Capcom designed the remake to appeal to both returning players and newcomers, and Capcom USA staff recommended it as a starting point for new players. Playing the original is optional context for comparing the two versions—not homework required to understand the remake.
Can you understand the remakes without playing the originals?
For Resident Evil 2, yes. In a 2018 interview, producer Tsuyoshi Kanda said the remake was intended to entertain people who had played the original as well as those who had not. That supports treating the 2019 game as a complete starting point, rather than an installment that assumes you already know the original.

That answer is strongest for Resident Evil 2; it should not be stretched into a blanket rule covering every remake, sequel, or continuity question in the franchise. The evidence here does not establish a universal play order or that playing an original is necessary to understand later entries.
What changed between the original and the Resident Evil 2 remake?
Kanda said the remake keeps the overall plot while rearranging or adjusting some events to make the story easier to understand as a whole. The remake also replaces the original game’s Zapping System, where actions in one character’s campaign affected parts of the other’s, with Leon and Claire campaigns intended to present a comprehensive story.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
So there are two different reasons to consider the original: understanding the remake, which does not require it, and comparing how the same story and campaign structure were presented in the earlier game. The second is a choice for players curious about the differences, not evidence that the remake is incomplete.
Where should a new player start?
Capcom USA staff explicitly recommended Resident Evil 2 (2019) to new players as a “jumping-on point” for the series. That is Capcom staff’s guidance, not a definitive ranking of every game or a universal play order. If you’re interested in the remake, you can start there without first playing the 1998 original.

- FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
- A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.

- Want to follow the story? Start with the 2019 remake; prior play is not needed for the basic story.
- Want to see how the adaptation differs? Consider playing the original as well, particularly if the campaign structure and narrative presentation interest you.
- Wondering about every remake or later game? The evidence supports a clear answer for Resident Evil 2, not a single rule for the whole franchise.
What about other Resident Evil remakes?
A reported 2026 interview about a possible Resident Evil: Code: Veronica remake quotes producer Yoshiyaki Hirabayashi saying the original would not be required to enjoy that remake standalone. That is a reported statement about a different remake, not an official transcript or proof of a franchise-wide rule. It does not change the well-supported answer for Resident Evil 2.
