Apple groups many of these features under Continuity. But owning two Apple products does not guarantee every feature will work: compatibility depends on the feature, device models, software versions, settings, and sometimes region.
What does Apple’s ecosystem do?
Continuity is Apple’s name for features that let supported Apple devices work together. It spans Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro, though each feature works with only certain device combinations. Apple says the features are built into its operating systems and many everyday apps; you generally do not need to install an extra app to get started. Signing into the same Apple Account is a common starting point, not a guarantee that every feature is available.
Apple Support puts it this way: “There’s no additional app you need to install—just sign in to the same Apple Account on each device to get started.” The feature-specific requirements still apply; Apple’s Continuity guide describes the individual options and their conditions.
Which Apple features connect your devices?

How do you use an iPhone with a Mac?
For a straightforward starting point, sign into the same Apple Account on both devices. Then check the settings and requirements for the feature you want: sharing a file with AirDrop, continuing an app task with Handoff, copying and pasting with Universal Clipboard, or using an iPhone as a Mac camera through Continuity Camera. The exact steps and compatibility conditions differ, so a successful sign-in alone does not establish that a specific feature will work.
Set up Universal Clipboard
- Sign into the same Apple Account on both devices.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices.
- Make sure Handoff is enabled on both devices.
- Confirm that both devices meet Apple’s requirements for Universal Clipboard.
- Copy supported content on one device, then paste it on the other. Clipboard availability is part of the cross-device feature; it is not a promise that every app or content type will behave identically.
Apple’s Universal Clipboard instructions list these prerequisites. A VPN configuration that blocks local networking may interfere. The page lists iOS 10 or later and macOS Sierra 10.12 or later for the device classes it describes; those minimums do not mean every newer Continuity feature works on every device meeting them.

Use Handoff to continue a task
Handoff requires the same Apple Account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and compatible devices, according to Apple’s Handoff guidance. Start with a supported app and check Apple’s current requirements if the continuation prompt does not appear.
Why might an Apple feature not work?
Continuity is a collection of features with separate requirements, rather than a blanket promise that any Apple products will connect in every way. Check the likely causes in this order:

- Device or software compatibility: Apple sets requirements by feature, including supported device generations and minimum operating-system versions. A device that supports one Continuity feature may not support another.
- Account: Many features require the same Apple Account on each device.
- Wireless settings: Some features require both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; Handoff must also be enabled for features that depend on it.
- Network configuration: Apple notes that a VPN blocking local networking can interfere with Universal Clipboard.
- Regional availability: Availability can differ by location. Apple’s reviewed Mac guide says iPhone Mirroring is not available in the European Union.
Apple’s requirements overview is the best place to check the current support table for a specific feature. Requirements can change as Apple updates devices and operating systems, so do not infer present-day compatibility solely from an older minimum-version number.

It can make a set of supported Apple devices more convenient when you regularly move between them: tasks can continue across devices, content can move without a separate transfer step, and an iPad or iPhone can serve a role alongside a Mac. Whether that is “better” depends on which features you will use and whether your particular models and software support them. Apple’s documentation establishes how the features work and their requirements; it does not establish a quantified productivity, satisfaction, or time-saving benefit.
