Neither period always earns more. A monetized YouTube livestream can earn ad revenue while it is live, and an eligible public replay can earn ad revenue afterward. The result depends on your channel’s audience and the ads actually served, so compare ad revenue for the same stream across clearly defined live and replay periods in YouTube Analytics—not views or RPM alone.
How a livestream can earn ads in both periods
While the stream is live
With monetization enabled, YouTube documents pre-roll and display ads, along with automatic or manually inserted mid-rolls. Automatic mid-roll frequency can be set to low, medium, or high; YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls, while scheduled or manual choices may have lower earnings potential. YouTube may limit interruptions for members, pause mid-rolls for viewers sending certain paid messages, or snooze them at highly engaging moments. These options create opportunities for ads, not a promise that an ad will serve.
YouTube puts it plainly: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. Our ad systems decide which ad slots may get an ad based on a number of factors to best balance viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values.” See YouTube’s live monetization guidance.
After the stream ends
A live stream may be archived as a channel video, and an eligible public replay can earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue. The same YouTube guidance says Analytics can show ad-revenue breakdowns for live streams and live replays. However, not every stream is necessarily captured: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Replay revenue depends on its post-stream audience and the ads actually served. Replay views do not each guarantee an ad, just as live ad slots do not.
Why views and RPM do not settle the comparison
A view is not the same as a monetized playback. YouTube lists reasons a view may have no ad, including monetization settings, ad availability, viewer geography, recent ad exposure, and Premium status. Compare the ad revenue metric directly, and inspect estimated monetized playbacks and ad impressions to understand what happened. YouTube explains these metrics in Understand ad revenue analytics.

- Estimated ad revenue: use this for the ad-only comparison. Estimated revenue can also include memberships, Premium, and paid chat features.
- RPM: revenue after YouTube’s share per 1,000 views, combining revenue sources beyond ads. It is not an ad-only measure.
- CPM: advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share. It describes advertiser spend, not what the creator takes home per view.
Live chat features such as Super Chat and Super Stickers, memberships, and Premium can matter to total earnings, but do not count them as ad revenue when answering which period earned more from ads.
How to compare live and replay earnings fairly
- Open YouTube Analytics for the stream. Find the ad-revenue breakdown for the live stream and its live replay, as available in Analytics.
- Set explicit windows. Compare the broadcast period with a defined post-stream interval—for example, the first seven days after it ends. Seven days is a practical comparison window, not a YouTube rule.
- Use ad-only revenue. Do not substitute total estimated revenue or RPM if the question is specifically about ads.
- Record the delivery context. Alongside revenue, note views, estimated monetized playbacks, ad impressions, audience geography, stream duration, and ad settings where available.
- Choose a denominator if measuring efficiency. Report ad revenue per hour or per 1,000 views, naming the denominator, alongside total ad revenue. The total answers which period made more in aggregate; the rate helps compare periods of different lengths or audience sizes.
- Repeat the comparison. Compare multiple streams from the same channel where possible. Topic, audience, stream length, season, geography, settings, and replay reach may vary, so one stream does not establish a universal result.
What YouTube’s published mid-roll statistic means
YouTube Help reports that creators who chose automatic live mid-roll ads saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour. The comparison was between channels with automatic live mid-rolls enabled and channels without them, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. It is not a live-versus-replay comparison, nor a guaranteed outcome for an individual channel. The figure is described on YouTube’s live monetization page.

Eligibility and revenue-share context
To earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from long-form or live-stream videos, a creator must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. Turning ads on does not itself ensure that ads will run: YouTube says content is subject to its standard review process and advertiser-friendly requirements. Its monetization settings guidance explains the module.
For partners who accept the Watch Page Monetization Module, YouTube documents a 55% share of net revenue from ads displayed or streamed on public videos on the content Watch Page. This share applies to qualifying Watch Page ad revenue; it does not make live and replay earnings equal. YouTube also states that the Partner Agreement does not guarantee how much, or whether, a creator will be paid. Details are in the YouTube Partner Earnings Overview.
