No. You can approach Kojima Productions’ PHYSINT without completing, or even starting, the Metal Gear series. The project has been presented as the studio’s third original intellectual property, not as an announced numbered Metal Gear sequel. Hideo Kojima has described it as a spy game with “plenty of new ideas and a different kind of spy action,” so earlier games are optional context rather than an entry requirement.
What PHYSINT is—and what has actually been announced
Kojima Productions’ September 17, 2026 announcement identifies PHYSINT as the studio’s third original IP and names Bill Skarsgård as its lead. The announcement frames the project as a culmination of Hideo Kojima’s 40-year career. Those details establish the project’s identity and headline talent, but they do not establish a shared story universe with Metal Gear.
Kojima’s reported description is deliberately broad: “It’s about spies, but I want plenty of new ideas and a different kind of spy action.” That is a statement about creative direction, not confirmation that characters, chronology, organizations or plotlines from Metal Gear will carry over. Treating the games as connected canon would go beyond the information currently available.

Why older Metal Gear games are optional preparation
PHYSINT is being positioned as a new IP
A new intellectual property gives the developers room to introduce its own setting, terminology and characters. Even if PHYSINT reflects ideas associated with Kojima’s earlier espionage work, familiarity with that work is not the same as narrative access. A new player should be able to learn the new game’s rules from its own opening and tutorials.
The announced design goal points away from a straight replay
Kojima’s emphasis on “new ideas” and a “different kind of spy action” matters for expectations. Earlier Metal Gear titles can show how Kojima has handled stealth, surveillance, gadgets, cinematic interruptions and political themes, but they cannot reliably predict the controls or mission structure of PHYSINT. Playing old games as if they were a mechanical tutorial for the new project could create the wrong expectations.
An official Metal Gear starting-point FAQ supports a newcomer-friendly approach
PlayStation’s official FAQ for METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER answers the question “Do I need to have played other Metal Gear games?” with “No.” It explains that the story occurs at the very start of the saga, making that title a starting point. The FAQ addresses Delta, not PHYSINT, so it is not a direct promise about the new project; it does show that Kojima-related espionage games are not inherently designed around a requirement to finish the entire back catalogue.

The best single optional primer: Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
If you want to play one older game before PHYSINT, the most practical choice is Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. It is a full enhanced remake of 2004’s METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SNAKE EATER, and its story is set at the chronological beginning of the Metal Gear saga. That combination gives newcomers a coherent entry without asking them to learn decades of prior continuity first.
Why Delta works as a first game
- Chronological position: the story begins the saga, so you are not entering in the middle of an established timeline.
- Self-contained introduction: you encounter the series’ espionage vocabulary, character conflicts and political stakes through an origin-era story rather than by decoding later references.
- New-player controls: the game includes an optional modern control style aimed at people experiencing the series for the first time. You can choose that approach instead of reproducing older control conventions.
- Current console and PC access: Konami’s launch notice lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam, with availability beginning August 28, 2025.
Choose Delta if you want a substantial sample of the series’ stealth-and-spycraft identity, a modernized presentation and a clear chronological starting point. Do not choose it because the announced information says PHYSINT requires it; no such requirement has been published.
Other ways to sample the series
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1
For a broader historical sample, METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1 groups three foundational games: Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. This route shows how the series’ stealth systems, camera conventions, political storytelling and cinematic presentation developed across multiple releases.

The collection is a better fit than Delta if you specifically want to compare design eras or understand references that arose after the third game. It also asks for more time and tolerance for older interfaces and controls. The cited material does not specify a platform list for this collection, so check the edition available for your system before purchasing.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA complete franchise playthrough
Playing every major Metal Gear installment can provide the widest context for recurring themes, character relationships and the series’ shifting political ideas. It is also the largest time commitment and the least efficient answer to a narrow question about preparing for PHYSINT. No announcement identifies a full-series playthrough as necessary, and no confirmed PHYSINT story details currently justify treating it as required homework.
Which route fits your goal?
| Preparation route | Time commitment | Continuity value | Controls and accessibility | Availability stated in the cited material |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Play Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater | One modern remake | Begins the saga chronologically; gives a focused introduction | Optional modern control style for newcomers | PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam; launched August 28, 2025 |
| Play Master Collection Vol. 1 | Three games: Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater | Broader historical and thematic context across the trilogy | Includes original-era games; the cited material does not specify a modern-control option for the collection | Platform list not stated in the cited material |
| Play the full franchise | Largest commitment, spanning many releases | Maximum character and political context | Controls and presentation vary by game | Complete availability list not stated in the cited material |
| Start PHYSINT directly | No preparation time | Depends on the new game’s own exposition | Will be determined by PHYSINT’s final design | Release date and final platform list have not been announced in the cited material |
For most readers, the first row is the sensible compromise: one accessible game that demonstrates the lineage without turning preparation into a second project. Select the collection only if the history of the series interests you independently of PHYSINT.

What older games can teach you—and what they cannot
Useful context
- Stealth fundamentals: you can see how concealment, enemy awareness, sound and route planning function in Kojima-designed missions.
- Espionage language: terms such as infiltration, surveillance, extraction and covert operations recur across spy fiction, and the older games provide examples in context.
- Cinematic pacing: long cutscenes, codec-style conversations, tonal shifts and visual experimentation are part of the series’ recognizable presentation history.
- Recurring themes: the games explore technology, deterrence, loyalty, information and the human cost of military systems. That thematic background can make you more alert to references or contrasts in a future Kojima project.
Things you should not assume
- Shared continuity: the available announcement does not say that PHYSINT occupies the Metal Gear timeline.
- Identical mechanics: “a different kind of spy action” signals that equipment, movement, mission objectives and enemy behavior may differ substantially.
- Returning characters: Bill Skarsgård’s confirmed lead role does not identify a Metal Gear character or establish a crossover.
- A release timetable: no release date is confirmed in the cited material, so avoid planning a marathon around an assumed launch window.
A practical decision guide for newcomers
Choose no preparation if you mainly want PHYSINT
Start with PHYSINT when it becomes available and let its own tutorial, opening scenes and terminology establish the world. This is the cleanest approach if you are interested in a new spy game rather than in the history of one particular franchise.
Choose Delta if you want one representative experience
Pick Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater when you want one polished, chronological introduction before trying the new project. Use the optional modern control style if older control layouts are a barrier, and treat the game as a sample of Kojima’s earlier design—not a specification for PHYSINT.

Choose the full saga only for its own sake
A complete run makes sense for enthusiasts who want every connection and thematic development. It is disproportionate preparation for PHYSINT unless future official information specifically identifies older titles as relevant.
How much does the series’ popularity matter?
Konami Holdings Corporation reported in 2024 that the Metal Gear series had sold more than 60 million copies. That figure explains why many readers encounter expectations, references and fan discussions before playing, but popularity is not a prerequisite. A large audience and a long history make optional background easier to find; they do not turn the back catalogue into an entry test for a separately announced original IP.
Bottom line for your play order
Play older Metal Gear games only if you want the additional context. If you want one recommendation, start with Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater because it begins the saga, offers an optional modern control style and is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. If your only goal is to understand PHYSINT, wait for the new game’s own details rather than assuming that a decades-long franchise marathon is necessary.
