Some PS4 accessories work with PS5, but compatibility depends on both the accessory and the game. A DUALSHOCK 4 controller can play supported PS4 games running on PS5, but it cannot control games in the native PS5 format. The PS4 Camera, PlayStation Move controllers and PS VR Aim controller remain useful for supported PS VR titles when the required Camera adaptor is used. Many USB and 3.5 mm headsets work, while licensed wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks require model- and title-specific confirmation.

Why the PS4-versus-PS5 game distinction matters
PS5 supports many PS4 games through backward compatibility, but a PS4 game and a PS5-format game can have different controller requirements. Sony allows DUALSHOCK 4 and officially licensed third-party gamepads for supported PS4 games. Sony also states that DUALSHOCK 4 does not work with PS5 games.
In practical terms, the console’s operating system can recognize a DUALSHOCK 4 without allowing that controller to send input to a native PS5 title. Developers of PS5 games may rely on features and input behavior provided by the PS5’s controller, so the restriction is intentional rather than a pairing fault.

- Look at the game’s edition on your home screen or in your library. A PS4 label means the older controller may be usable; a PS5 label means DUALSHOCK 4 is not a supported gamepad.
- A game that offers both PS4 and PS5 versions may accept DUALSHOCK 4 only when you launch the PS4 version.
- Accessory support can still vary within the PS4 catalog. Check the game’s support page when a title requires motion, tracking or a specialty controller.
DUALSHOCK 4: pairing, charging and limits
What it can do
A DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller works with supported PS4 games running on PS5. Sony’s support information says up to four controllers can connect to one console. The controller can be used wirelessly after it has been paired and has sufficient charge.
How to pair a DUALSHOCK 4 with PS5
- Turn on the PS5 and connect the DUALSHOCK 4 to the console with a compatible USB cable.
- Press the PS button on the controller. The console should register it and assign a player.
- Leave it connected until it has enough charge for wireless use.
- Disconnect the cable and press the PS button again if you want to play wirelessly.
If the controller does not appear, try another data-capable USB cable rather than a charge-only cable. Connect it directly to the console, press the PS button once, and repeat the pairing process. A controller already paired with another console may need to be connected by cable again before it can be reassigned.
What it cannot do
DUALSHOCK 4 cannot control a native PS5 game. A DUALSHOCK 4 charging station can keep the controller powered, but it does not change this game-format restriction. If a title offers a PS4 and PS5 edition, select the PS4 edition when you need to use the older controller.
Using the PS4 Camera on PS5
Supported camera models
The PS4 PlayStation Camera models CUH-ZEY1 and CUH-ZEY2 work with PS5 for supported PlayStation VR games and Move-based gameplay. They are not plug-and-play accessories: a PlayStation Camera adaptor is required to connect the PS4 camera to PS5.

The PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with PlayStation VR. For PS VR sessions on PS5, use a compatible PS4 Camera and the adaptor instead.
Camera setup
- Place the PS4 Camera so it has a clear view of the play area and the player.
- Connect the camera to the PlayStation Camera adaptor.
- Plug the adaptor into a SuperSpeed USB port on the PS5. Sony’s USB guidance identifies a SuperSpeed port for the Camera-with-adaptor connection.
- Start the PS VR-compatible game and follow its calibration or tracking instructions.
- Adjust the camera angle and player distance if the game reports tracking problems.
The adaptor requirement is separate from the camera itself. Having a CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2 camera without the adaptor does not provide a usable PS5 connection. Camera support also belongs to the game: a standard non-VR PS5 title will not suddenly gain camera controls because the camera is attached.
PlayStation Move and PS VR Aim controllers
PlayStation Move controllers and the PS VR Aim controller remain supported for compatible PS VR games on PS5. They are not universal PS5 gamepads. A particular VR title may require Move controllers, the Aim controller, a DUALSHOCK 4, or another input method, so read the game’s controller requirements before launching it.
- Use the PS4 Camera and Camera adaptor for the optical tracking setup required by supported PS VR games.
- Charge and pair each motion controller before starting the game; pairing behavior can depend on the title and the console’s prompts.
- If a game does not list Move or Aim support, plugging in the controller will not add that control scheme.
- Keep the camera’s view unobstructed and use the game’s calibration screen when tracking drifts.
These controllers are therefore a VR-specific reuse option, not a way to play ordinary PS5-format games with older hardware.

Headsets: wired, USB and wireless models
Models and connection types that work
Sony identifies its Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets as compatible with PS5. Third-party headsets connected through USB or a 3.5 mm audio jack can also work. A USB headset normally connects directly to a PS5 USB port; a 3.5 mm headset connects to the controller’s headset jack.
Basic audio and microphone functions may work even when an accessory’s extra software does not. Surround profiles, equalizer presets, button remapping and battery displays can depend on firmware or a companion application.
Wireless-adaptor pairing
- Charge the wireless headset.
- Connect its USB wireless adaptor to the PS5.
- Turn on the headset and wait for the indicator to become solid blue, following the headset’s own power procedure.
- Open the PS5 sound settings and select the headset as the input and output device if it is not selected automatically.
The headset companion app is not compatible with PS5. Configure supported profiles on a compatible device before switching to PS5, or use the headset’s physical controls. A headset can therefore provide sound on PS5 while losing app-only customization features.
When a headset does not work
- For USB models, try a different PS5 USB port and confirm that the adaptor is fully inserted.
- For 3.5 mm models, push the plug completely into the controller and check the input device setting.
- For wireless models, charge the headset, reconnect the adaptor and wait for the solid-blue indicator.
- Check the manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility notice; licensing for PS4 does not guarantee every feature on PS5.
Racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks
Officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks can work with PS5 games as well as supported PS4 games. This category has no single yes-or-no rule because compatibility depends on the exact model, firmware and title.

How to check before connecting
- Identify the complete model number, not just the product family name.
- Look for a manufacturer statement that names PS5 support, rather than a generic claim that the device works with PlayStation.
- Check the game’s store listing, manual or support page for the peripheral type.
- Install any required firmware updates using the manufacturer’s documented process.
- Connect the device before starting the game if the title only detects peripherals during launch.
A wheel may function in one racing game and be ignored by another. The same applies to an arcade stick in fighting games and a flight stick in flight simulators. Sony advises checking both the manufacturer and the specific title because not every licensed or third-party peripheral works on PS5.
USB ports, cables and adaptors
PS5 USB ports can support DUALSHOCK 4 controllers, a PS4 Camera connected through its adaptor and wireless-headset adaptors. Some devices have port-speed requirements. The PS4 Camera with adaptor should use a SuperSpeed USB port according to Sony’s USB guidance.
- Use a compatible USB cable for DUALSHOCK 4 pairing and charging. A cable that supplies power but does not carry data cannot complete first-time pairing.
- Connect a camera adaptor directly to a suitable SuperSpeed port instead of assuming every port offers identical performance.
- Wireless headset adaptors should be connected directly to the console while troubleshooting, without an unpowered hub between the adaptor and PS5.
- For third-party docks and adapters, verify the exact model. “Licensed” or “for PS4” on the packaging is not proof of PS5 support.
Port compatibility and game compatibility are separate checks. A device can be electrically recognized by the console and still be rejected by a particular game.

A DUALSHOCK 4 charging station remains useful for charging older controllers, but it does not bypass the controller’s inability to operate native PS5 games. Use a compatible USB cable when pairing or charging directly from the console.

Third-party docks, adapters, keyboard-and-mouse converters, USB hubs and specialty devices need individual verification. Sony explicitly warns that not all officially licensed or third-party peripherals and accessories work on PS5. Treat each model as a separate compatibility question rather than assuming that an entire product line transferred from PS4.
A practical decision process before you reuse or replace an accessory
- Identify the game format. Decide whether you will launch the PS4 version or the native PS5 version. This is decisive for DUALSHOCK 4 support.
- Identify the accessory model. Record the model number, connection type and whether it uses a wireless USB adaptor.
- Check special requirements. PS VR equipment may need the PS4 Camera adaptor; a headset may need its USB adaptor; some devices require a SuperSpeed port.
- Check the title. Read the game’s controller and peripheral requirements because support is often title-specific.
- Check software dependencies. Confirm whether the accessory’s companion app works on PS5. The Platinum and Gold headset companion app does not.
- Test with the simplest connection. Pair controllers by USB, connect adaptors directly to the console and remove hubs while diagnosing a problem.
This process prevents the most common mistake: buying a replacement for an accessory that already works for the intended PS4 game, or expecting a PS4 accessory to provide controls that only a native PS5 controller can provide.

Bottom line for each type of PS4 accessory
- Best reuse case: DUALSHOCK 4 for supported PS4 games on PS5.
- VR reuse case: PS4 Camera models CUH-ZEY1 and CUH-ZEY2, Move controllers and PS VR Aim for supported PS VR games, with the Camera adaptor required.
- Audio reuse case: Platinum, Gold and many USB or 3.5 mm headsets, while accepting that the companion app is unavailable on PS5.
- Specialty-control case: Licensed wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks, subject to exact model and game support.
- Replacement case: Native PS5 games, which require a supported PS5-format controller rather than DUALSHOCK 4.
So, yes: many PS4 accessories still have a useful role on PS5. The safe rule is to match the accessory to the game format, confirm any VR or adaptor requirement, and verify the exact model and title before assuming compatibility.
