Studies show that accuracy varies by device, metric, person, and sleep conditions. A tracker can be useful for noticing broad patterns over time, but its number for one night is not a definitive measure—and it cannot diagnose a sleep disorder.
What does a sleep tracker actually measure?
Consumer wearables use signals such as movement and other sensor data to infer whether you are asleep or awake. Their software then estimates total sleep time and may assign sleep stages. This is different from polysomnography (PSG), a clinical test that records multiple physiological signals and is used as a reference in validation studies.
That distinction matters: a tracker can be good at recognizing periods of sleep without accurately identifying quiet wakefulness or agreeing with PSG on the total number of minutes slept.
How close are tracker estimates to a sleep study?
A 2025 meta-analysis pooled results from 24 studies involving 798 participants who wore consumer wrist trackers. Compared with PSG, the authors reported a mean total-sleep-time difference of −16.854 minutes (95% confidence interval −26.332 to −7.375 minutes). The analysis also found significant pooled differences in sleep efficiency, sleep latency, and wake after sleep onset. Read the 2025 meta-analysis.

This is an average across the devices and studies included, not a correction factor for an individual product or user. It does not mean every tracker reads short by about 17 minutes: the direction and size of error can differ by model, metric, and study conditions.
Why can a tracker get sleep duration wrong?
Quiet wakefulness can look like sleep
Many wearables infer sleep partly from inactivity. If you lie still while awake, a device may count some of that time as sleep. In a 2020 validation study of the Basis B1, researchers analyzed 40 nights from 18 adults. The device had 98.9% sensitivity for detecting sleep but only 8.1% specificity for detecting wake; it significantly overestimated total sleep time and underestimated wake after sleep onset. Detection scores are not the same as agreement in minutes
Sensitivity describes how often a device correctly identifies sleep when sleep is occurring; specificity describes how often it correctly identifies wake. Neither, by itself, tells you whether its estimate of total sleep time agrees with PSG. A high sleep sensitivity can coexist with weak wake detection, which is why a tracker may miss wakeful periods and report a longer night.
Results depend on the device, metric, and night
A 2024 one-night comparison involving 35 healthy adults aged 20–50 evaluated the Oura Ring Gen3, Fitbit Sense 2, and Apple Watch Series 8. Each reached at least 95% sensitivity for sleep versus wake, while sleep-stage sensitivities ranged from 50% to 86%; estimates differed by device and stage. The small, specific sample does not establish how those devices perform for every user, later software version, or night. Read the three-device comparison.

In a 2021 laboratory study, seven consumer devices were assessed over three nights in 34 healthy young adults, including a disrupted-sleep condition. The authors discussed proportional biases and their possible implications for disrupted nights and insomnia. Results from that setting cannot establish accuracy for every person or real-world night. How should you use your tracker’s sleep-duration number?
- Look for broad patterns. Compare your own estimates across weeks rather than treating one night as an exact count.
- Keep the metric in view. Total sleep time, wake after sleep onset, sleep efficiency, and sleep stages are different measures; accuracy on one does not establish accuracy on the others.
- Compare like with like. When evaluating a published claim, check the exact device and version, reference method, participant group, sleep conditions, and error measure. A pooled result or sensitivity score is not a model-specific guarantee.
- Pair estimates with your own record if useful. A simple sleep diary can help you note bedtime, wake time, and how you felt alongside wearable estimates. It is an optional record-keeping aid, not a proven way to make a tracker more accurate.
The available comparisons do not establish one universally most accurate current tracker. Algorithms may change, and results for a tested version should not automatically be applied to another version.

Can a sleep tracker diagnose insomnia or another sleep disorder?
No. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine says consumer sleep technology cannot currently be used to diagnose or treat sleep disorders. It notes that consumer-generated data may support a patient-clinician discussion when considered as part of an appropriate clinical evaluation. Read the AASM position statement.
If sleep problems persist or you have concerning symptoms, discuss them with a qualified healthcare professional rather than relying on a wearable’s score or duration estimate.
