Sometimes, but only by a small, conditional amount. An 8,000Hz mouse can make cursor movement smoother and reduce the mouse-report portion of input latency from 1 millisecond at 1,000Hz to 0.125 milliseconds. That is a best-case saving of 0.875 milliseconds before CPU processing, game-engine input, rendering, frame queuing and monitor presentation are added. On a high-refresh display with stable frame times, competitive players may notice the smoother response. For most systems, 1,000–4,000Hz is the more practical range, and a better monitor, steadier FPS or a mouse with a comfortable shape usually matters more than moving from 1K to 8K.
What an 8K polling rate actually changes
Polling rate is the frequency at which a mouse reports its position, movement and button state to the computer. A 1,000Hz setting sends up to 1,000 reports per second; an 8,000Hz setting can send up to 8,000. It is separate from DPI, which controls how far the pointer moves for a given physical movement.
The report interval is the useful number for latency:

| 4,000Hz (4K) | 0.25 ms | 0.75 ms |
| 8,000Hz (8K) | 0.125 ms | 0.875 ms |
Razer’s Viper 8KHz guide describes “True 8000Hz (0.125ms) polling rate.” The 0.875ms figure is a theoretical maximum for the reporting stage, not a promise that the entire game responds 0.875ms faster. The mouse may report between game updates, the CPU still has to process input, and the GPU and display determine when a new frame becomes visible.

Why the benefit is usually subtle
Polling is one link in total system latency
NVIDIA’s latency model follows an action through input capture, CPU and game processing, GPU rendering, frame queuing and display presentation. Lowering one link cannot remove delay in the others. If a game is running at 100 FPS, a frame takes about 10ms; a 0.875ms improvement in mouse reporting is smaller than that frame interval. A long render queue or an inconsistent frame time can hide the improvement entirely.
What independent measurements show
RTINGS measured the Razer Viper 8KHz and found smoother, more consistent cursor movement and marginally lower click latency than a 1KHz mouse. Those are real, measurable responsiveness changes, but the measurements do not establish a universal increase in aim scores, win rate or average FPS. Razer’s January 28, 2021 announcement argued that high polling can reduce micro-stutters on fast PCs and high-refresh monitors; that claim is most applicable when the rest of the system can keep up.
Refresh rate determines how often the result can be displayed
A 240Hz monitor refreshes every 4.17ms, while an 8K report arrives every 0.125ms. Several mouse reports can therefore arrive during one refresh cycle, giving the game more recent input to use for the next frame. On a 60Hz display, each refresh takes 16.67ms, so many additional reports arrive before the screen can show another image. The extra data is much less likely to produce a visible difference.

Does 8K polling lower FPS?
It can, although the effect depends on the game, driver, CPU and USB setup. Logitech’s 2026 polling-rate explanation warns that “Extra USB traffic and increased CPU usage at high report rates may cause minor FPS drops in some games.” The more useful metric is frame-time consistency, not just the average FPS number. A setting that reports a higher average but introduces spikes during mouse movement is worse for aiming than a lower, stable setting.
- CPU overhead: processing up to eight times as many reports can consume additional CPU time, especially on a busy or older processor.
- USB traffic: high-frequency reports increase activity on the USB bus and can interact poorly with some hubs, firmware or background utilities.
- Engine compatibility: some games handle 4K or 8K input cleanly; others show stutter, inconsistent frame pacing or no measurable change.
- Wireless battery: wireless 8K modes generally use more power. Wired operation avoids that battery cost but adds a cable and may change how the mouse feels on the desk.
A small average-FPS change is not automatically a problem. Compare the worst frame times and what happens while making rapid, continuous mouse movements in the actual game you play.
What refresh rate and latency research says
NVIDIA’s 2019 “Esports Arms Race” study compared 60, 120 and 240Hz displays and reported that performance improved monotonically with refresh rate in its target tasks. The authors concluded that 240Hz provided a competitive advantage under those test conditions. A companion NVIDIA study that isolated latency found that reducing latency clearly improved task completion, while refresh-rate effects were relatively minor once inherent latency differences were removed.

These experiments did not control a commercial game with identical hardware at 1K and 8K mouse polling. They support a broader priority order: first establish a high-refresh display, low and stable end-to-end latency and sustained frame rates; then consider whether the small report-interval reduction is worth the cost and overhead.

Competitive players on 240Hz or faster displays
Players of fast first-person shooters can be the best candidates when they already maintain stable, high FPS and have a CPU with spare capacity. The smoother stream of position updates may make small corrections feel more continuous, particularly at low sensitivity where the hand produces many small movements.
Players on 60Hz or 120Hz displays
At 60Hz, the display is the dominant timing limit for most users, so 8K is difficult to justify for performance alone. At 120Hz, the benefit is more plausible than at 60Hz but remains dependent on frame-time stability and game support. Upgrading the monitor or improving sustained FPS will normally produce a larger, easier-to-see change.

Players with CPU-limited or inconsistent systems
If the game already has CPU spikes, background tasks or uneven frame pacing, 8K can make the problem more visible. Use 1K or 2K/4K until the system is stable rather than adding more input work to a constrained processor.
How to test 1K, 4K and 8K on your own system
A controlled in-game comparison is more useful than assuming the highest number is best. Test every setting with the same sensitivity, resolution, frame cap and scene.

- Update the mouse firmware and software. Install the current firmware and receiver software supplied for your model. Restart the game after changing the polling setting.
- Record a baseline at 1K. Play the game you care about for several minutes, including a repeatable training scene or match. Note average FPS, low-percentile FPS and whether rapid movement feels smooth.
- Repeat at 2K or 4K. Keep every other setting unchanged. Watch for frame-time spikes while sweeping the mouse quickly, not only while standing still.
- Test 8K last. Use the same scene and duration. If the game stutters, loses FPS or feels inconsistent, return to the highest lower setting that remains stable.
- Check more than a synthetic polling tester. A polling-rate utility can confirm that the mouse is sending reports, but it cannot predict the game engine’s processing, render queue or display behavior.
- Close unnecessary utilities while diagnosing. Monitoring tools, overlays and other software that hooks mouse input can add variables. Re-enable them one at a time after finding a stable setting.
Use a frame-time graph or an in-game performance overlay where available. If you cannot perceive or measure a difference and 8K adds overhead, there is no performance reason to keep it enabled.

Troubleshooting high-polling problems
Stutter appears only when moving the mouse
- Drop from 8K to 4K, then to 2K or 1K, and compare frame-time consistency.
- Connect the receiver or cable directly to the motherboard rather than through an overloaded hub.
- Update motherboard USB, mouse and graphics drivers, then retest.
- Disable duplicate polling, overlay or monitoring utilities while testing.
The game ignores the selected rate
Some software applies the setting only after restarting the game or its receiver service. Confirm the rate in the mouse utility, restart the title, and test in the title itself. Do not assume that a desktop cursor test represents in-game input.
Wireless battery drains too quickly
Use 4K or 2K for a compromise, lower the report rate when playing noncompetitive games, or connect the mouse by cable for sessions where battery life matters more than wireless convenience.
Is 8K worth paying for?
Polling rate should be one row in a mouse comparison, not the ranking criterion. Evaluate the complete device:
| Factor | Why it matters | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Shape and weight | A comfortable, controllable mouse affects aim more than a sub-millisecond report difference. | Does it fit your grip and hand size? |
| Sensor consistency | Reliable tracking prevents skips and unwanted smoothing. | Does it track predictably at your sensitivity? |
| Click latency and switch behavior | Button response is part of the input path. | Are clicks consistent and durable? |
| Wireless stability | Dropouts or interference erase any polling advantage. | Does the receiver remain reliable at your desk? |
| Battery life | Higher wireless rates can require more charging. | How long does the chosen mode last? |
| Software and game support | High rates require compatible firmware and an engine that handles them well. | Can you select 1K, 2K/4K and 8K independently? |
| Price | Money may produce a larger improvement elsewhere. | Would a monitor, GPU, CPU or better-fitting mouse help more? |
The Razer Viper 8KHz is a direct example of a mouse built around true 8,000Hz operation and a documented 0.125ms interval. Logitech also offers mice that can be upgraded to 8KHz with a compatible PRO Wireless Receiver, demonstrating that 8K can be delivered through a receiver accessory rather than requiring an entirely different sensor platform. Compatibility, cost and the specific model determine whether that upgrade is useful.
Recommended settings by situation
| Situation | Starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 60Hz display or office and casual gaming | 1KHz | Broad compatibility and minimal USB/CPU overhead; extra reports are unlikely to be visible. |
| 120–165Hz display | 1K–4KHz | Use 2K or 4K if frame times remain stable and you prefer the feel; 1K remains sufficient for many players. |
| 240Hz display with stable high FPS | 2K–4KHz first, then test 8K | The system can make better use of frequent updates, but 8K still needs engine and CPU headroom. |
| 360Hz or faster competitive setup | 4K or 8K after testing | The low report interval is most defensible when the display and game are already optimized for low latency. |
| CPU-limited game or inconsistent frame pacing | 1K–2KHz | Reduce input overhead and prioritize stable frame times. |
| Wireless setup where battery life is a priority | 1K–4KHz | Higher rates can shorten runtime; choose 8K only if the responsiveness gain justifies more charging. |
Bottom line: does 8K improve gaming performance?
Yes, in the narrow sense that it can smooth cursor movement and shave up to 0.875ms from the mouse-report interval compared with 1K. No, it is not a universal FPS or win-rate upgrade. Logitech documents possible minor FPS drops from USB and CPU overhead, and the independent measurements available for an 8K mouse show marginally lower click latency and smoother motion rather than a dramatic transformation.
For Valorant, Counter-Strike 2 and similar games, start with 1K or 2K/4K and verify stable frame times. Choose 8K when you use a high-refresh monitor, sustain high FPS, have CPU headroom, and can confirm that the game remains smooth during rapid movement. For everyone else, spend first on a suitable mouse shape, a high-refresh display and a stable low-latency system.
