Some streaming services let you watch a free, ad-supported catalogue without subscribing. Other services require a paid plan, and a title may be excluded from a particular plan even when you pay. The answer depends on the show, service, plan, and country, so check the title’s page and the local plan terms before signing up.
Ways a streaming show may be available
| Access route | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Free, ad-supported service | You can watch titles in the service’s free catalogue without a paid subscription; advertising funds access. | Tubi says it is free and supported by ads, and explains that ad breaks appear during movies and TV shows at its ad information page. That does not mean every show is in its catalogue. |
| Ad-supported paid plan | You pay for a subscription tier that includes advertising; some titles may not be available on it. | Netflix says most titles are available on its ad-supported plan; a lock icon marks titles that are unavailable on that plan. |
| Paid plan with reduced or no ads | You pay for a tier that reduces or generally removes ads from specified content, with possible exceptions. | Disney+ distinguishes ad-supported and no-ad plans, while noting exceptions for some live and linear programming. |
| Free trial or promotion | A temporary offer may provide access under conditions such as eligibility, a deadline, or automatic billing afterward. | Hulu’s agreement says trials or promotions may be offered on terms disclosed at sign-up; it does not guarantee that one is available to every customer. |
| One-time purchase | You pay once for certain content rather than subscribing to an ongoing plan. | Hulu’s agreement says it may offer one-time purchases for some content not otherwise included in a subscription. Availability depends on the title and offer. |
A free service and a paid subscription tier with ads are not the same thing. For example, Tubi describes its service as free and ad-funded, while Netflix’s ad-supported option is still a paid plan.
How to check whether a specific show requires payment
- Open the show’s page in the service you intend to use. Look for an included-with-plan label, a watch-with-ads label, a lock icon, or a purchase option. On Prime Video, for example, free ad-supported titles are labeled “watch with ads” or “with ads.”
- Check your exact plan. Netflix says most titles are available on its ad-supported plan, but unavailable ones display a lock icon. Do not assume a subscription includes every title on the service.
- Confirm the country. Catalogues and plan availability vary by region. Netflix’s help article requires a country selection to show plan information; a result in one country does not establish availability elsewhere.
- Read the offer terms before starting a trial or promotion. Check eligibility, the end date, and what happens afterward. Hulu says billing begins after a trial unless you cancel as instructed.
- Verify ad limits and exceptions if that matters to you. A paid plan may still include ads on some content. Prime Video says some free ad-supported content remains available alongside its Ad Free option. Disney+ notes exceptions for some live and linear programming, and Peacock says ads cannot be skipped while describing Premium Plus as having limited interruptions.
- Review the billing channel. The service’s terms may differ depending on whether you pay it directly or through a third party. Disney+ US says pricing can vary by plan and third-party billing partner.
What the service examples do—and do not—tell you
Tubi
Tubi says its service is free because of ads and that it has no ad-free option at this time. Those statements describe Tubi’s service, not whether a particular show is currently in its catalogue.
Netflix
Netflix’s ad-supported plan includes most movies and shows, not necessarily all of them. Use the title page and its lock indicator to check whether a specific title is available on that plan.

Hulu
Hulu may offer trials, promotions, or one-time purchases, but its agreement does not promise that any of those options will be offered to a particular customer or for a particular show. Review the conditions shown at registration, including post-trial billing.
Disney+
For the United States, Disney+ says it does not currently offer a free trial. Its ad information distinguishes ad-supported and no-ad plans, with exceptions for some live and linear content. Plan and pricing details can vary by billing partner.

Prime Video
Prime Video offers an Ad Free subscription, but it also has free ad-supported content. The title page’s “watch with ads” or “with ads” label identifies that content; the existence of an Ad Free option does not mean every title follows the same access route.
Peacock
Peacock says ads cannot be skipped and describes Premium Plus as providing limited interruptions. A plan name or upgrade alone is not a guarantee that all viewing will be completely ad-free.

Choose based on the show, not just the service name
Before paying, compare the exact title’s access route, whether the plan is free or paid, how ads are handled, whether a trial or promotion is available to you, what billing begins afterward, and whether the offer applies in your country. A service’s general description cannot establish the current availability of an unnamed show; the title page and local plan terms are the decisive checks.
