For Marvel, the answer depends on the series: PlayStation says Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 does not require prior story knowledge, though the earlier Insomniac games add context. “Marvel games” do not share one universal play order.
Do you need to play CONTROL before CONTROL Resonant?
No. Remedy’s support page, “CONTROL Resonant Is Out Now,” says, “You don’t need to have played the original to begin Dylan’s story.” Remedy announced that CONTROL Resonant launched worldwide on September 24, 2026; check the store for your platform and region to confirm availability.
The games are connected through the Faden siblings, but they follow different protagonists. In the original CONTROL, Jesse searches for her missing brother Dylan in the Federal Bureau of Control’s Oldest House. CONTROL Resonant follows Dylan. PlayStation describes the new game as a fresh entry point, while noting that returning players may recognize echoes of Jesse’s story and mysteries connecting the siblings. Choose based on how much backstory you want
- Start with CONTROL Resonant if you want Dylan’s story without playing the earlier game first.
- Play CONTROL first if you want Jesse’s perspective and the earlier context for the siblings’ relationship and shared world.
In an Xbox Wire interview published May 8, 2026, Remedy Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen described the games as siblings in a shared world and said there was “no pressure to play the first Control before Resonant.” The protagonists are each positioned to discover their own fate. Do you need earlier Marvel games before Marvel’s Spider-Man 2?
For Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series, no. PlayStation’s official FAQ says you can enjoy Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 without prior story or character knowledge, while recommending earlier titles to experience the developing narrative more fully. Play in this order for the fuller story
- Marvel’s Spider-Man
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
If you only want to play Spider-Man 2, PlayStation says prior story knowledge is not required. If you want the character and story developments leading into it, play the preceding games in order. Platform availability and edition names can differ, so check the listing for your system before buying.

Why “Marvel games” has no single play order
The guidance above applies to Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man continuity. It does not establish an order for every game featuring Marvel characters. Different Marvel games may belong to separate stories, so check the specific game’s official guidance rather than assuming that playing another Marvel title is required.
