It depends on where you watch. AdGuard documents blocking YouTube ads in mobile browsers on Android and iOS, but says it cannot completely remove ads in the official YouTube app. Filtering in other apps is also limited: some apps block the HTTPS filtering AdGuard needs, while iOS offers few ways to block ads outside Safari. On TVs, DNS filtering can block some external ad and tracking domains, but it cannot reliably remove YouTube ads delivered within videos.

Where AdGuard can block ads

The key distinction is whether playback happens in a browser, a native app, AdGuard’s own player, or a TV app. The filtering method matters too: browser and HTTPS filtering can inspect more than DNS, which works at the domain level.

Where you watch What AdGuard documents Main limitation
YouTube in an Android mobile browser AdGuard for Android blocks YouTube ads in mobile browsers when browser protection is enabled. AdGuard for Android overview Filtering depends on protection being active and on current platform behavior and filtering rules.
YouTube in Safari on iPhone or iPad AdGuard for iOS documents YouTube ad blocking in mobile browsers. AdGuard for iOS overview Safari is the main browser route on iOS; blocking ads in native apps is much more constrained.
Official YouTube app AdGuard’s documented workaround is to share a video to AdGuard and play it in AdGuard’s built-in player. AdGuard’s YouTube guidance AdGuard says it cannot completely remove ads from the official YouTube app. The workaround changes the player; it does not make the YouTube app ad-free.
Other Android apps AdGuard for Android provides system-level app filtering. AdGuard for Android overview Some apps block HTTPS filtering, so AdGuard may not work correctly inside them. Results for a particular streaming app are not established here. AdGuard Support: ads in apps
Native apps on iPhone or iPad AdGuard recommends DNS protection with an ad-blocking DNS server as an option outside Safari. AdGuard Support: ads in iOS apps DNS filtering is not a guarantee, and iOS provides few options for blocking ads in native apps. For YouTube, AdGuard documents Safari viewing or the share-to-player workaround.
TVs and streaming boxes AdGuard recommends DNS filtering or AdGuard Home to block some known external ad and tracking domains. AdGuard’s smart TV guidance DNS cannot reliably remove YouTube in-video ads because video and ad delivery can use the same domains. AdGuard’s explanation of DNS ad-blocking limits

Does AdGuard block YouTube ads in a mobile browser?

AdGuard says its Android and iOS products block YouTube ads in mobile browsers. That claim applies to browser playback with the relevant protection enabled; it is not a promise that every ad will always be blocked. Ad delivery, browser behavior, and filtering rules can change, so check that protection is enabled if ads appear.

Why the YouTube app is different

AdGuard says it cannot completely remove ads from the official YouTube app. Its workaround is to open a video in YouTube, tap Share, choose AdGuard, and watch it in AdGuard’s built-in player. The video is no longer playing in the YouTube app, so this is an alternative playback route rather than app-level ad removal.

What to expect in other streaming apps

Android

AdGuard for Android can filter app traffic, but this does not mean it removes every in-stream ad. Some apps—including YouTube—bar HTTPS filtering, which can prevent AdGuard from working correctly. AdGuard Support notes that it sometimes does not block ads inside particular apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. If an app’s ads remain, try its web version where practical; the result for any specific streaming service depends on that app’s behavior.

iPhone and iPad

Apple’s iOS environment limits ad blocking outside Safari. AdGuard recommends enabling DNS protection with an ad-blocking DNS server; if that does not resolve the issue, try the service’s Safari version. DNS may block requests to known ad domains, but it does not provide a general guarantee for ads embedded in native-app streams.

TVs and streaming devices

DNS filtering can stop requests to some known external advertising or tracking domains, but it cannot inspect individual video segments. When a service delivers ads and video from the same domains, DNS cannot reliably distinguish them. That is why DNS is a limited domain filter, not a universal blocker for ads inside TV streaming apps.

AdGuard VPN is not an ad blocker

AdGuard separately announced VPN support for accessing services including Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. The announcement described the feature as being tested at the time of publication; it does not establish current service coverage, and access through a VPN is different from removing ads. Confirm current availability before relying on that feature. AdGuard VPN streaming announcement

What to try if ads still appear

  • On Android browser: confirm AdGuard protection is enabled for the browser you use, then try YouTube in that browser rather than the native app.
  • On iPhone or iPad: try YouTube in Safari with AdGuard enabled. If you are troubleshooting another app, enable DNS protection with an ad-blocking DNS server; results can vary.
  • In the YouTube app: use Share and select AdGuard to play the video in its built-in player, if that suits your needs.
  • In another app or on a TV: treat DNS or app filtering as limited. If the app blocks HTTPS filtering or serves ads from the same domains as its video, AdGuard may not remove those ads.

App behavior and filtering rules can change. Check the current AdGuard version and protection settings for your device when troubleshooting.
