the current patch notes and graphics settings reset behavior.
  4. Update the graphics driver. For the documented Unreal plugin path, NVIDIA recommends driver 531.18 or newer. A game can require a newer branch, so use the driver requirement stated by that title when it is more specific.
  5. Check NVIDIA’s current supported-titles or override list. Eligibility and override coverage can change as games are patched. Presence on an override list does not mean every graphics API or every mode in the title is supported.
  6. Verify the mode is actually enabled. Frame Generation can be disabled by a preset, an unsupported resolution mode, a non-DX12 renderer or a conflicting latency setting. Apply the game’s setting, restart if requested, and confirm the on-screen option remains enabled.

Why the option is missing

The developer never integrated Frame Generation

This is the most common explanation. A game may support DLSS Super Resolution, NVIDIA Reflex or ray tracing while shipping no Frame Generation path. A driver cannot reconstruct the engine motion vectors and presentation behavior reliably enough to turn every existing DLSS title into a native Frame Generation title.

Your GPU is outside the native hardware split

RTX 20- and RTX 30-series owners can see DLSS controls and reasonably assume all DLSS features are available. NVIDIA separates Super Resolution from Frame Generation, however, so the upscaler can appear while the Frame Generation control is absent.

The renderer or API is unsupported

A title may implement the feature only in its DirectX 12 renderer. If it starts in DirectX 11, Vulkan or a legacy mode, the control can be hidden. Select the supported renderer if the game offers one, then restart and recheck the settings.

The game or driver is too old

Native support can depend on a specific game update and driver branch. Updating the game and driver is appropriate, but an update cannot create support when the developer has not shipped the integration.

Settings or platform restrictions disable it

Some games disable Frame Generation in menus, competitive modes, virtual-reality modes or hardware configurations that cannot meet their latency and presentation requirements. Read the title’s patch notes and support documentation rather than assuming the GPU is defective.

Can the NVIDIA App force Frame Generation?

Only in limited cases. NVIDIA’s App override system applies to selected compatible titles tracked on NVIDIA’s supported-titles list. It does not make every game universally compatible. For model-upgrade and Multi Frame Generation override paths, NVIDIA states that Frame Generation must already be enabled in the game. An override can adjust a supported implementation; it cannot supply a missing engine integration.

Open the game’s profile in the NVIDIA App and inspect the available Overrides. If no Frame Generation-related option is listed, the title is not currently eligible for that override path. If an override is present but the in-game Frame Generation switch is off, enable the game setting first. Because the list and eligibility can change with patches and drivers, treat the current App entry and NVIDIA’s current supported-titles page as the authority for that title.

Native Frame Generation versus Smooth Motion

Smooth Motion is a separate driver-level frame-generation feature. NVIDIA defines it as a feature for titles that do not natively support DLSS Frame Generation. It operates transparently to the game engine, so it can be useful when a title has no native option and the current driver and platform support the feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its trade-offs are important:

  • It does not convert the game into a native DLSS Frame Generation integration.
  • It may have different compatibility, latency and image-quality behavior from a developer-integrated path.
  • NVIDIA warns that native DLSS Frame Generation and Smooth Motion are competing technologies and should not be used together.

If a game has native Frame Generation, use that path and leave Smooth Motion disabled. If it has no native option, test Smooth Motion separately and compare responsiveness and artifact behavior rather than enabling both.

Standard Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation are different

Standard Frame Generation synthesizes one intermediate frame between rendered frames. Multi Frame Generation is a newer mode for GeForce RTX 50-series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs that can generate up to three additional frames per rendered frame, according to NVIDIA’s developer information.

Characteristic Standard DLSS Frame Generation DLSS Multi Frame Generation
Generated output One intermediate frame in the conventional path Up to three additional frames per rendered frame
GPU generation Associated with RTX 40 and newer support GeForce RTX 50 series and RTX PRO Blackwell
Game requirement Native Frame Generation integration or an eligible override A compatible Frame Generation implementation and Multi Frame support or eligible override
What it does not do Does not add support to an unintegrated game Does not make every title compatible; an override still requires the game’s Frame Generation path

NVIDIA also advertises up to 8× performance for DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation. That is a vendor claim whose result depends on the game, resolution, settings, base rendering performance and test conditions; it is not a guaranteed multiplier for every title.

Performance, latency and image-quality considerations

Frame Generation increases displayed-frame rate by synthesizing frames; it does not remove the work needed to render the underlying frames. If the game’s base render rate is unstable, generated frames cannot fix CPU bottlenecks, simulation stalls or severe input delay. NVIDIA does not publish one universal minimum base-FPS threshold that guarantees good results in every game, so evaluate the title’s responsiveness at its native rendered rate before enabling the feature.

  • HDMI and Display Port outputs: Enable flexible connectivity

DLSS 3 integrations incorporate NVIDIA Reflex, which synchronizes CPU and GPU work to improve responsiveness and system latency. Reflex support is game-specific, and the presence of a Frame Generation toggle does not guarantee that every Reflex option is exposed. Enable Reflex when the game offers it, then judge latency with the game’s own frame-time and input behavior.

Artifacts also vary by implementation. Fast-moving objects, particle effects, user-interface elements and rapidly changing camera views can reveal interpolation errors. A game update may improve those cases, while another title may handle them differently. Use a repeatable scene, compare native rendering with Frame Generation, and prioritize stable frame times and control response over the headline displayed-FPS number.

A practical troubleshooting path

  1. Confirm the symptom. Determine whether the setting is missing, greyed out, or enabled but producing no measurable change. Those indicate different causes.
  2. Check hardware. Verify the exact GPU model. Native DLSS Frame Generation requires the RTX 40-series class or newer under NVIDIA’s published table; RTX 20/30 support for Super Resolution does not satisfy this requirement.
  3. Use the supported renderer. Select DirectX 12 when the title documents it, disable legacy API launch options, and restart the game.
  4. Update in the right order. Install the game’s current update, then a current NVIDIA driver. If the title specifies a minimum driver, meet that version or newer.
  5. Reset conflicting settings. Re-enable Frame Generation after changing presets, resolution modes or upscaling options. Some games hide dependent controls until DLSS Super Resolution is selected.
  6. Inspect the NVIDIA App profile. Use an override only when the title appears as eligible, and keep native Frame Generation enabled in-game for model-upgrade or Multi Frame paths.
  7. Test Smooth Motion separately. If no native integration exists and your driver/platform supports Smooth Motion, disable native Frame Generation first. Never stack the two technologies.
  8. Check for a title-specific limitation. Competitive, VR, modded or nonstandard launch modes can disable the feature. Use the game developer’s current notes for that exception.

What developers must implement

For a native integration, the engine must expose sequential frames, accurate motion vectors and a presentation path where a synthesized frame can be inserted. NVIDIA’s DLSS 3 design also uses optical-flow analysis from the RTX 40-series Optical Flow Accelerator and commonly pairs the integration with Reflex for scheduling and latency control. That chain of data explains why a generic driver switch cannot reliably retrofit the feature into every executable.

In Unreal Engine, NVIDIA says the DLSS Frame Generation plugin is supported “out of the box” in Unreal Engine 5.2. Unreal Engine 5.1 and earlier require additional engine-source changes. Those are developer requirements; players cannot satisfy them by changing a Windows setting. A game built with a supported engine version can still omit the feature if its developer does not enable and ship it.

Bottom line for common scenarios

  • RTX 40-series owner, game has a Frame Generation setting: Update the game and driver, use the supported renderer, enable Reflex if offered, and test native Frame Generation.
  • RTX 3060/3070/3080 owner: Use DLSS Super Resolution where available. Native DLSS Frame Generation is not assigned to these RTX 20/30 GPUs by NVIDIA.
  • RTX 50-series owner: Standard Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation remain game-dependent. Multi Frame Generation can produce up to three additional frames, but only in compatible implementations.
  • Game has DLSS but no Frame Generation: The developer may not have integrated it. Check current supported-title and App override eligibility; do not assume the driver can add it.
  • No native support but Smooth Motion is available: Test Smooth Motion alone, monitor latency and artifacts, and leave native Frame Generation disabled.

Support is therefore a three-part question: does the game ship the integration, does the GPU and software stack meet its requirements, and is the selected mode eligible in the current version? Checking all three prevents the common mistake of treating “has DLSS” as “has every DLSS feature.”
