No. You can turn pages on a Kindle by swiping or tapping the screen, and some models offer other built-in controls. A separate remote is optional. The right alternative depends on whether you use a Kindle e-reader or a Kindle app, and on your e-reader’s generation.
Ways to turn pages without buying a remote
Swipe or tap the screen
On Kindle e-readers, swiping or tapping the display is the standard way to move through a book. In the Kindle app, continuous scrolling is another option, and you can change portrait or landscape orientation for comfort. Amazon describes these options in its Kindle accessibility guide.
Use Double Tap on two supported 2024 e-readers
Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition and Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (12th Generation), both released in 2024, have a Double Tap setting. To enable it, open All Settings > Device Options and turn on Double tap. While reading, tap twice quickly anywhere on the side or back of the device to advance a page. Amazon tested the feature with official Colorsoft and Paperwhite cases, but warns it may not work with every third-party case. See Amazon’s Double Tap instructions.
Use physical buttons already on some Kindles
Some Kindle Oasis generations have built-in physical page-turn buttons. If tactile controls are what you want, check whether your particular Oasis has them before shopping for an external remote; features vary by generation.

For Kindle apps on Android and Fire tablets
Amazon says volume controls can turn pages in the Kindle app on Android and Fire tablets. This applies to those apps, not to every Kindle e-reader. Fire tablets also support switch access: a compatible Bluetooth device can navigate and interact with the tablet, including turning Kindle book pages. Details are in Amazon’s accessibility guide.
