Yes—but “Invision Power Board” is now generally called Invision Community. The right administrator depends on whether your forum runs on Invision’s managed Cloud service or on the self-hosted Classic edition. Cloud administrators mainly manage members, permissions, content, moderation, themes and integrations in the Admin Control Panel (ACP). Classic administrators must also maintain the server, PHP, database, backups, upgrades and security.

What you may actually be running

“Invision Power Board,” “IP.Board,” “IPS” and “Invision Community” describe different generations of the same vendor’s community software. An inherited site might be a legacy IP.Board 3 installation, Invision Community 4 or 5, current Cloud, or current Classic/self-hosted.

Version matters because menus, upgrade routes, supported PHP versions, add-ons and support eligibility vary. In the ACP, record the exact product version, licensed URL, hosting model, active applications, plugins, themes and custom code. Also establish whether you have hosting-panel, SFTP/FTP, SSH, database, DNS and registrar access. Do not assume an old IP.Board installation can upgrade directly to the current release.

What an Invision administrator does

Community and ACP administration

  • Create forums, categories and private or staff-only areas.
  • Design member groups and least-privilege permissions.
  • Approve, suspend, ban, merge and delete accounts.
  • Configure registration, validation, email, spam controls, warnings and moderation queues.
  • Manage staff roles, rules, announcements, themes, navigation and homepage content.
  • Install and configure supported applications, plugins, languages and themes through the ACP.
  • Manage search, notifications, subscriptions, clubs, blogs, galleries, downloads, APIs, SSO, analytics and payments where enabled.
  • Review reports, logs, system notices and background tasks.

Invision describes ACP installation of themes, applications, hooks and languages on its product page.

Technical administration for Classic

  • Maintain the web server, database, PHP environment, storage and file permissions.
  • Configure HTTPS, DNS, SMTP, cron jobs, caching, monitoring and server limits.
  • Apply core and extension updates, test them and recover from failed upgrades.
  • Maintain tested database, uploaded-file, configuration and custom-code backups.
  • Investigate timeouts, permission errors, failed email, database errors, resource exhaustion and security incidents.

Classic is self-managed. Invision’s support standards say it does not administer your server or log into your hosting panel, FTP/SFTP, SSH or database. Official help is mainly for clearly reproducible product issues; add-on problems generally belong with the add-on developer.

Cloud or Classic?

Area Cloud Classic/self-hosted
Installation and server maintenance Invision-managed Owner or contractor
ACP administration Owner-managed Owner-managed
Infrastructure control Limited Extensive
Support model Official vendor support Self-managed, with limited official support
Best fit Organizations operating a community rather than a server Owners with competent Linux/PHP/database infrastructure skills

Cloud is usually the safer choice for a nontechnical organization. Classic makes sense when server-level control is essential and someone can maintain it. Cloud does not remove responsibility for accounts, permissions, content, extensions or operational security.

Identify the installation before requesting help

  1. Determine whether Invision hosts the site or whether it runs on your own provider, VPS or server.
  2. Record the ACP product/version, domain, hosting provider, PHP and database versions if known, member and post counts, storage sizes, active extensions, custom themes and recent errors.
  3. Find the last successful backup and identify who controls the license, hosting, DNS, mail and registrar accounts.
  4. Separate an ACP problem from an infrastructure problem: forum permissions are an ACP task; PHP failures, DNS, SMTP, database corruption and server limits are technical administration.

Safe handoff and upgrade checklist

Back up before changing anything

For Classic, a meaningful backup includes a database dump, uploaded files, configuration, custom themes/templates, third-party applications and required server configuration. A backup is not proven until it has been restored or tested in a safe environment. Invision recommends complete backups before major operations and restoring from backup if an operation makes the community inaccessible.

Inventory modifications

  • List every plugin, application, theme override and integration.
  • Identify altered core files and custom PHP.
  • Disable or document third-party extensions before an upgrade.
  • Reproduce problems on an unmodified or staging copy where possible.

Use staging

Test core, PHP and database upgrades, theme changes, permission redesigns, plugin installs, domain changes and migrations on a test copy first. The official Classic installation guide describes the self-hosted installation sequence and notes that Cloud customers do not install the software themselves. Verify current license terms before relying on any specific live/test-installation allowance.

How to choose an administrator

For Cloud, seek ACP, permissions, moderation, theme, application, migration, SSO, API and email experience. For Classic, require both Invision expertise and PHP/MySQL/Linux hosting skills.

Questions to ask

  • Which Invision versions and both Cloud and Classic environments have you administered?
  • Have you completed upgrades, migrations and backup restores?
  • Will you stage changes, document them and provide rollback steps?
  • What access is needed: ACP, hosting panel, SFTP, SSH, database, DNS or registrar?
  • Will you use a separate administrator account rather than shared owner credentials?
  • Who owns credentials, backups, custom code and documentation after the work?
  • What is explicitly excluded from the quote?

Be cautious with anyone who cannot identify your exact version, requests the sole owner password, edits core files immediately, has no rollback plan, or promises an upgrade without inspecting the database, files, license and customizations.

Common problems and recovery

Lost administrator access

  1. Do not overwrite the database.
  2. Check for another trusted administrator and determine whether the issue is password, two-factor authentication, email delivery or account lockout.
  3. Contact the vendor or hosting provider through the account owner.
  4. For Classic, preserve files and database before any account repair; avoid unverified reset scripts.

Failed upgrade

Unsupported PHP/database versions, incomplete uploads, incompatible plugins or themes, insufficient memory/storage, permissions, database errors, interrupted tasks and custom code are common causes. Capture the exact error, restore the complete pre-upgrade backup if the site is inaccessible, then reproduce the upgrade on staging. Do not repeatedly rerun production migrations without understanding the failure.

Email failures

Check SMTP credentials, sender-domain authentication, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, provider rejection logs, rate limits and whether password-reset and validation messages fail for everyone or only members.

Spam, abuse and permissions

Separate registration spam, content spam, private-message abuse, malicious uploads, account takeover and traffic exhaustion. Review overlapping groups, forum-specific permissions and inherited private-area access. Use separate daily and administrator accounts and keep a permissions matrix. Cloud plans advertise AI-based registration and comment spam protection; confirm the controls available on your current plan.

DDoS and resource exhaustion

Invision says it may require frequently targeted communities to move to self-hosting. On Classic, investigate CDN or reverse-proxy settings, web-server limits, database load, slow queries, search indexing, attachment processing, bots and host restrictions.

Stay with Invision or migrate?

Stay when your existing applications, content model, URLs, community history and workflows matter and the installation can be safely maintained. Consider migration when the software is undocumented, repeatedly fails upgrades, lacks a tested backup, or no qualified maintainer is available. Migration difficulty depends on the source platform, database condition, password handling, attachments, URLs, custom fields, plugins and theme work.

Commercial alternatives

  • XenForo: a close commercial forum competitor with managed hosting and self-hosting. Its official page lists Cloud Starter at $60/month or $54/month annually, Standard at $100/month or $90/month annually, and Business at $250/month or $225/month annually, as displayed on August 18, 2026. See XenForo pricing.
  • Discourse: a conversation-focused platform with hosted operations, chat, API/webhooks and structured workflows. Its pricing page displayed Pro at $100/month, Business at $500/month and Enterprise at custom pricing on August 18, 2026. See Discourse pricing.

Neither alternative automatically reproduces heavily customized Invision applications, permissions or themes.
