Usually, no. Free streaming channels on a compatible smart TV arrive through an app or the TV’s built-in channel service, so they do not need an antenna or a paid subscription. They do require an internet connection, and many are supported by ads. An antenna is for receiving local over-the-air broadcasts; a paid live-TV service is optional if you want a different channel lineup.

Three ways to watch TV on a smart TV

Option What you get Antenna needed? Subscription needed? What to check
Free streaming apps or built-in free channels Internet-delivered live channels and, depending on the service, on-demand programs No Usually no for the free tier Internet access, app or platform compatibility, regional availability, and ads
Over-the-air broadcast TV Local broadcast stations receivable at your location Yes No recurring channel subscription Local signal availability, antenna placement, and reception conditions
Paid live-TV streaming A provider’s paid live-channel lineup delivered over the internet No Yes Current price, lineup, and availability in your market

These options are not interchangeable. A free streaming app does not necessarily carry the local stations an antenna can receive, and an antenna does not provide every local channel in every location. Compare the services by the channels you actually want, your internet connection, interruptions from ads, TV compatibility, and any recurring cost.

Which free streaming channels can you watch?

It depends on your TV platform, installed apps, country, and the provider’s current lineup. For example, Google says U.S. Android TV users can access built-in Google TV live channels without installing an app, signing up, or subscribing. It also lists free live channels from Haystack News, Plex, Pluto TV, and Tubi, which require their respective apps. These are examples for the stated platform and market—not a guarantee that every smart TV has those channels. Google’s Android TV help page explains the available options.

Google’s U.S. Google TV guide also lists paid providers such as YouTube TV, Sling TV, and Philo alongside free services. A provider appearing in a platform guide does not guarantee that its app or every channel is available on your specific TV or in your area. Check both the TV’s app store and the provider’s current availability. Google’s Google TV support page describes these provider options.

Channel totals are platform- and provider-specific, and lineups change. Roku’s page currently advertises 500+ free live streaming channels on The Roku Channel and 100+ free local channels; those are Roku’s figures, not an independent comparison or a promise that every viewer can receive them. Roku’s live-TV page gives its current claims. Google’s announcement of more than 800 free channels on Google TV was published in 2023, so it is a historical platform-specific figure, not a current total for all smart TVs. Google’s announcement dates that figure.

Do free streaming channels have ads?

Often, yes. “Free” usually means there is no subscription charge for that tier, not that viewing is ad-free. Tubi says short ad breaks fund its content and that it does not charge a subscription fee. Ad practices can differ by service and program; see Tubi’s explanation of its ad-supported service.

When do you need an antenna?

You need an antenna to receive over-the-air broadcasts, not to stream channels through an app. If local broadcast stations are what you want, reception depends on your location, antenna, surroundings, and setup. Roku’s guidance for Roku TVs describes connecting an HDTV antenna to receive local stations; the same basic distinction applies to TVs with an antenna input. Roku’s live-TV guide describes the option.

Connect and scan for local channels

  1. Connect the antenna to the TV’s antenna input.
  2. Open the TV’s antenna or live-TV settings and start a channel scan. Menu labels vary by brand and model.
  3. If reception is poor, try placing the antenna higher, near a window, and away from thick walls, metal, concrete, or other obstructions.
  4. After moving the antenna, scan for channels again. Roku notes that repositioning can require a new scan. See Roku’s antenna and cable-TV support guidance.

A scan only finds stations receivable under the conditions at your location; it cannot guarantee a particular channel lineup.

How to find free channels on your TV

  1. Open the TV’s Live or Apps area and see whether it already offers built-in free channels.
  2. Search the TV’s app store for services such as Tubi or Pluto TV. Confirm the app works with your exact TV model and is available in your country.
  3. Open the service and follow its on-screen instructions. Some built-in channels may not require an app installation or sign-up, while other services require their app; free does not mean every service has identical setup steps.
  4. If you want local broadcast stations that the apps do not provide, check reception in your area and consider an antenna.
  5. Consider a paid live-TV service only if its current lineup includes channels or programming you want that the free services and local broadcasts do not cover.

What to check before choosing

  • Channels: Check the actual lineup for your location rather than relying on a broad channel-count claim.
  • TV compatibility: App support varies by model, operating system, and region. Verify the exact TV before relying on a service.
  • Internet: App-based streaming needs an internet connection; an antenna receives broadcasts over the air instead.
  • Ads and cost: Check whether the free tier includes ads and whether any service you are considering requires payment.
  • Local reception: An antenna’s results depend on your location and setup. Do not assume it will receive every local station.
