A failing Docker Swarm service does not, by itself, explain why other healthy containers can no longer communicate over an overlay network. Service and task health are control-plane signals; network reachability is a separate data-plane question. Start by checking task placement and network membership, then compare same-node and cross-node communication before changing the service or firewall.

What the service failure does—and does not—tell you

A Swarm service defines a desired state, including its networks, while tasks are the work units placed on nodes to implement that state. The manager tries to reconcile actual tasks with the desired service state, so a service can have restarting, rejected, or pending tasks while other tasks continue running. Conversely, a container reported as healthy has not necessarily demonstrated that it can reach peers across the overlay.

Those facts make the reported timing important, but they do not establish that a failing service automatically disconnected unrelated healthy containers. Treat the task failure and the connectivity loss as potentially related symptoms until task history, network membership, and node-to-node behavior show how they connect.

How to check the service’s tasks and network attachment

  1. From a Swarm manager, run docker service ls to identify the service and its high-level state. Then run docker service ps <service-name> to review task states, node placement, errors, and the service’s task/network details. Note whether tasks are restarting, rejected, or pending, and when those changes began.

  2. Inspect the service definition and its network list. Confirm that the affected service and the peer services or containers expected to communicate are attached to the same intended overlay.

  3. Run docker network inspect <network-name> and compare the connected service containers or tasks with the current task placement. A service may be added to an overlay or disconnected from one during an update, so verify membership rather than assuming it is unchanged.

Docker documents docker service ps for listing a service’s tasks and networks, and docker network inspect for inspecting which service containers are connected to a network. If inspection shows a missing attachment, first establish whether it was intentional and which services are affected. Only then consider a change such as docker service update --network-add <network> <service>; --network-rm removes a network and should not be used as a diagnostic experiment.

Find out whether the failure is limited to cross-node traffic

Test communication between affected tasks or containers on the same node, then across different nodes. A failure limited to cross-node communication points toward the inter-node path; failure within one node as well means the issue cannot be explained solely by blocked traffic between hosts. Do not treat a container health check as proof of cross-host reachability unless that check actually tests the relevant peer and path.

For a multi-node Swarm, Docker documents these inter-node port requirements:

Port and protocol Documented role Diagnostic relevance
TCP and UDP 7946 Network discovery Check this for Swarm node-to-node discovery; it is distinct from overlay packet transport.
UDP 4789 Overlay data path by default Check this when overlay traffic must cross nodes. Account for an alternate data-path port if the Swarm is configured to use one.

Validate reachability between the Swarm nodes within your organization’s network security policy. These requirements are for inter-node communication, not an instruction to expose ports broadly to the public internet. A discovery-port problem and an overlay data-path-port problem affect different layers, so confirming one does not confirm the other.

Correlate the symptoms with updates and task replacement

Compare the first observed connectivity failure with service updates, task replacements, and node availability changes. Review the service’s update status and policy alongside the task history; a service-level state alone does not show whether a task replacement or placement change coincided with the network symptoms.

Docker documents a default --update-monitor period of 30 seconds. A task that fails during the first 30 seconds after it starts counts toward the service update failure threshold; a failure after that period does not count toward that threshold. This value helps interpret update status, but it does not prove that an update caused an overlay outage.

Check the documented overlay scale condition only if it fits

Docker Docs’ “Overlay network driver” page says: “Due to limitations set by the Linux kernel, overlay networks become unstable and inter-container communications may break when 1000 containers are co-located on the same host.” Check whether the deployment actually has 1,000 containers on one host before applying this explanation. The documented condition is specific; it is not a universal limit for every Swarm cluster or an established cause of a smaller deployment’s incident.

What evidence is needed to identify the cause

The available symptoms do not identify a single root cause. Before naming one or changing configuration, collect the information that distinguishes task-state, network-attachment, and inter-node-path problems:

  • Docker Engine and kernel versions, cluster size, node list, and which nodes host the affected tasks.

  • Output from docker service ps <service-name>, including task history, placement, and error messages, plus the service’s current network configuration.

  • Output from docker network inspect <network-name> for the affected overlay.

  • Whether communication fails between tasks on the same node, across nodes, or both, and which peers and ports were tested.

  • The time the connectivity loss began, recent service updates or task replacements, relevant update policy, node availability changes, and firewall or routing changes.

With those details, the incident can be narrowed to a concrete branch. Without them, claiming that the service failure itself cut healthy peers off—or that a particular port, update, or scale limit caused the loss—would go beyond the evidence.
