Yes, you can try playing Deadlock with a controller using Steam Input, but the available sources do not confirm full native controller support for the game. Steam Input lets you apply or customize mappings; it does not guarantee that every controller or connection mode will work reliably.

What controller support means in Deadlock

Deadlock is the Valve game listed on Steam as app 1422450. Its official Steam support page provides a help route but does not identify a controller-support tier or explain how to configure a controller.

Valve’s Big Picture controller guidance says that Steam games can be played in Big Picture mode, but not all Steam games support controller use. It distinguishes full support from partial support, where some setup or interface actions may still require a mouse and keyboard. That is general Steam guidance, not a Deadlock-specific support label.

A third-party Deadlock layout index lists community-submitted configurations for controllers including Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch Pro, and identifies Steam Input as required. Those layouts are useful starting points, but their availability is not an official Valve guarantee.

How to set up a controller for Deadlock

  1. Connect a controller that Steam recognizes. Steam’s Big Picture guidance lists official Microsoft Xbox controllers, Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers as supported types within Big Picture. It says third-party controllers often work but are not officially supported; neither statement guarantees compatibility with Deadlock.
  2. In the Steam client, open Deadlock’s per-game controller configuration. Depending on the client version, the option may appear from the game’s Library page, its manage settings, or the controller settings area; labels and paths can change.
  3. Choose an available layout. Start with one intended for your controller type, and consider a Deadlock community layout if the index lists one. Check the layout’s bindings before relying on it.
  4. Launch Deadlock and test the actions you need. If the controls are awkward or missing, return to the configurator and adjust the bindings or input behavior.
  5. If Steam offers no controller configuration for Deadlock or inputs do not register, verify that Steam detects the controller first. If the device offers multiple input or connection modes, try another mode as a diagnostic step; it is not a guaranteed fix.

Steam’s Steam Input documentation explains that gamepad input sent through Steam can appear to a game as regular Xbox controller input. That helps explain how remapping can make a controller usable without straightforward native recognition, but it does not establish how Deadlock handles input internally.

What to check if the controller does not work

  • Steam does not detect it: Confirm the connection and check whether Steam recognizes the controller before troubleshooting Deadlock’s bindings.
  • Steam detects it, but Deadlock receives no input: Reopen the per-game configuration, select a layout, and test again. A Steam-recognized controller is not by itself proof that a game supports controller input.
  • A particular layout or mode fails: Try a different available layout or, if the controller supports it, another input or connection mode. Community reports describe configuration-specific problems, not a universal Deadlock bug or fix.
  • Some actions still need a mouse or keyboard: Steam’s general guidance allows for partial support, and a community layout may map controller inputs to mouse or keyboard actions. Keep a mouse and keyboard available for configuration or interface tasks if needed.

In a forum thread opened May 13, 2026, one user reported that an 8BitDo Ultimate 2 in DInput mode was not detected by Steam Input for Deadlock. The thread also included a report about startup behavior and an April 17, 2026 Steam beta-client fix. These individual reports do not show that the issue is widespread or that the beta-client change will resolve other setups. See the Deadlock Steam discussions for the reports.

Which controllers and layouts are listed?

The Steam Input DB index includes layouts for Xbox One, DualSense, DualShock 4, Switch Pro, and other controller types. The list shows that community mappings exist; it does not establish that every listed layout is maintained by Valve, works equally well, or supports every Deadlock action.

When choosing a layout, look for one that matches your controller and inspect how it handles game actions. Some configurations may use gamepad inputs, while others may map controls to mouse and keyboard actions. There is no reliable Deadlock-specific comparison here that establishes one controller or layout as the best choice.
