Yes. Claude Code usage can include tool definitions, tool calls and results, command output, errors, and project-file contents when they are sent to the model. A file’s mere presence in your repository does not establish that Claude processed it. How to interpret the resulting usage also depends on whether you use Claude through the API or a subscription plan.
What adds tokens when Claude Code uses tools?
Tool use is not a fixed token charge per call. A request can include the tool definitions Claude needs, the model’s tool-use content, and the result returned to the model. The size and content of those inputs and results affect token use. Command output, errors, and large file contents can add to it as well. Anthropic explains tool-use tokenization in its Claude pricing documentation and lists tool output and large files among factors affecting Claude Code costs in its cost guide.
For example, a tool that returns a short status message may contribute less context than one that returns a long log or a large file. The relevant distinction is what the model receives, not simply how many times a tool was invoked.
Do project files count if they are in the repository?
Not automatically, based on repository presence alone. Claude Code loads applicable project instruction files into context. Other source files can enter the model’s context when Claude reads them or a tool returns their contents. Anthropic’s project memory documentation describes how project instructions are handled; its cost guide notes that costs vary with codebase size, but does not say every repository file is sent on every turn.

In practice, a file matters to token use when its content is included in a request or otherwise processed as context. A large file read during a task can increase usage; an unrelated file that Claude never loads or reads is not established as contributing just because it exists in the project.
How to check Claude Code usage and billing
- Run
/usagein Claude Code. The display differs by sign-in route. - If you use API access, inspect the Session block. It shows token counts by model and a local total-cost estimate. The estimate uses list pricing unless an organization administrator configured model pricing. In current versions, session totals reset when you run
/clear. - For authoritative API billing, check the Claude Console Usage page. Anthropic describes the CLI’s cost as an estimate; use the Console record to verify API charges.
- If you use Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise, read the plan-usage information separately.
/usageshows plan-limit information and may break down recent use attributed to skills, subagents, plugins, and MCP servers. These figures are approximate and based on local session history on that machine; they do not include activity from other devices or Claude.ai. Some rows and features vary by Claude Code version.
Anthropic’s CLI reference documents the command. An API session-cost estimate and a subscription plan-usage display answer different questions: the former estimates API cost for a local session, while the latter reports plan usage rather than an API bill.

Why usage can vary between sessions
Anthropic summarizes the relationship plainly: “Token costs scale with context size: the more context Claude processes, the more tokens you use.” The cost guide identifies model choice, codebase size, and usage patterns—including multiple instances or automation—as factors. Prompt caching can reduce costs for repeated content, and auto-compaction summarizes conversation history as it approaches context limits.
Agent teams can use more tokens because each teammate has its own context window. Usage therefore depends not only on the task, but also on how much context is supplied, how much tool output returns, and how many agents or automated instances are running.

How to compare usage figures fairly
Before comparing two sessions or accounts, align the factors that change what is being measured:
- Access type: API billing is not the same as subscription-plan usage.
- Reporting scope: Compare the same session or reporting window; a local subscription breakdown is not necessarily an account-wide total.
- Model and context: Model choice and the amount of context processed affect usage.
- Tool activity: Consider the size of tool results, command output, errors, and files read—not just the number of calls.
- Other activity: Account for caching, automation, multiple instances, subagents, and use from other devices where relevant.
Anthropic also gives an enterprise deployment estimate of around $13 per developer per active day and $150–250 per developer per month, and says costs remain below $30 per active day for 90% of users. Those are Anthropic’s enterprise figures, not a forecast or spending guarantee for an individual developer.
