Owning a PS5 disc or digital license does not turn the PS5 console build into a Windows game, and PlayStation’s PC FAQ says its PC editions are separate purchases. Cross-play and cross-save are separate features controlled by each game’s publisher: Destiny 2 and Warframe support both, Helldivers 2 supports PS5–PC cross-play but cross-save is not established by the cited official pages, and PlayStation Studios ports such as Marvel’s Spider-Man and Days Gone should be treated as separate PC saves.

What “playing a PS5 game on PC” actually means

A PS5 game runs natively on a Windows computer only when its publisher has released an official PC edition. The PS5 version is built for the console operating system; it is not a Windows executable that can be copied from the console, a disc, or a PlayStation download.

Those listings link to the relevant PC storefront, such as Steam or Epic Games Store. A title that appears only in the PlayStation console store does not automatically have a PC version.

A PS5 purchase normally does not unlock the PC edition

PlayStation’s FAQ says its PC version must be purchased separately from the PS4 or PS5 version. In practical terms, a PlayStation digital license and a Steam or Epic license are different entitlements. Before paying, open the game’s PC store listing and confirm which account owns the PC license. Cross-play and cross-save answer different questions

• Cross-play: Can a player on PS5 join the same multiplayer session as someone on PC?
• Cross-save or cross-progression: Does your character, campaign progress, inventory, or other account data follow you between PS5 and PC?

A game can support one feature without the other. Bungie explicitly warns that Cross Save and Cross Play are separate processes. A shared matchmaking pool therefore tells you nothing by itself about whether your single-player progress will appear on a computer.

PS5-to-PC support at a glance

The table separates the four checks that matter: a PC edition, the purchase relationship, cross-play, and cross-save. “Not stated” means the cited official material does not establish the feature; it is not proof that a feature can never be added.

If you accidentally link the wrong account or select the wrong active set, stop before launching the PC version and follow Bungie’s account-recovery instructions rather than creating duplicate characters.

Shared characters do not necessarily mean every purchase is shared. Expansions, season access, currencies, or other entitlements can have platform restrictions. Read the current Bungie and store terms for the exact content you plan to buy.

Warframe

Digital Extremes documents cross-platform save for PC and PS4/PS5, alongside cross-platform play across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and mobile. That combination lets you continue the same Warframe account on a computer and a PlayStation, provided the platform accounts are connected under the publisher’s current account process.

Use the game’s account-linking or cross-platform-save instructions, sign in with the account that contains your existing progress, and verify that your profile and inventory are visible before starting a new installation. Because account systems and supported platforms can change through updates, use the current Digital Extremes support article if the linking screen offers a merge, migration, or one-time choice.

Helldivers 2: cross-play is confirmed, cross-save is not

Helldivers 2 has an official PC edition and supports PS5–PC cross-play. Arrowhead’s community statement explains the practical result: “That means your teammates on PC can play with you on PS5 and vice versa.” The support information also describes cross-play and online squads of up to four players.

The cited PlayStation and Arrowhead pages do not establish a PS5-to-PC cross-save policy. Do not advertise the game as cross-progression or tell a reader that a PS5 campaign will automatically appear on Windows. If carrying progress is essential, check the latest Arrowhead support documentation immediately before purchasing or switching platforms; a later update could change the answer.

PlayStation Studios PC ports: expect a separate save

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Days Gone are official PC releases, so they can be installed and played on Windows after buying the PC edition. That does not make the PC build a continuation of the PS5 installation.

PlayStation’s current PC FAQ says PS4/PS5 save data cannot currently be transferred to the PC version of a PlayStation Studios title, or from PC back to console. The cited material also does not state platform-wide cross-play for these single-player-focused ports. Start with the assumption that achievements, settings, and campaign saves belong to the platform on which they were created unless a title-specific update says otherwise.

How to check a game before you buy or install it

1. Verify the PC release. Search PlayStation’s PC catalogue and the publisher’s current Steam or Epic listing. Confirm that the listing is for Windows and that your region can purchase or download it.
2. Check the entitlement. Read whether the PC license is included with your console purchase. For PlayStation’s PC editions, the FAQ says it is a separate purchase. For third-party games, inspect the publisher account and storefront conditions.
3. Find the title-specific multiplayer policy. Look for the exact words “cross-play,” “cross-platform play,” or “cross-generation play.” “Online multiplayer” alone does not prove that PS5 and PC users share servers.
4. Find the progression policy. Look separately for “cross-save,” “cross-progression,” “cross-platform save,” or “account linking.” If the page discusses only matchmaking, it has not answered the save question.
5. Check account and content limits. Confirm which account must be linked, whether linking is reversible, and whether expansions or currencies remain tied to a platform storefront.
6. Install and test safely. Sign in with the intended publisher account before creating a new profile. After installation, verify that the expected characters or saves appear before spending money on add-ons.

Using a controller on the PC edition

PlayStation’s PC FAQ lists mouse and keyboard, DualShock 4, DualSense, and other controllers as supported input options for PlayStation Studios PC games. A DualSense Wireless Controller is therefore an optional way to retain PS5-style controls on a computer; it is not required, because mouse-and-keyboard input and other supported controllers are also listed.

Controller support can vary by game, connection method, and storefront overlay. Check the game’s own input settings after installation, and keep a mouse available for launchers or account-linking screens that do not respond to a controller.

Common problems and what they mean

“I own it on PS5, but the PC store asks me to pay.”

That usually means the console and PC licenses are separate. Confirm that you are viewing the correct edition and publisher account, then decide whether buying a second copy is worthwhile. Do not enter a second purchase expecting the old PS5 save to transfer unless the game’s support page explicitly promises it.

“My PS5 friends cannot invite me.”

Verify that the game supports PS5–PC cross-play, not merely online multiplayer. Check that cross-play is enabled in both players’ settings, that everyone is signed into the required publisher account, and that the PC and console versions are on compatible updates. A game can temporarily disable invitations during maintenance even when cross-play is normally supported.

“The PC installation starts from the beginning.”

For PlayStation Studios PC ports, this is consistent with the current FAQ’s no-transfer policy. For Destiny 2 or Warframe, confirm that the correct publisher account is linked and that you selected the active or migrated profile. Do not overwrite or delete the original console save while troubleshooting.

“I can see my character, but an expansion is missing.”

Cross-save can expose account progress while leaving purchases subject to platform-store rules. Check the game’s entitlement page and the account that bought the expansion; avoid repurchasing until the publisher explains whether that content is portable.

A PS5 game is playable on PC only when an official Windows edition exists, and the PS5 purchase generally does not provide that PC license.
