A Mac mini can sleep if its power settings allow it, and sleep may interrupt running tasks—including the app handling a livestream. On a desktop Mac, go to Apple menu > System Settings > Energy and turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. You can let the display turn off separately while keeping the Mac awake.
Stop your Mac mini from sleeping while streaming
- Open Energy settings: choose Apple menu > System Settings > Energy. The exact options can vary by Mac model and macOS version.
- Prevent automatic sleep: turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. Apple describes this as preventing the desktop Mac from automatically sleeping while its display is off. See Apple’s Energy settings guide.
- Set the display timeout separately: in Apple menu > System Settings > Lock Screen, choose when to turn the display off. This controls the display, not whether the computer sleeps. Labels and availability may differ by macOS version; see Apple’s sleep and wake settings guide.
- Confirm the stream app can resume after a restart: a power outage or macOS update can restart the Mac. Apple notes that some server apps need to be relaunched manually after a restart unless they are configured to launch automatically. Check your streaming app’s own launch-at-login or restart options.
Apple recommends preventing sleep when setting up a Mac mini as a server and warns: “If your Mac mini goes to sleep, currently running tasks and processes may be interrupted.” Read Set up your Mac mini as a server.
Choose whether to keep the display on
| Setup | What happens | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the display on | The screen remains visible while the Mac is running. | Useful for monitoring at the Mac, but keeps the display active. |
| Turn off the display and prevent automatic sleep | The screen can go dark while the computer remains awake for its running tasks. | Uses less display power, though Apple warns that delaying or preventing sleep may increase power consumption. |
Apple’s desktop Energy settings also include Wake for network access, Start up automatically after a power failure, and UPS Options. Wake for network access is for shared resources while the Mac is sleeping; it is not a substitute for preventing sleep during a live stream. The startup option can help the Mac turn back on after a power failure, but does not by itself relaunch every streaming app.
What the sleep setting does—and does not—guarantee
Preventing automatic sleep addresses one cause of interruption: the Mac entering sleep and potentially interrupting running processes. It does not guarantee that a YouTube broadcast will remain live. Power loss, internet loss, a stopped streaming app, or a YouTube-side interruption are separate issues; Apple’s Mac settings documentation does not establish YouTube-specific reconnection or stream-recovery behavior.

For power concerns, review Start up automatically after a power failure and UPS Options in Energy settings. A compatible UPS may provide backup for some local power interruptions, depending on its capacity and configuration. Apple documents UPS options but does not endorse a specific model or claim that a UPS protects your internet connection or ensures the stream resumes.
Troubleshoot if the Mac still sleeps or the stream stops
- The Mac sleeps unexpectedly: recheck the Energy sleep setting and the display timeout in Lock Screen. If the sleep behavior remains unexpected, Apple recommends checking sleep settings, background activity, connected devices, Spotlight indexing, and other possible causes. Follow Apple’s troubleshooting guide.
- The Mac restarts and the stream app is no longer running: check whether the app is configured to launch automatically after restart. Apple notes that server apps may need manual relaunch after a restart if they are not configured to start on their own.
- The stream stops while the Mac remains awake: investigate the streaming app, network connection, power, and YouTube stream status separately. Disabling sleep only addresses the computer’s sleep behavior.
- You cannot tell whether the Mac is asleep from its indicator: Apple says the Mac mini status light is lit when the computer is awake or sleeping, and unlit when it is off, so the light alone does not distinguish sleep from awake. Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded video, StreamNeo is an alternative to leaving a Mac mini running. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
