Your best order depends on what you value. Start with The Necromancer’s Tale for release-order storytelling and the later-era discoveries first. Start with The Lich Wars for the world’s earlier history, the origins of its necromancy and younger versions of familiar characters.
The direct answer: there is no prerequisite
Psychic Software describes The Lich Wars as “an entirely stand-alone game.” The developer explicitly says there is no need to have played The Necromancer’s Tale and that the two games can be played in either sequence. You should therefore choose based on preferred storytelling order, not concern about missing essential controls, plot explanations or required save data.
Playing The Necromancer’s Tale first can add recognition when earlier versions of familiar characters appear in The Lich Wars. That recognition is optional context, however. It is not a condition for understanding the prequel’s central story.

Beginning with The Necromancer’s Tale preserves the order in which the setting was originally presented. You encounter the later consequences and mysteries before moving back to the earlier period that explains them. Later-era reveals remain unreframed
A prequel can give background that changes how you interpret people, institutions and supernatural events in the original game. Playing The Necromancer’s Tale first lets its reveals stand on their own before The Lich Wars supplies historical context. The Lich Wars is intended to tell the earlier story properly and to investigate the origins of the setting’s necromancy. Starting there makes those origins part of your initial understanding of the world rather than a retrospective explanation after the later game.

You meet younger versions without needing recognition
The prequel can include familiar characters in their younger years, but it is written so that new players can follow them as characters in their own right. You may miss the extra dramatic irony that a returning player feels, but you will not be missing required background.

Psychic Software estimates approximately 300,000 words of hand-written narrative. That is an estimate from the developer’s 2026 announcement, not a released final word count.
