No. One person buys and runs a Jackbox Party Pack on the device that hosts the game. Everyone else joins that session for free at jackbox.tv using a phone, tablet, laptop or another web browser. You need another purchase only when you want to install and host the game on a different platform, because Jackbox purchases stay tied to the platform where they were made.
How Jackbox ownership works
Jackbox separates the device that runs the game from the devices that enter answers. The host launches a Party Pack on a supported computer, console, tablet or TV device. The game displays a room code. Other people use their browsers as controllers, entering that code and a player name. Their phones and tablets do not run the Party Pack itself.

That means a single purchased copy is enough for one hosted session, even if every player uses a different type of device. A friend on an iPhone, another on an Android phone, and someone on a laptop can all join the same game. None of them needs to buy the pack, install a Jackbox app or create a Jackbox account.
The host owns the game license
The host’s device must have the Party Pack installed and must stay available for the duration of the game. Jackbox family guidance lists PC and Mac, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, iPad, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV as host options. The exact pack and platform availability can vary, so check the storefront listing before buying.

Players use a browser
Players open jackbox.tv in a current browser, enter the room code shown on the host screen and follow the prompts. Their browser session supplies answers, votes and other controls; it does not grant them ownership of the game. A player can therefore join without being on the same operating system or console family as the host.
The game screen must be visible
Jackbox is designed around a shared screen. In the same room, the host can display the game on a television or monitor. For remote groups, the host shares the game window or desktop through a video-call or streaming service such as Discord. Players need both the browser page for controls and a way to see the game’s questions, timers and results.
What each person needs
| Person or role | Required | Not required |
|---|---|---|
| Host | A supported device with the chosen Party Pack purchased and installed; a screen that everyone can see; an internet connection for the players’ browser sessions | A separate copy for every player; a special controller for each guest |
| In-person player | Phone, tablet or laptop with a web browser; access to the host’s room code | Jackbox purchase, Jackbox app or Jackbox account |
| Remote player | Phone, tablet or computer running a browser, plus access to the host’s shared game screen | The host’s platform, console account or storefront account |
The host’s copy covers the session, not every device that happens to participate. If a household has several phones and tablets, none needs an additional Jackbox purchase for players to join the host.

Jackbox states that purchases are not transferable between platforms. A Party Pack bought through a PC or Mac storefront does not unlock the Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Apple TV or Fire TV edition. If you later want to host directly from one of those platforms, you must purchase the game for that platform as well.
This rule concerns where the game is installed and hosted. It does not prevent people on other platforms from joining as browser players. For example, a Steam-hosted game can accept answers from phones, tablets and laptops, while a Switch-hosted game can accept the same kinds of browser connections.
Buying for two host devices
If you regularly host in two places, decide whether each place uses a different platform. A laptop copy remains a laptop or Mac storefront license; it does not become a console license when you connect the computer to a television. Connecting a laptop to a TV with HDMI changes the display, not the platform ownership.
Likewise, purchasing on a console does not provide a downloadable computer copy. Plan around the device that will normally run the Party Pack, and budget for another platform purchase only if you want that second device to host independently.
Host-platform choices
| Host platform | Why it may fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Steam or another PC/Mac storefront | Easy to move the computer between rooms, convenient for remote screen sharing and streaming, and suitable for a monitor or television through HDMI | The license stays with that PC/Mac storefront and does not transfer to consoles or TV platforms. |
| Nintendo Switch | Portable console that can move between rooms or locations | The Switch edition is a separate purchase from PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Apple TV and Fire TV editions. |
| PlayStation or Xbox | Good fit when a console is already connected to the living-room television | The purchase remains platform-specific, and moving the host setup is less convenient than carrying a laptop or Switch. |
| Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV | Simple TV-based hosting when that device is already part of the household setup | You still need to buy the platform version and keep the host screen visible; guests continue to play through browsers. |
| iPad | Can serve as a compact host device where the supported edition is available | Availability depends on the specific pack and regional store listing; the purchase does not transfer to other platforms. |
There is no universally best host platform. Choose the one that will be connected to the screen, network and speakers you actually use for game nights. If remote play is common, a computer may simplify screen sharing. If everyone gathers around a television, an existing console or TV device may be more convenient. Portability favors a Switch or laptop.

How to host a game, step by step
- Choose the host platform. Decide whether the game will normally run on a PC/Mac, Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, iPad, Apple TV or Fire TV. Check that the specific Party Pack is sold for that platform in your region.
- Buy and install the Party Pack on that platform. The purchase is attached to the storefront or device platform used at checkout. Installing it on one platform does not create licenses on the others.
- Prepare the shared display. Open the game on the host device and connect it to the television or monitor if needed. A computer can use HDMI for a larger in-person screen.
- Launch a game from the pack. The title screen will show the room code and instructions for joining. Keep this game screen visible while people connect.
- Have each player open the browser page. Players go to jackbox.tv on a phone, tablet or laptop. They enter the room code exactly as shown and choose a player name when prompted.
- Start when everyone appears. The host advances from the lobby. Players continue using their browser devices for answers, drawings, choices or votes while watching the shared screen for prompts and results.
How remote play works
Remote players do not connect to the host’s console account or storefront. The host shares the running game screen through a video-call or streaming service, while each guest separately opens the browser controller page. This creates two necessary channels: one for seeing the game and one for sending answers.
Recommended remote setup
- The host runs the Party Pack on the purchased platform and shares the game window or full desktop.
- Players keep the shared video on one screen and open jackbox.tv on a phone or second computer screen.
- Use a stable connection and reduce unnecessary audio or video sharing if the game screen becomes difficult to follow.
- The host should avoid covering the room code with another window while new players are joining.
Because guests are using browsers, a remote group can mix phones, tablets, Macs and Windows laptops without matching the host’s platform. The host’s upload quality and screen-sharing method affect how clearly remote players see the game, but they do not change the purchase rule.
Accounts, subscriptions and Amazon Luna
Ordinary purchased Jackbox games do not require a Jackbox account. Jackbox support says there are no recurring charges for games you own, and that a purchase can be played indefinitely on the platform where it was made. Players joining a host likewise do not need to register an account.
Amazon Luna’s Jackbox Games Channel is a separate subscription service. Access through that channel should not be confused with buying a Party Pack once from a normal platform storefront. Check the current Luna terms and availability if you choose that route; subscription access can follow different rules from an owned copy.

Common questions about devices and players
Do my friends need to own Jackbox too?
No. One person’s host copy is enough for the session. Friends use a browser on their own phones, tablets or computers and do not purchase the Party Pack merely to join.
Can I buy Jackbox on Steam and play with people on phones?
Yes. The Steam or other PC/Mac copy runs on the host computer. Phone players join through jackbox.tv and watch the computer’s monitor or shared television screen.
Can players join from different platforms?
Yes. Player devices are browser controllers, not platform editions of the game. A host on one supported platform can have guests using different phone, tablet and computer operating systems.

Do players need a Jackbox app?
No. The standard player method is a web browser at jackbox.tv. Installing an app is not necessary for ordinary play.

Can I move a purchase from one platform to another?
No. Jackbox’s platform guidance says that buying on one platform and later wanting another requires another purchase. Choose the host platform with future use in mind.
Troubleshooting connection and ownership problems
The room code is rejected
- Check that every player is entering the current code from the host’s screen, not a code from an earlier round.
- Have the player reload the browser page and re-enter the code carefully.
- Confirm that the host has actually launched a game and is still displaying its lobby.
Players can enter but cannot see the game
Browser controls alone are not enough. In the same room, move the host display where everyone can see it. Remotely, the host must share the game window or desktop in addition to telling players to open the browser page.
A buyer expects the game on another device
Verify the platform used at checkout. A computer storefront purchase, Switch purchase and console purchase are separate licenses. Connecting one device to another screen does not transfer ownership, and browser players do not need that second license unless they want to host from it.

The game is unavailable in a store
Platform support and regional listings can change. Check the current storefront for the specific Party Pack and device before paying. If that platform is not listed, select a supported host device rather than assuming another platform’s license will work.
Bottom line for choosing what to buy
Buy one Party Pack on the device that will host your game nights. Tell every guest to join at jackbox.tv with a browser, and make the host screen visible in the room or through screen sharing. Purchase again only when you want to run Jackbox directly on a different platform; the original license will not transfer there.
