Not necessarily. It depends on where the video goes after it leaves the computer. A feed sent from a cloud VM to YouTube is different from a cloud server or CDN delivering a separate playback stream directly to viewers. Google Cloud lists VM-to-YouTube transfer as having no charge, while public-internet egress is priced separately. Neither rule makes a PC-versus-cloud answer universal: compare the actual delivery path, compute costs, and measured PC electricity use.
First identify who delivers the video to viewers
In the common YouTube live-stream arrangement, your PC or cloud encoder sends one feed to YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube then transcodes the live stream into different output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. The encoder’s upload bitrate is therefore not the same thing as the total playback traffic delivered to viewers.
Google Cloud’s pricing page lists transfer from a Google Cloud VM to specific Google products, including YouTube, as “No charge.” That is a specific Google Cloud transfer rule; it does not mean compute is free, does not cover every cloud provider, and does not establish that all internet traffic or channel costs are free. Google Cloud network pricing
| Setup | What to count | How to interpret egress |
|---|---|---|
| PC sends the feed to YouTube | PC electricity, any relevant internet-plan cost, and equipment costs if you include them | Viewers receive playback from YouTube; do not count the PC as directly serving every viewer. |
| Google Cloud VM sends the feed to YouTube | VM runtime and any other billable cloud services | Google lists VM-to-YouTube transfer as no charge under its named transfer rule. Other providers and network paths may differ. |
| Cloud server or CDN sends video directly to viewers | Delivered data volume, provider and region rates, plan allowances, plus compute, origin, or packaging costs where applicable | Traffic can scale with bitrate, concurrent viewers, and hours; price the actual service and destinations. |
Estimate a cloud service that delivers directly to viewers
For an approximate decimal-GB estimate, use:
viewer-data GB ≈ bitrate Mbps × concurrent viewers × hours × 0.45

This estimates delivered viewer traffic, not the encoder’s upload volume to YouTube. For an invoice-level estimate, use the provider’s unit conventions and billable-byte rules, then apply the relevant destination, usage tier, free allowance, and CDN or origin charges.
Put provider examples in context
- Google Cloud’s pricing page accessed in 2026 lists Premium Tier internet data transfer to North America at $0.12/GiB for the 1–1,024 GiB monthly tier, after the first 1 GiB/account free tier. Higher listed volume tiers show $0.11/GiB and $0.08/GiB. These are published Google Cloud rates for the stated destination and tiers, not a universal cloud price. Google Cloud network pricing
- An Amazon Web Services live-streaming guide, accessed in 2026, illustrates CloudFront viewer egress at $67.24/hour for 791 GB/hour, using 1,000 viewers at 1.8 Mbps each and an assumed $0.085/GB. AWS says the example assumes every viewer receives the highest bitrate, so treat it as an upper-range illustration, not a forecast for every audience or provider. Live Streaming on AWS cost example
- AWS separately lists a default CloudFront Premium flat-rate plan example with 50 TB monthly transfer allowance at $1,000/month on its pricing page accessed in 2026. Confirm current plan terms and availability before comparing it with usage-based delivery; the allowance does not mean every workload is covered at that price. CloudFront pricing
YouTube’s recommended encoder ingest rates are not viewer-delivery rates. For example, its official table lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps with AV1/H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. YouTube’s separate playback guidance recommends sustained connection speeds of 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD; those are playback recommendations, not guaranteed encoded bitrates. If possible, measure power under the real streaming workload. The available figures do not establish a representative wattage for a desktop or laptop, so a reliable PC bill cannot be calculated without your equipment and tariff. Keep electricity separate from internet-plan charges and any equipment purchase or depreciation you choose to include.
For a 24/7 service, use the actual billing interval: 720 hours in a 30-day month or 744 hours in a 31-day month. A precise comparison also needs the stream bitrate, concurrent audience, cloud region and delivery plan, and any applicable free allowance.

Make a fair PC-versus-cloud comparison
- Draw the delivery path. Decide whether the encoder sends one feed to YouTube or a cloud service sends playback directly to viewers.
- Match the work being compared. Include PC electricity and relevant connectivity on the PC side; include cloud runtime and any storage, packaging, origin, or delivery charges that apply on the cloud side.
- Use real operating inputs. Apply actual stream bitrate, audience concurrency, operating hours, cloud destination and plan, and measured PC watts with your electricity price.
- Keep assumptions visible. Separate estimates from quoted provider prices, note the billing period and units, and verify current rates and allowances with the provider.
There is no supported universal break-even cost or viewer count here: local electricity tariffs, PC power draw, cloud region, stream settings, and delivery architecture all vary. A cloud encoder sending to YouTube under Google’s transfer rule may avoid that particular egress charge, while direct-to-viewer cloud delivery can incur substantial traffic costs as audience and hours grow.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to loop continuously, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud rather than a home PC. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not a live camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
