Choose Docling when you need document parsing to run locally or in a private, air-gapped environment and want a structured document model. Choose Unstructured when a hosted workflow that combines parsing with chunking, enrichment, embeddings, and remote data connectors fits your pipeline. Neither is a universal winner: test both against representative files and compare output quality, operating effort, throughput, and total cost for your workload.

How do Docling and Unstructured differ?

Both tools turn documents into machine-usable content, but their workflow emphasis differs. Docling is an open-source toolkit for converting varied document formats into a unified document representation and exporting structured results. Unstructured provides open-source processing components as well as hosted workflow and API options for partitioning documents and preparing their content for downstream systems.

The practical choice is often about where processing runs and what you need after parsing—not a single accuracy ranking.

Decision point Docling Unstructured
Typical fit Local or private parsing with a structured document model Hosted processing workflows that can combine partitioning with downstream preparation
Processing location Can run locally, including offline after required models are cached; private and hosted deployment options are also described The workflow API uses Unstructured-hosted compute; ingestion tooling also documents a local processing path
Beyond parsing Exports document representations such as Markdown, HTML, and lossless JSON Workflow API covers partitioning, chunking, embedding, enrichment, and routing results to storage or retrieval systems
License and terms The project repository identifies Docling as MIT-licensed Check the license for the specific open-source component and the commercial terms for any hosted service

These are workflow distinctions, not guarantees about quality, speed, or cost on a particular set of files. Both can have local and hosted elements, so confirm the exact component, deployment path, plan, and terms before deciding.

When is Docling the better fit?

You need local, private, or air-gapped processing

Docling supports local execution and can be used in private or air-gapped deployments. Its deployment documentation says offline use is possible after models are cached; downloading those models initially requires network access. Local throughput depends on the machine, and the operator is responsible for infrastructure and operations. Private or on-premises deployments likewise put infrastructure ownership on the organization. For hosted deployments, review the provider’s actual retention and processing boundaries before sending sensitive documents. Docling deployment options

You want a unified document representation and varied exports

The Docling project repository describes support for formats including PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, HTML, EPUB, images, audio, video, email, and XML schemas. It lists exports including Markdown, HTML, WebVTT, DocLang, DocTags, and lossless JSON. The project also describes PDF capabilities for layout and reading order, tables, code, formulas, and image classification. These are project-maintained capabilities; check the documentation for the version you plan to deploy.

You need to understand its document-processing foundations

The authors of the 2025 Docling technical report describe the toolkit as “an easy-to-use, self-contained, MIT-licensed, open-source toolkit for document conversion.” The report identifies DocLayNet for layout analysis and TableFormer for table recognition, and describes operation on commodity hardware with a small resource budget. That published description is not a performance guarantee for every current release or device. Docling technical report

Does Docling need OCR for every PDF?

No. Docling.org’s community format guide says, “OCR is optional and only needed for scans or PDFs without a text layer.” A text-based PDF can already contain selectable text; a scanned page is essentially an image and depends on OCR to recognize its words. OCR results therefore depend on the scan and recognition quality. The same guide says TableFormer-based reconstruction applies to structured inputs and PDFs, while scanned pages depend on OCR. Treat this as the guide’s description, and test the kinds of scans and tables you actually process. Docling format guide

When is Unstructured the better fit?

You want parsing and downstream preparation in one workflow

Unstructured’s API overview describes a workflow endpoint for partitioning, chunking, embedding, and enrichment. It supports batch processing from remote locations and sending processed results to storage, databases, and vector stores. The hosted workflow uses provider-hosted compute, so it is not the same as running every part of the pipeline on your own machine. Unstructured workflow API overview

You need to shape content into chunks

Unstructured’s chunking documentation describes partitioning as the step that identifies structural elements, followed by chunking that combines or splits elements according to a strategy and size. The legacy endpoint page lists basic, by-title, by-page, and by-similarity strategies. It recommends on-demand jobs for production-level use, multiple local files in batches, newer models, enrichments, chunking strategies, and embeddings. Because the page refers to a legacy endpoint, check the current API documentation before building against it. Unstructured chunking documentation

You need table content in HTML

Unstructured documents an element’s text_as_html metadata field as a way to extract HTML representations of tables. Support depends on document type; consult its document-type table rather than assuming the same output is available for every input. Unstructured partitioning documentation

You want to process files locally

Unstructured’s ingestion documentation distinguishes local file processing from routing partitioning through an API. In local mode, an API key and URL are not required. This local path does not mean that every hosted workflow feature runs locally; confirm the exact tooling and plan for the capabilities you need. Unstructured ingestion documentation

What does the published benchmark show—and not show?

Unstructured’s benchmark page describes an evaluation using a real-world enterprise dataset of over 1,000 pages, including scanned invoices, complex layouts, nested tables, handwritten notes, and industry-specific formats. In the comparison displayed on the page, Unstructured reports 0.880 Adjusted CCT, 0.574 Element Alignment, 0.820 table cell-level content accuracy, and 0.813 table cell-level spatial accuracy. The page also displays results for other systems, including Docling. Unstructured benchmark

These are vendor-reported results for that evaluation and those named metrics—not a universal accuracy rate or an independent verdict. They do not establish how either tool will perform on your documents, languages, formats, or required fields. The benchmark page does not state a publication date; the figures should be read as the values displayed when accessed on October 4, 2026.

How should you choose for your workload?

Run a small trial using files that represent the documents you expect to process, then compare both tools on the same inputs and requirements. Include ordinary and difficult files rather than selecting only clean examples.

  1. List your inputs and outputs. Record the file types you actually receive and the downstream structure you need, such as Markdown, JSON, HTML tables, or chunks. Verify support for each required input and output in the current documentation.
  2. Build a representative test set. Include text-based PDFs and scans, multi-column pages, simple and nested tables, relevant languages, and any other formats or layouts that matter to your workflow.
  3. Define what counts as a correct result. Check reading order, table content and structure, text recognition, required fields, and whether the output can be consumed by the next system without manual repair.
  4. Test the intended deployment path. Compare local, private, and hosted options only when they meet your security and operational requirements. Note model downloads, machine capacity, API or plan limits, and who is responsible for infrastructure.
  5. Measure end-to-end effort and cost. Record throughput, failures and recovery work, human correction time, and the cost of processing and maintaining the full pipeline. A parser’s apparent per-document performance is not the whole operating cost.
  6. Choose on observed fit. Prefer Docling when its local/private deployment and document representation best meet your needs; prefer Unstructured when its hosted workflow and downstream preparation reduce work without violating your deployment requirements.

What is not established by the available comparison?

  • There is no workload-independent winner for parsing accuracy.
  • The benchmark results do not determine performance on an individual organization’s corpus.
  • No current end-to-end cost can be stated without a specified deployment, workload, and plan. Local infrastructure has operating costs too, even when there is no hosted API charge.
  • Exact current format parity and license boundaries across all Unstructured components and commercial tiers are not established here; consult the current project documentation and applicable service terms.
