Google has announced tests of ads in AI Mode and described newer ad formats, but its published explanations do not specify that website names or URLs appear in the ads. Keep that detail unverified unless a directly verifiable example or Google documentation confirms it.
What Google has confirmed about ads in AI Mode
On May 21, 2025, Google said it was starting to test ads in AI Mode. The company said relevant ads could appear below and be integrated into AI Mode responses. Google’s announcement named Performance Max, Shopping, and Search campaigns using broad match, including AI Max for Search, as eligible for the test at that time. These were announced test parameters, not a guarantee that a campaign would receive impressions or a statement that the same eligibility rules still apply. Google’s May 2025 announcement
On May 20, 2026, Google described two additional Gemini-built formats for AI Mode. It said both would be labeled “Sponsored.” The announcement describes tests; it does not establish that either format is available to every advertiser or user. Google’s May 2026 announcement
How the two announced formats differ

Google’s current Ads in AI Mode page says ads are integrated into AI-generated responses and clearly labeled as ads. It describes AI Max and Performance Max as powering new formats, but does not identify website names or URLs as a new or defining ad element.
Does an AI Mode ad show the advertiser’s website name or URL?
The available official descriptions do not answer that question. They establish that ads may appear within or alongside AI Mode responses and that Google’s 2026 announcement says the formats are labeled “Sponsored.” They do not say whether an ad includes a website name, a visible URL, both, or neither. That presentation detail should not be treated as confirmed from these announcements.
Google’s documentation about site names in Search concerns organic results. It explains that Google generates organic site names using homepage content and web references, and that a site can express a name preference using homepage WebSite structured data. It does not document the presentation of paid ads in AI Mode.

Similarly, a reported website panel for brand searches in AI Mode is a separate interface element, not proof about ad labels or advertiser URLs. Search Engine Watch reported on October 7, 2026 that such searches showed a panel with a website title, description, favicon, and sitelinks before the AI-generated response. That report describes a brand-search website panel, not a confirmed feature of an AI Mode ad.

Google’s May 2025 announcement named Performance Max, Shopping, and Search campaigns using broad match—including AI Max for Search—as eligible for its initial test. Treat that list as a description of the test when announced, not as current account-specific guidance. Eligibility does not mean an ad will serve in every AI Mode conversation, and the later format announcement does not promise placement or impressions for any individual campaign.

Google also cited a survey in its May 2026 announcement: 75% of respondents reported making faster, more confident decisions using AI Mode in Search. Google said the result came from an Ipsos Global Consumer Journeys online survey conducted in December 2025 of 13,189 online shoppers who had made a considered consumer-goods purchase in the previous week and used Google AI Overviews and/or AI Mode for shopping, across selected markets. It is Google-reported, commissioned survey research—not evidence that AI Mode ads improve outcomes.
