The company shut down and isolated the affected servers on 7 January 2023, then rebuilt the environment; it reported that users were back online by March.
What happened in the DNV ShipManager attack?
DNV said ransomware struck the dedicated servers supporting its ShipManager software on the evening of 7 January 2023. The company shut the servers down, isolated the affected environment, brought in global IT-security partners and began rebuilding the server environment. DNV described the resulting loss of online access as a disruption to customers using the service. DNV’s incident update explains the response.
ShipManager is DNV’s modular fleet-management software. It supports technical, operational, compliance and related ship-management work, and customers can use selected modules or a broader ship-management system.
How many vessels and customers were affected?
DNV estimated that approximately 70 customers operating around 1,000 vessels were affected. The European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) independently recorded approximately 1,000 ships operated by 70 maritime operators in its 2023 threat-intelligence report.

- At the time of commissioning in 2005 she was the largest container ship in the world
- Two-part hull with bow thruster, rotating Ships propeller and moving rudder
- 23 container blocks with fine details
Could the vessels still operate?
Yes. DNV said the shore-side server outage did not prevent vessels from operating: ships could continue to use ShipManager’s onboard offline functions, and no other onboard systems were affected. The disruption was to online server access, not a reported shutdown of vessel operations.
Did the ransomware spread beyond ShipManager?
DNV said it isolated the ShipManager servers from the rest of its IT infrastructure. Its forensic investigation found no impact to other DNV infrastructure, user accounts, email or services. That is DNV’s reported finding about this incident, rather than evidence that ransomware can never affect connected systems.

Was customer data stolen?
Public reporting does not establish whether data was exfiltrated. TechCrunch reported that DNV declined to comment on possible data compromise while its investigation continued. The available public information also does not establish the initial access method, attacker identity or any ransom demand, so none should be treated as confirmed. TechCrunch’s 18 January 2023 report covers the uncertainty over possible data compromise.

- Keep an offline or manual fallback usable. ShipManager’s onboard offline functions allowed ships to continue operating during the server outage. Organizations should know what work can continue without provider connectivity and practice those procedures.
- Segment critical environments. DNV’s reported isolation of the affected servers and finding of no impact to other infrastructure illustrate why boundaries between critical services and broader corporate IT matter.
- Exercise provider-outage recovery. A disruption affecting many customers at once tests more than a single organization’s backups. Customers should understand how they will work during a vendor outage, while providers need tested plans for containment, rebuilding and restoring service.
- Plan for notification responsibilities. DNV notified relevant authorities and asked customers to consider their own data-protection duties. Organizations should know who assesses notification requirements when a provider incident may involve their data.
