Yes—calorie-restricted eating plans can help adults with overweight or obesity lose weight when they create a manageable energy deficit. But calorie restriction is not a diet name or a guarantee: the plan still needs to provide adequate nutrition, fit the person’s health and preferences, and be sustainable. Losing weight and keeping it off are also separate challenges.

What does “calorie-restricted” mean?

It means eating fewer calories than your body uses to maintain its current weight. The term does not specify a particular calorie target, food pattern, fasting schedule, or duration. A plan can use different proportions of carbohydrates, fat, and protein; the relevant question is whether it creates a safe, workable energy deficit.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) says the best eating plan is one based on sound evidence and tailored to your health, culture, preferences, and values so you can follow it over time. Its guidance is aimed at adults choosing a weight-loss program, not at prescribing one identical plan for everyone. NIDDK’s program-selection guidance explains what to look for.

Will a calorie-restricted plan work for you?

It may, if the calorie reduction is realistic and the plan is one you can maintain. The number of calories alone does not tell you whether an approach is nutritious, medically suitable, or sustainable. NIDDK’s practical principle is: “The key to losing weight is choosing a healthy eating plan that you can maintain over time.”

When evaluating a plan or program, look beyond its diet rule. NIDDK recommends checking whether it offers a healthy reduced-calorie eating plan, appropriate physical activity, guidance and support for changing habits, and a strategy for maintaining weight loss. Consider whether it fits your medical needs, food preferences, culture, budget, and access to food and support. Be cautious of promises of implausibly rapid results, such as “Lose 30 pounds in 30 days!”

What is a realistic goal?

NIDDK’s weight-loss program guidance says experts recommend an initial goal of losing 5% to 10% of starting weight within six months. That is a general goal used in program guidance, not a promise or a required result for every person. A plan should be judged by whether it is safe and workable for you, not by a dramatic claim or someone else’s outcome.

Weight loss can also change how many calories your body needs. NIDDK notes that metabolism slows during weight loss and that a person at a lower weight needs fewer calories. Continuing healthy habits and tracking progress can help with the ongoing work of weight maintenance. NIDDK’s guide to eating and activity for weight loss or maintenance covers these habits.

How should you choose and monitor a plan?

  1. Check the evidence and the details. Find out what the program asks you to eat and do, what support it provides, how it addresses maintenance, and what it costs. Ask whether its approach can be adapted to your circumstances; avoid relying on a slogan or a dramatic promise.
  2. Check personal fit and safety. Consider your health conditions, medicines, food needs, preferences, cultural practices, and access to support. If you have diabetes, another chronic condition, take medication, are pregnant, have a history of disordered eating, or have other medical concerns, discuss a weight-loss plan with an appropriate clinician or registered dietitian.
  3. Track what helps you make decisions. NIDDK notes that online trackers or smartphone apps can help record food, activity, and weight. A paper journal is another optional way to organize those records; no particular product is required or endorsed by that guidance.
  4. Plan for maintenance from the outset. Decide what ongoing habits, monitoring, activity, and support you can continue after initial weight loss. If you are in a structured program, ask how it supports weight maintenance rather than focusing only on the first phase.

Why is a very-low-calorie plan different?

A structured plan providing 800–1,000 calories per day is not simply an ordinary calorie-restricted diet with a smaller target. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) says these interventions should be prescribed only for selected individuals by trained practitioners in medical settings with close monitoring. The ADA identifies possible complications including electrolyte abnormalities, severe fatigue, and cardiac arrhythmias.

This recommendation appears in the ADA’s 2024 Standards of Care guidance for people with type 2 diabetes and overweight or obesity. The ADA states that nutritional plans creating an energy deficit can achieve weight loss regardless of macronutrient composition, but that does not make every calorie target appropriate for every person. Read the ADA’s 2024 obesity and weight-management recommendations.

What does long-term evidence show?

In its 2024 Standards of Care, the ADA reports that participants with type 2 diabetes and overweight or obesity in the Look AHEAD intensive lifestyle group had a mean weight loss of 4.7% at eight years. At that point, about 50% had maintained at least 5% weight loss and 27% had maintained at least 10%. These are results for that study population and intervention, not a prediction for every person following a calorie-restricted plan.

For people with type 2 diabetes and overweight or obesity, the ADA recommends long-term maintenance programs when available, with continued contact, monitoring, support, and physical activity. The broader lesson is that maintenance takes ongoing effort; initial weight loss alone does not establish that a plan will work well over time.

Do supplements make calorie restriction work better?

The ADA states that nutritional supplements have not been shown to be effective for weight loss and are not recommended for that purpose. A supplement should not substitute for a safe eating plan, appropriate support, or medical advice.
