Sometimes—but not always. AI Overhaul SSE recommends a new game when another AI-overhaul mod was already active. Its update instructions require a new save instead of overwriting an older save, and AIO Lite requires a new game or a save on which Lite has never been active. Compatibility depends on which records a mod changes: AI Overhaul edits NPC AI data and packages, so appearance replacers and other behavior mods may need patches, while Holds and Immersive Citizens are listed as incompatible.
When Skyrim NPC AI mods require a new save
There is no universal “all AI mods need a new save” rule. The correct answer depends on the mod variant, what was previously installed, and whether the plugin has already run on that save.

These are the author’s documented rules for AI Overhaul SSE, not a guarantee for every NPC-behavior mod. Always check the specific mod’s current readme before installing, updating, disabling or removing it.
What AI Overhaul SSE changes
The main file edits NPC records directly
AI Overhaul SSE version 1.9.5, by mnikjom and SpiderAkira, was listed as last updated on 19 June 2026. Its readme describes approximately 250 NPCs with edited AI, more than 275 new custom AI packages and behaviors, and over 300 idle markers placed around vanilla city layouts and interiors.

The main file directly changes each affected NPC’s AI Data tab, AI Packages list and the packages themselves. It also adds idle markers. Those are persistent record-level edits rather than a simple toggle that can be assumed safe to add or remove at any point in a playthrough.
AIO Lite uses a different approach
AIO Lite does not make the main file’s direct NPC edits and does not add the extra idle markers. Instead, its quest starts when you begin a new game or load a save with the plugin enabled for the first time. The author describes Lite as more compatible, but its update rule is stricter: use a new game or a save that never had Lite active.
“More compatible” does not mean universally compatible. Lite can still overlap with another mod that controls the same NPCs or behavior, so its own documentation remains the authority for a particular load order.
Why apparently compatible mods can still conflict
Record edits versus quest aliases
The main AI Overhaul file does not edit navmeshes and does not use the quest-alias system. Many other AI mods use quest aliases to assign or control NPC behavior. An alias-driven mod can therefore overwrite some behavior that AI Overhaul placed in an NPC’s records, even when the two plugins do not appear to edit the same form in an obvious way.

A concrete behavior conflict
AI Overhaul makes citizens more cautious during danger. Run For Your Lives can override that behavior by sending all NPCs inside houses. Both behaviors may work as designed, but only one can determine what a given NPC does when danger starts. This is why a compatibility list can classify a mod as compatible while a particular feature still takes precedence.
Navmesh and worldspace edits are separate risks
AI Overhaul’s readme says it does not edit navmesh. A city overhaul that changes navmesh or worldspace layout can still affect where an AI package expects an NPC to walk or idle. The absence of a navmesh edit in AI Overhaul reduces one conflict category; it does not eliminate conflicts created by another plugin’s worldspace changes.
Compatibility with common Skyrim mod types
The author’s compatibility guidance distinguishes between generally compatible groups, mods that need a published patch, and explicit incompatibilities.

Will AI Overhaul work with an NPC replacer?
Not automatically. An NPC replacer may change an actor’s appearance records while AI Overhaul changes that same actor’s AI Data and packages. The author states that every mod changing NPC appearance needs a patch. Install the patch made for the exact AI Overhaul version and replacer combination when one exists; do not infer compatibility from the fact that the replacer is appearance-focused.

If no patch is published, inspect the conflicting actor records in your load-order tool and decide which plugin should win each field. A patch must preserve the intended appearance while retaining the desired AI data; simply moving one plugin later can discard the other mod’s changes.
Will AI Overhaul work with a city overhaul?
Most city overhauls are listed as compatible, but “most” is not “all.” A city overhaul can alter interiors, worldspace layout, NPC placement, packages or idle locations. Because AI Overhaul adds more than 300 idle markers around vanilla city layouts and interiors, a major layout change deserves a specific compatibility check.
- Use a published city-specific patch when available.
- Check whether the city mod edits the same NPC records as AI Overhaul.
- Check whether it changes navmesh or worldspace cells, even though AI Overhaul itself does not edit navmesh.
- Test the affected city after both plugins are enabled, including schedules, sandboxing and combat reactions.
Can you install AI Overhaul mid-playthrough?
Installing the main file into a save that never had an AI overhaul is not covered by a universal guarantee. It may work, but the direct NPC edits make a backup and controlled test essential. Installing it over another full AI overhaul is the case for which the author explicitly recommends a new game.

- Remove competing full overhauls. Do not leave another comprehensive NPC AI system active while testing AI Overhaul.
- Install required patches. Apply the patches for NPC replacers, dialogue overhauls, city changes or other behavior mods that edit the same actors.
- Load a test copy. Never make the first test on your only save. Visit cities, interiors and followers affected by the plugins.
- Check behavior, not just appearance. Observe schedules, sandboxing, danger reactions, dialogue and pathing at different times of day.
- Keep the setup only if stable. If actors stand idle, fail to travel, lose their appearance or behave inconsistently, revert to the backup and resolve the conflict before continuing.
Safe procedure when updating AI Overhaul
The author’s FAQ gives a specific procedure for the main file. Treat the old save as a rollback point rather than as the save you continue to overwrite.

- Back up the current save and load order before changing the plugin.
- Install the new main-file version and its matching patches.
- Do not save over an old-version save.
- Manually delete the quicksave.
- Make a new save in a new slot and continue from that save.
- Wait 24 in-game hours so changed package data can be reevaluated.
- Test affected NPCs and locations before deleting the backup.
For AIO Lite, use a new game or a fresh save on which Lite was never active when updating. That requirement is separate from the main-file procedure.
How to choose between overlapping NPC AI mods
When comparing two behavior mods, evaluate the same five technical questions rather than relying on labels such as “lightweight” or “compatible.”

A mod that uses quest aliases may win control of an NPC even when a direct-record overhaul is installed. Conversely, a direct-record conflict can silently remove packages or appearance data when the later plugin wins. The winning behavior is determined by the final records and scripts in your load order, not by which mod you installed first.

Troubleshooting after installation or an update
NPCs ignore schedules or remain in one place
Confirm that no second AI overhaul or quest-alias mod is taking control. Recheck the actor’s packages in a conflict viewer, install the appropriate patch, and test after allowing the documented 24 in-game hours following a main-file update.

NPCs enter houses when you expected cautious behavior
This can be the intended precedence of Run For Your Lives. AI Overhaul’s cautious-danger behavior does not necessarily win when another mod explicitly sends every NPC indoors.
An NPC has the wrong face or body
Install the appearance-overhaul patch for the affected actor. A load-order change without a patch can preserve one mod’s appearance while discarding AI data, or the reverse.
City NPCs fail to navigate after a layout change
Check for a city-specific patch and verify navmesh compatibility. Restore the pre-installation save if pathing remains broken; do not assume waiting 24 hours repairs a worldspace or navmesh conflict.
The game behaves worse after replacing an old AI overhaul
Return to the backup, remove the competing overhaul cleanly and start a new game as recommended for that scenario. Continuing to overwrite the same save can preserve stale scripts or records that the new setup cannot safely undo.
Bottom line
AI Overhaul SSE does not impose one rule for every installation. A prior full AI overhaul means the author recommends a new game; a main-file update means a new save, no overwritten old save, and 24 in-game hours; AIO Lite updates require a new game or a never-used fresh save. Many settlement, follower, guard, patrol, dialogue and city-related mods are listed as compatible, but NPC appearance edits and other AI systems often need patches. Holds and Immersive Citizens are explicitly listed as incompatible, so do not stack them with AI Overhaul without an updated author-supported compatibility solution.
