Trick-or-treating on Halloween 2026 happens before the U.S. clocks fall back: Halloween is Saturday, October 31, and daylight saving time ends the next morning, Sunday, November 1. In places that observe the change, clocks go from 2 a.m. back to 1 a.m. local time.
When do clocks fall back after Halloween 2026?
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) lists daylight saving time in 2026 as running from March 8 at 2 a.m. local time until November 1 at 2 a.m. local time. That puts the change after Halloween night, not before it. NIST’s daylight saving time rules explain that when the change takes effect, local clocks move from 2 a.m. back to 1 a.m., repeating the hour from 1 to 2.
Does every U.S. location change clocks?
No. Federal law allows states to exempt themselves from observing daylight saving time. The U.S. Department of Transportation lists Hawaii, most of Arizona, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands as places that do not observe it. Check the rule for your location if you are making plans across state or territorial lines. The DOT’s daylight saving time page explains the exemptions.
What time does trick-or-treating start?
There is no nationwide trick-or-treat start or end time established in the cited guidance. Hours are set locally, and the clock change does not create a national schedule. Check your city or town’s official website, school notice, neighborhood association, or event organizer for the times and any age or route guidance that applies where you live.

Make trick-or-treating easier to see
Halloween activity can mean low light, busy sidewalks, and drivers who may not expect children in the street. Alabama’s Department of Public Health published these state-level recommendations on October 1, 2026; the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) also offers standing Halloween safety guidance.
- Walk in a group on familiar routes or go with a trusted adult. Walk rather than run.
- Add reflective tape or other reflective details to costumes, treat bags, or accessories, and carry a flashlight.
- Use sidewalks where available. If you must walk along a road, stay at the edge facing traffic.
- Watch for vehicles and cross at intersections or marked crosswalks. Avoid crossing between parked cars or near driveways where visibility is limited.

Check costumes and treats
- Choose costumes labeled flame resistant, and keep loose or billowing fabric away from candles, flames, and other ignition sources, as CPSC advises.
- Have an adult inspect treats before children eat them. Discard items with broken seals, and favor factory-wrapped treats.
- Check allergen labels where relevant, and avoid choking hazards for young children.
The treat and choking-hazard recommendations are from the Alabama Department of Public Health; CPSC also advises adults to examine treats for tampering. Follow the relevant guidance for your household and any allergies or age-related risks.
