Not always. Deleting an archived livestream removes the video from your channel, but it is not a universal way to clear copyright consequences. The answer depends on whether YouTube shows a Content ID claim or a copyright removal request—and, for a scheduled removal request, whether its seven-day response window is still open.
First identify what kind of copyright notice you received
In YouTube Studio, open the livestream’s notice under Restrictions or Claims and inspect its details. YouTube treats a Content ID claim and a copyright removal request (also called a takedown) as different processes. A copyright strike is a consequence associated with a removal request, not simply another name for a Content ID claim.

If it is a Content ID claim
A livestream may be scanned for third-party matches while it is live. If you choose to archive it, YouTube can also make a Content ID claim after the stream ends. A claim may affect monetization, tracking, or availability without being a strike.
Want to keep the archive?
YouTube documents three editing routes in Studio: trim out the claimed segment, replace the claimed song, or erase or mute the claimed audio. The claim clears through editing only if all claimed content is successfully removed. Review the result after processing rather than assuming that an edit cleared the claim.

If you believe the claim is invalid, you can dispute it when you have a valid reason and the necessary rights. YouTube does not mediate copyright disputes, so do not dispute merely because you disagree with the claim or want it removed.
Want to remove the archive?
Deleting the VOD removes that video from your channel, but do not treat deletion as a universal resolution of the claim or as a decision about whether the underlying use was lawful. YouTube’s guidance about uploader claims closing when a video is deleted is specifically for channels linked to a Content Manager.

If it is a scheduled copyright removal request
Check the notice date and whether YouTube identifies the request as scheduled. If the seven-day window is still open, deleting the content during that period avoids the strike. Once that period has passed, deleting the video does not resolve a strike already applied. If you are unsure which deadline applies, rely on the timing and status shown in the notice, not on the age of the livestream alone.
How to delete or preserve a livestream archive
Delete it from YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live tab.
- Find the archived livestream and open its options or details.
- Choose the delete option and confirm. This removes the VOD; it does not substitute for checking whether the notice is a Content ID claim or a takedown.
Keep it but limit visibility
YouTube also lets you change an archived stream’s privacy instead of deleting it. That changes who can view the archive, but should not be mistaken for clearing a copyright claim. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive as a backup.

What deletion does—and does not—settle
- It does: remove the archived VOD from your channel when deletion completes.
- It does not automatically establish: that a Content ID claim record has closed in every account context, that you had permission to use the material, or that a copyright dispute has been resolved.
- For a scheduled takedown: the seven-day window is decisive for avoiding the strike by deletion; later deletion does not undo an existing strike.
YouTube’s guidance explains platform procedures. It does not determine whether a particular use is legally permitted or whether a claimant’s assertion is correct.
