Yes—ChatGPT can use a selfie or another reference photo to generate a visual preview of clothing on you. The photo is used for the preview and, according to OpenAI’s Shopping help, saved for future try-ons until you replace or remove it. Trying an item on is not buying it: ChatGPT may link you to a merchant, while Instant Checkout is available only for eligible products and merchants. The image is not a reliable fit or size check.
What happens to your photo during a try-on?
You can begin with clothing or an accessory shown in ChatGPT Shopping, or upload a picture of a garment and ask ChatGPT to show how it might look on you. For a listed item, choose Try on and take or upload a selfie. ChatGPT then generates an image preview. OpenAI describes this as a generated visualization, not a measurement or fitting-room test.
OpenAI says ChatGPT Shopping saves a reference photo for future try-ons. To manage it, go to Settings → Personalization → Reference photos, where you can replace or delete the selected photo. OpenAI’s feature help does not specify a separate retention period for reference photos. Its broader account privacy controls cover access, export, and deletion of account data and the choice of whether chats are used to improve models, but those general controls do not establish a precise try-on-photo processing or retention schedule. See OpenAI’s Shopping with ChatGPT Search help and ChatGPT privacy settings.
Does the preview tell you whether clothes will fit?
No. OpenAI warns that try-on images may not show the product or your appearance exactly, and do not guarantee fit or size. An image can help you imagine an outfit, but it does not establish how a garment’s cut, fabric, or measurements will work on your body.

Before ordering, compare the retailer’s size chart and garment measurements with your needs. Check product details and photos, seller information, current price and availability, and the return policy. OpenAI also cautions that shopping information, prices, stock, and discounts may be incorrect or change, so confirm the actual listing with the merchant.
Can you buy the clothes inside ChatGPT?
Finding or previewing an item and completing a purchase are separate steps. ChatGPT may provide a link to the retailer. Some eligible products and merchants may offer Instant Checkout, but that option is not universal. In OpenAI’s description of Instant Checkout, the merchant remains responsible for the order, payment processing, fulfillment, returns, and customer support. Check the checkout screen and merchant’s terms to see which route applies to a particular item. See OpenAI’s Instant Checkout announcement.

How product suggestions and shopping research fit in
OpenAI says shopping results are selected independently and are not ads or influenced by OpenAI partnerships; it describes ads as separate from product results. That is OpenAI’s description of its system, not a guarantee that a result is the best choice for every shopper. Use the retailer’s listing to verify the item, seller, price, availability, measurements, and returns.

Shopping research can help compare attributes such as price, features, and reviews, but those details can change and should be checked with the retailer. OpenAI says shopping research chats are not shared with retailers and describes its results as organic and based on public retail sites. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the try-on technology is aiming to do
OpenAI’s developer guidance describes virtual try-on as an image-editing task that combines a person’s photo with a garment reference. Its evaluation guidance names goals such as retaining the wearer’s identity, body shape, and pose; preserving garment details like color and pattern; and producing plausible lighting, overlap, and drape. These are evaluation criteria, not proof that every generated preview achieves them. The guidance is available in OpenAI’s image-generation and editing evaluation cookbook.
