Usually, you should not choose a Nexus 7000 for a new deployment: Cisco ended sales of the series on October 12, 2023. An existing installation may still be usable, but its support deadline depends on the exact chassis and components. Cisco points to the Nexus 9000 family as an upgrade direction, not as a guaranteed drop-in replacement. Decide based on the installed model, feature and capacity needs, software status, support eligibility, and migration cost.

What the Nexus 7000 is—and whether Cisco still sells it

The Cisco Nexus 7000 and 7700 are modular data-center switches running NX-OS. Cisco describes the family as offering programmable tools and high-density 10, 40, and 100 Gigabit Ethernet options. Those are vendor product descriptions, not independent performance-test results. Cisco’s support catalog says of the series: “This product is supported by Cisco, but is no longer being sold.”

Cisco lists October 12, 2023 as the series end-of-sale date. That means the Nexus 7000 is a legacy platform rather than a current new-product choice from Cisco. It does not, by itself, mean every installed chassis has already lost support.

When does Nexus 7000 support end?

The series-level date and the individual chassis dates are not interchangeable. Cisco lists October 31, 2028 as the end-of-support date for the series, but its catalog gives several Nexus 7000 chassis models an earlier deadline. Check the exact product ID, and verify the lifecycle of installed line cards and software separately.

What replaces the Nexus 7000?

Cisco identifies the Nexus 9000 family as the upgrade direction. It includes traditional Layer 2/3 switching and Cisco ACI options. That family-level recommendation is not a validated migration design: the sources do not provide a configuration-specific feature or compatibility matrix for your network.

Before selecting a successor, compare the proposed configuration against the requirements that matter in your deployment:

  • Protocols and features: confirm the functions and configurations in active use are supported on the proposed platform.
  • Interfaces and capacity: match port speeds, density, optics, scale, and redundancy requirements.
  • Operating model: decide whether traditional NX-OS switching or an ACI deployment fits your operations and architecture.
  • Connections and environment: check compatibility with attached systems, along with power, cooling, and rack-space constraints.
  • Long-term cost and risk: include the support and security-maintenance horizon, migration work, and the cost of potential disruption.

Should you keep an installed Nexus 7000?

Keeping an existing switch temporarily can be reasonable if its exact lifecycle and security posture are acceptable for your organization and you have a credible plan for support, spares, and eventual migration. Whether that is an acceptable risk depends on your requirements; the published lifecycle dates cannot decide it for you.

Review the installed chassis, supervisors, line cards, fabric modules, and power supplies as a complete system. Confirm software compatibility and the support status of each relevant product ID. A series date alone does not establish the status of every component or configuration.

Does buying a used Nexus 7000 make sense?

Used or refurbished hardware may be relevant when extending an existing deployment, but it does not restore Cisco’s ended sales channel or automatically confer Cisco support. Before buying, verify the exact chassis and modules, software compatibility, hardware condition, and whether the specific equipment and deployment qualify for the support you need. Compare that total cost and risk with migration to a supported platform.
