No. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II is officially described as a standalone 10-episode anime with a new cast and a new story in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. You can watch it without playing the game or seeing the first anime. Playing the game first is optional context for Night City, its technology and its institutions—not required homework.

What “standalone” means for Edgerunners II

CD PROJEKT RED presents Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II as “a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077.” Netflix Tudum likewise calls it “the standalone, 10-episode story,” describing a chronicle of redemption and revenge in a violent city. Those descriptions answer the prerequisite question directly: the series is intended to work as its own narrative rather than as a continuation that assumes you completed a game.

Standalone does not mean the anime is unrelated to the game. It uses the same fictional setting and the same broad cyberpunk framework. The connection is a shared world, not a requirement to know the game’s plot. The announced premise supplies its own entry point through a new cast and a new story, so a first-time viewer can begin with the anime itself.

The distinction matters because “set in the world of” and “adapted from the game’s campaign” are very different promises. Official announcements use the former language. Nothing in those announcements says that the anime retells Cyberpunk 2077, requires a particular game ending or assumes that viewers have completed any quest line.

What the game can add—and what it cannot be required to add

Playing Cyberpunk 2077 can provide optional familiarity with Night City, the setting’s terminology, its technology and the institutions that shape life there. That is a reasonable inference from the fact that both works inhabit the same world and that the official Cyberpunk site invites fans to “Play Cyberpunk 2077 and carve your own path through the dark future.” The game lets you explore that world interactively, while the anime delivers a fixed story through its own characters.

Optional familiarity is different from necessary preparation. A viewer may recognize a term or institution more quickly after playing, but the official standalone description means the show is not sold as an exercise in recalling game lore. If you do not know the game, you are not missing a required tutorial; you are simply encountering the setting through the anime’s chosen point of view.

There is also no publisher-backed completion threshold. You do not need to finish the main story, reach a particular level, select a particular character path or play a first game before starting the sequel anime. Any decision to play beforehand should therefore be based on the kind of experience you want, not on fear that the show will be inaccessible without a checklist of achievements.

Is the first Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime required?

No. The original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was also announced as a standalone 10-episode story in the same universe. For the sequel, the official material emphasizes an all-new story and a new cast. CD PROJEKT RED’s teaser copy says, “David is dead. But Night City lives on.” That line signals that the previous protagonist’s story is not being presented as mandatory setup for the new series.

  • Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night City

Watching the first anime may still be appealing if you want more of the universe or want to understand why the setting has an existing animated history. It is a preference choice, not an entry requirement. The sequel’s standalone positioning means you can watch it first, watch the original later, or watch only the sequel without treating either order as an error.

Which preparation choice fits you?

Choice What you get Main trade-off Best fit
Watch Edgerunners II first Immediate access to the new cast and its redemption-and-revenge story Less prior familiarity with Night City’s terminology and institutions Viewers whose priority is the anime
Play Cyberpunk 2077 first Interactive exposure to the shared world, technology and institutions A long role-playing game requires a substantially larger time commitment than a 10-episode series Players who want to explore the setting before watching
Watch the anime, then play the game The new story arrives without game-story expectations, followed by optional interactive exploration The game becomes a follow-up activity rather than preparation Spoiler-sensitive viewers and anime-first audiences
Watch both anime entries before deciding about the game Two self-contained animated stories in the same universe You postpone the game’s interactive version of Night City Viewers interested in animation more than role-playing games

Recommended paths for different viewers

If you are new to Cyberpunk altogether

Start with Edgerunners II. The official format gives you a contained 10-episode commitment and introduces a new cast rather than asking you to learn the game’s systems first. Pay attention to the story the anime presents on its own terms. If the setting interests you afterward, the game can become a separate way to explore Night City.

If you already play or plan to play the game

You can choose either order without treating one as canonically mandatory. Playing first may make shared terminology and institutions feel familiar. Watching first keeps the anime’s new story from being filtered through expectations about how the game works. Choose according to whether you prefer interactive discovery or a tightly paced television narrative as your introduction.

If you watched the original Edgerunners

You do not need to rewatch it as preparation. The sequel is described as a new standalone entry, and the official teaser explicitly closes the door on David’s continuing story while pointing to Night City’s survival. Rewatch the original only if you want its separate emotional experience, not because the sequel’s premise depends on a recap.

If you are worried about spoilers

Watching the anime first is the cleaner route when you want to encounter its new story without importing assumptions from a game campaign. Playing first is still valid, but it may give you broader setting knowledge before you meet the sequel’s characters. The official announcements do not identify the game’s plot as a prerequisite, so there is no required spoiler-management order imposed by the creators.

A two-minute decision test

  1. Ask what you actually want to consume first. If the answer is an anime, start the anime. If the answer is an interactive role-playing game, start the game.
  2. Measure the commitment you want to make. The anime is announced as 10 episodes; the game is a long role-playing experience. Do not choose the larger commitment merely to satisfy a nonexistent requirement.
  3. Decide whether context or story priority matters more. Choose the game first for optional world familiarity; choose the anime first for immediate access to its new cast and narrative.
  4. Set a stopping rule. If you begin the game only for background, there is no official need to finish it before watching. You can switch to the anime whenever your preferred order calls for it.

If you play first, use the game as enrichment

Approach the game as an additional perspective rather than a study guide. The useful preparation is broad orientation: notice how Night City functions as a place, how technology affects daily life and conflict, and how institutions influence the people living there. Those categories are the kinds of familiarity a shared setting can provide; they are not a list of mandatory lore facts.

Keep the distinction between player choice and authored television clear. The game asks you to carve your own path, as the official Cyberpunk site puts it. The anime follows the path selected by its writers. Recognizing that difference prevents a common disappointment: expecting the show to reproduce your game decisions or to retell the game’s campaign from another angle. Its announced identity is a new story with a new cast.

If you watch first, set the right expectations

Begin with the premise supplied by the official announcements: a standalone 10-episode story set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, centered on redemption and revenge. You are not being asked to identify every reference before the plot can make sense. Treat Night City as the series’ setting and let the new characters establish what matters to their story.

Afterward, you can decide whether the game’s interactive form appeals to you. The game offers a way to spend more time in the same dark future, but it is not a required second season or an explanatory appendix. Watching first preserves the anime as a complete experience while leaving the game available as optional exploration.

Release date and where to watch

Netflix Tudum and CD PROJEKT RED list October 20, 2026, as the anime’s Netflix release date. The announcement describes Netflix as the streaming home. Release timing and catalog access can vary by country, so confirm the date and availability in your region when you are ready to watch.

The date is a scheduled release detail, not a reason to delay viewing until you have played the game. If the series is available where you live, its official standalone format is the relevant preparation guidance.

Common misconceptions to avoid

“I must finish Cyberpunk 2077 first.”

There is no official statement making completion mandatory. The published description says standalone, not “epilogue to the game” or “adaptation of the game’s ending.”

“I have to play the first game before the sequel anime.”

The sequel uses the world of Cyberpunk 2077, but the new-cast, standalone language applies to the anime’s entry point. The game is an optional companion, not a gate.

“I have to watch the first anime first.”

The original series was itself announced as standalone. The sequel’s materials present a new story and identify David’s story as finished, so a recap is not established as required setup.

“Standalone means the setting will be unrelated.”

Standalone describes the story’s independence, not a different universe. Expect the sequel to remain in the Cyberpunk 2077 world while following its own characters and conflict.

Practical viewing orders

  1. Anime-first order: Watch Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II, then decide whether to play Cyberpunk 2077 for interactive exploration.
  2. Game-first order: Play as much of Cyberpunk 2077 as you genuinely want, then watch the anime without treating completion as a condition.
  3. Animation-first order: Watch the original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, watch the sequel as its own standalone story, and approach the game only if the shared world interests you.

All three orders respect the information the creators have published. The best choice is the one that matches your preferred medium, available time and tolerance for entering a setting without prior context.
