Usually, but only slightly. An FPS counter or hardware-monitoring overlay can consume a small amount of CPU/GPU time and add work when each frame is presented. The effect varies by game engine, graphics API, driver, overlay software and the number of sensors or graphs enabled. A game’s built-in counter is generally the lightest option; an injected overlay that polls sensors and draws a full dashboard can produce measurable changes in frame rate or frame-time consistency. There is no reliable universal figure such as “overlays cost 5%.” The only trustworthy answer comes from testing the exact overlay, metrics and game you use.
What an overlay does while you play
An overlay is a layer drawn over the game while the game is running. A simple FPS counter may calculate frames per second and render a few characters. A hardware monitor can also read GPU and CPU load, temperatures, clock speeds, memory use, frame time and latency, then update text, graphs or both.
There are two broad implementations:
- Built-in counter: The game itself calculates and renders the statistic. It normally avoids a separate injection and monitoring service, so there is less software between the game and the display.
- Injected overlay: A companion program hooks into the game’s rendering path, collects data and draws an on-screen display. This gives you more metrics, but adds background processes, sensor polling and an additional rendering step.
MSI’s documentation states that MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) must run in the background to display monitoring data in games. RTSS supplies the in-game OSD layer, while Afterburner lets you select GPU, CPU, clock, temperature and framerate metrics. NVIDIA’s App/GeForce Experience overlay can show frame rate, clock speeds, GPU temperature and latency; Alt+R toggles it.
Where performance overhead comes from
CPU work
Reading sensors, calculating averages or percentiles, formatting numbers and updating a graph all require CPU time. The cost is often tiny on a modern desktop, but a CPU-limited game, a laptop in a low-power mode or a system already running background tasks has less spare capacity. A dashboard with many rapidly changing values generally does more work than a single FPS number.

GPU and presentation work
Text and graph elements must be composited with the game image. The extra draw calls can use a little GPU time, and the overlay’s hook into frame presentation can affect synchronization. In a GPU-limited title, even a small amount of additional work may reduce the frame rate. In a game that is waiting on the CPU, GPU overhead may be invisible while frame-time spikes still appear.
Polling and update frequency
More sensors and more frequent updates increase activity. A text-only display refreshed at a modest interval is a different workload from several scrolling graphs showing temperatures, clocks, power, frame time and latency. The software and game may also behave differently when the overlay is hidden versus fully disabled, because a hidden overlay can still leave its monitoring processes active.
Compatibility and frame pacing
DirectX, Vulkan and other graphics paths expose different points for an overlay to attach. Drivers, capture hooks, window modes and anti-cheat systems can change the result from one title to another. Average FPS may remain the same while frame-time percentiles or 1% lows worsen, which feels like stutter even when the headline FPS number looks normal.

Built-in counters versus injected monitoring overlays
| Option | What it normally does | Likely overhead profile | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game’s built-in FPS counter | The game calculates and draws its own number. | Usually the lowest-complexity approach; the exact cost depends on the title. | Few metrics and little control over placement or formatting. |
| Lightweight text overlay | A separate tool draws FPS and perhaps frame time. | Small CPU and compositing cost; still depends on the hook and API. | More control than a built-in counter, but requires a background service. |
| Full hardware-monitoring OSD | Polls multiple sensors and draws text, bars or graphs. | Potentially higher CPU, GPU and presentation work, especially with many metrics. | Useful for diagnosing limits and temperatures; more compatibility variables. |
| Benchmark capture with overlay disabled | Records performance without drawing the OSD. | Designed to minimize measurement interference. | Does not show the live information you see during normal play. |
This is a practical comparison, not a promise of a fixed percentage. A lightweight display can cost more in one game than a richer display in another if their hooks interact differently with the engine or driver.
What the official guidance actually establishes
NVIDIA FrameView
NVIDIA’s FrameView User Guide says FrameView captures performance and power data with “minimal overhead so as not to impact frame rates or gameplay.” It also says the overlay is automatically disabled during benchmarking to ensure more accurate results. Those two statements are important together: the tool is designed to be light, yet NVIDIA still removes the visible overlay when collecting benchmark data. Treat an enabled overlay as part of the play configuration, not as measurement-neutral instrumentation.
FrameView reports average and percentile results, including 90th, 95th and 99th views for frame-time or FPS data, as well as latency and power. These percentile categories describe how results are reported; they are not claims about how much performance any overlay costs.

Microsoft Game Bar
Microsoft’s Game Bar design guidance describes Game Bar as a dependable overlay destination that provides utilities “without sacrificing device performance.” That is a design objective, not a cross-game guarantee or a published FPS-loss measurement. A particular game, driver or system can still show a measurable difference.

Afterburner and RTSS
MSI identifies Afterburner as the monitoring and configuration component and RTSS as the component that supplies the in-game OSD. Both must remain running for the monitoring display to appear. If you close only the visible panel, the monitoring and hook may still be active, so use the tool’s disable or exit controls when you need a true overlay-off condition.
How to test the exact performance cost
Use a repeatable procedure rather than comparing two unrelated play sessions. A built-in benchmark is ideal; otherwise choose a fixed route, replay or save point that produces similar camera movement and combat.

- Prepare a baseline. Disable every overlay and capture tool, including the game launcher’s overlay, chat overlays and the hardware OSD. Keep the same resolution, quality preset, upscaling mode, frame cap, power mode, driver version and game version for every run.
- Run the baseline repeatedly. Record average FPS and frame-time percentiles or 1% lows over several runs. One run can be distorted by shader compilation, asset streaming or a background task.
- Enable only the FPS counter. Turn on the chosen counter and repeat the same benchmark or route. Do not enable graphs or extra sensors yet.
- Enable the complete monitoring set. Add the metrics you actually use in play: for example FPS, frame time, GPU and CPU load, clocks and temperatures. Repeat the same number of runs.
- Compare frame pacing, not just the average. Look for changes in 1% lows and high frame-time percentiles as well as average FPS. A similar average with worse lows indicates a smoothness problem rather than a sustained throughput loss.
- Check repeatability. If the difference is smaller than run-to-run variation, collect more runs or use a more controlled scene before blaming the overlay.
If you use an overlay during normal play but disable it for benchmark capture, report those as two different configurations. NVIDIA’s automatic overlay-off behavior in FrameView is an example of this distinction.
How to read the result
- Average FPS falls and frame times remain consistent: The overlay is adding steady work. Reduce the number of sensors, switch from graphs to text, lower the update rate if the software allows it, or use the game’s built-in counter.
- Average FPS is unchanged but 1% lows worsen: The problem is more likely intermittent polling, compositing or a compatibility interaction. Test a simpler display and different window mode.
- Only one game is affected: Suspect that title’s rendering path, anti-cheat integration or a driver interaction rather than a universal property of overlays.
- No measurable change: Keep the overlay if its information is useful. A result that is below normal run-to-run variation is not evidence of a guaranteed zero cost in every future game, but it is practical evidence for your current configuration.
Reducing overhead without losing useful information
Start with the smallest display
Use one FPS value or FPS plus frame time first. Add GPU and CPU utilization only when you are diagnosing a bottleneck. Temperatures and clocks are valuable for thermal or power investigations but do not need to be visible every session.

Use a second monitor for convenience, not speed
A second monitor can keep graphs and configuration windows visible without covering the game. MSI presents this as a convenience feature; it does not make the overlay itself faster or increase FPS.
Disable overlays when collecting formal benchmarks
For results you intend to compare, turn off the visible OSD and any unnecessary capture layers, then document exactly what remains running. This avoids presenting an overlay-enabled result as if it represented the game alone.
Game compatibility, anti-cheat and troubleshooting
The overlay does not appear
- Confirm that the monitoring program and its OSD component are both running.
- Check that the target game executable is enabled in the OSD profile.
- Try the game’s supported display mode and API; a borderless, exclusive-fullscreen or alternate renderer can change hook behavior.
- Run the monitoring tool with the required permissions, but avoid weakening system security just to force an overlay.
The game stutters after enabling it
- Disable every metric, then add them back one at a time to identify a costly sensor or graph.
- Compare text-only and graph modes, and reduce the update frequency where available.
- Check frame-time percentiles rather than relying on the average FPS.
- Test with other overlays and recording tools disabled; multiple hooks can interact even when each appears lightweight alone.
The game refuses to launch or flags the overlay
Some anti-cheat systems restrict injected overlays. Compatibility is title-specific and can change with game or anti-cheat updates. Use the game’s built-in counter or an officially supported performance display when the title blocks third-party hooks. Do not bypass an anti-cheat restriction.
Numbers look wrong
Check whether you are viewing a capped FPS value, a menu frame rate, a render rate different from the display refresh rate, or a percentile rather than an average. Keep the same cap, synchronization settings and measurement definition across every run.
Should you turn an overlay off?
For ordinary play, leave it enabled if the information helps you tune settings, find thermal throttling or diagnose a CPU/GPU limit. Choose the lightest display that answers the question you have. For competitive play or a game where you already observe stutter, test with the overlay completely disabled and keep it off if frame-time consistency improves. For benchmarking, disable the visible overlay and record the exact capture configuration so results are comparable.
No authoritative documentation establishes one FPS-loss percentage that applies to all overlays, games and hardware. The defensible conclusion is conditional: overhead is often small, can be measurable, and must be verified with repeated runs in the target game.
