That is a capacity comparison, not evidence that the eSIM-only phone lasts 6.6% longer.
How much bigger is the iPhone 17 Pro eSIM battery?
MacRumors reported that Apple’s EU energy labels and teardown evidence confirmed these iPhone 17 Pro capacities in 2025:

The percentage is calculated against the 3,988 mAh physical-SIM figure. It describes battery capacity; it does not establish a matching gain in everyday battery life. MacRumors’ report on the confirmed capacities does not provide a controlled runtime comparison between the two versions.
Do all eSIM-only iPhone 17 models have the same increase?
No. The 6.6% figure applies to the iPhone 17 Pro, not the whole lineup. MacRumors’ 2025 comparison gives these figures:

The base iPhone 17’s physical-SIM battery capacity is not supplied in that comparison, so a SIM-versus-eSIM capacity difference cannot be calculated from these figures. The table’s values are reported by MacRumors.
Why can an eSIM-only iPhone have more battery capacity?
A physical SIM tray takes up space inside a phone. MacRumors says eSIM-only iPhone 17 models sold worldwide use space formerly occupied by the tray or an internal plastic filler for a larger battery. This is the reported physical explanation for the capacity difference; it does not mean every model’s battery grows by the same amount.

Is the reported capacity difference a leak or confirmed information?
The figures were reported in stages. Before the iPhone 17 announcement, MacRumors described alleged battery capacities from a Chinese regulatory database, citing an X post by ShrimpApplePro. At that point, the records could not be definitively tied to iPhone 17 models because Apple had stopped using obvious iPhone identifiers on battery records, although MacRumors considered the attribution plausible. The pre-announcement report therefore treated the figures as tentative.
After the announcement, MacRumors reported capacities shown on Apple’s EU energy labels, initially noting that the figures were likely for eSIM-only variants. A later report said teardown videos and energy labels confirmed most SIM and eSIM-only capacities. The 4,252 mAh versus 3,988 mAh Pro comparison is from that later reporting, rather than solely from the earlier database leak. See the later comparison.

How to compare SIM and eSIM iPhone 17 versions
- Check the exact model. The Pro comparison supports the 6.6% figure; the available base iPhone 17 figures do not include a physical-SIM capacity.
- Check the market and carrier. SIM configurations vary by market. Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications list dual eSIM support and say that configuration does not support physical SIM cards. Confirm the exact regional model and that your carrier supports eSIM before buying. Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications describe the listed SIM capability.
- Keep capacity separate from runtime. A higher mAh rating alone does not tell you how much longer the phone will last in your use. The cited reports establish capacities, not a controlled, side-by-side battery-life result.
