DMZ Early Access starts October 20 for the Modern Warfare 4 editions identified by the publisher; Campaign Early Access starts October 16. DMZ is an action-extraction mode set in the Hajin exclusion zone. You enter alone or with a squad, choose objectives, fight AI forces and rival Operators, collect equipment, then decide whether to extract safely or stay longer for better rewards and greater danger.
This guide explains the current map, mission choices, solo and squad play, PvPvE encounters, extraction rules, death penalties, the Forward Operating Base (FOB), and persistent Operator progression.
When does DMZ Early Access start?
The official Modern Warfare 4 DMZ product page lists DMZ Early Access as starting on October 20. The same page lists Campaign Early Access beginning on October 16. Those dates apply to the game editions shown on the publisher’s page, including the listed Standard and Vault editions; confirm the edition, platform and region on the store where you plan to play because availability can vary.
DMZ is a separate extraction-focused experience within Modern Warfare 4. It is not a linear campaign mission or a conventional round-based multiplayer match. Each deployment creates a new risk calculation: how much can you accomplish, what can you carry, and when can you leave before another squad or an AI force ends the run?

What is DMZ?
DMZ is an action extraction shooter built around repeatable deployments. You infiltrate the exclusion zone, pursue objectives, fight hostile forces, search for useful resources and equipment, and extract with the items you want to preserve. A successful run improves your future options; a failed run can remove valuable nonpermanent items from your backpack.
The mode supports several play styles in the same world. You can follow narrative objectives, complete multi-step operations, hunt a high-value target, gather resources, look for hidden routes, engage rival Operators, or ignore formal objectives and free-roam. The defining decision is not simply whether you can win a gunfight. It is whether the next room, contract or detour is worth the risk of delaying extraction.

What map is DMZ on?
Hajin is the current exclusion zone
The current DMZ map is Hajin. Its major areas are deliberately different, so movement and threat levels change as you cross the zone:
- Irradiated Fallout reactor: a hazardous industrial area built around the remains of a reactor.
- Highly secured Prison complex: a fortified location suited to high-risk operations and close combat.
- Remains of Hajin City: an urban ruin with environmental storytelling and multiple possible approaches.
- Heavily defended Military Base: a strongly guarded zone where direct entry can cost time, equipment and health.
Hajin also contains sealed or secret areas, traversal problems and unexpected entrances that can be reached only through water. Those routes matter because an objective is not always solved by taking the most obvious road. Exploring alternate entrances can avoid a defended checkpoint, reveal a shortcut or create an escape route, but it can also expose you to threats with limited visibility and fewer exits.

Earlier DMZ maps: Al Mazrah and Vondel
Older official DMZ material described Al Mazrah as the original exclusion zone. A later Season 04 update introduced Vondel and specified a maximum of 18 Operators—six squads of three—at one time. Those figures and locations describe the earlier implementation, not the current Hajin map. Use the current Modern Warfare 4 page as the authority for present-day locations and features.
What missions and activities can you choose?
Every deployment begins with a choice of priorities. You are not locked into a single mission type, and the same map supports narrative progress, combat, exploration and resource runs.

Before deploying, decide which outcome matters most. If you need story progress, take the equipment and route that support the next required step. If you are recovering resources, avoid unnecessary fights and leave once the backpack is worthwhile. If you are hunting a target or rival Operator, accept that the objective itself may reveal your position or force you into a contested area.
Can you play DMZ solo?
Yes. The mode allows you to infiltrate alone or with a squad. Solo play gives you complete control over movement, noise and extraction timing, but every task, revive decision and defensive angle falls on one player. A solo Operator should generally value concealment, short engagements and a clear escape route over prolonged fights.
Squad play divides attention and lets players cover entrances, carry mission items and recover from mistakes more effectively. It also increases the number of people who can be detected, heard or tracked. A squad that separates to chase different objectives may gain speed but loses mutual support when an AI force or rival Operator appears.

How do squads, PvPvE and negotiation work?
DMZ is a PvPvE conflict zone: human Operators and hostile AI forces occupy the same space. You can fight enemy factions, avoid contact, pursue rival players, negotiate or withdraw. There is no single correct response. A stealthy route can preserve supplies for a mission, while a deliberate fight may be justified if another squad blocks an extraction point or carries resources you need.
Rival Operators and the Bounty system
The Bounty system adds a risk-and-reward layer to player hunting. Pursuing other Operators raises notoriety and places a price on an Operator’s head. That can make a successful hunt more valuable, but it also increases the chance that other players will track you. Treat a bounty as a commitment: start it only when you have enough time, ammunition and an exit plan to survive the attention it creates.
Negotiation and temporary larger teams
Earlier DMZ documentation described squad assimilation through proximity chat. Rival squads could communicate, form a temporary larger team and receive friendly-fire protection. This historical mechanic explains why voice communication and negotiation became part of DMZ’s identity. The current Modern Warfare 4 page is the authority for which communication, assimilation and friendly-fire rules are active now, so do not assume every older squad feature remains unchanged.
How extraction works
Extraction is the central risk decision. Staying in Hajin can produce more equipment and resources, but every extra objective gives AI forces or rival Operators another chance to interrupt the run.
- Choose an objective and route. Identify the mission step, target or resource you want, then note at least one fallback path. Water entrances, sealed areas and defended compounds can change how quickly you reach an extraction point.
- Watch your remaining capacity and supplies. A full backpack, low ammunition or damaged equipment can turn a profitable run into a liability. Decide what you are willing to lose before entering another high-threat area.
- Reach a marked exfiltration point. Earlier official DMZ rules describe calling an extraction helicopter at marked points. Activating an exfil reveals that location to other squads and draws AI combatants, so the call is a deliberate escalation rather than a quiet exit.
- Defend the extraction window. Hold the area while the helicopter arrives. Human squads can use the revealed location to contest you, and AI pressure can prevent a clean departure.
- Use the final exfil if necessary. In the earlier implementation, once marked exfils were used, a final exfil appeared. It offered a last chance to leave, but concentrating players at one point made the end of a match especially dangerous.
- Extract or accept deeper risk. If the current haul already supports your goal, leave. Continue only when the next objective has enough value to justify exposing the items and progress you have already earned.

What happens if you die?
Death removes nonpermanent items carried in your backpack under the earlier official DMZ rules. That loss is why extraction timing matters: an item is not truly secured merely because you found it. It becomes safe when you successfully leave with it.

Extracted cash, weapons and other items are kept in Storage between matches. Contraband weapons remain permanently at risk; losing one in a failed deployment means it is gone. Weapon Blueprints are treated differently: they are not permanently lost on death, but become temporarily inaccessible. The exact current implementation should be checked against the Modern Warfare 4 rules, while the underlying principle remains the same—separate what can be replaced from what you cannot afford to expose.
What is the DMZ Forward Operating Base?
The Forward Operating Base (FOB) is the preparation and progression hub between deployments. The current FOB includes:
- A 3D Printer crafting station for producing useful items.
- The Stash for storing equipment and resources.
- Weapon purchasing facilities.
- A firing range for checking weapons and handling.
- Bounty boards for selecting player-hunt activities.
- Upgrade systems that unlock over time.
Use the FOB to turn a successful extraction into a better next deployment. Store items you do not need immediately, test a weapon before risking it, and review available upgrades before committing valuable equipment to a difficult mission.
How persistent Operators and Trait Trees work
Modern Warfare 4 adds persistent Operator development through the Active Duty menu. You maintain a roster of Operators, and each one has a persistent backpack, loadout and progression state. This makes an Operator more than a disposable match avatar: repeated successful operations shape how that character enters future deployments.
Missions award Trait Points. You can invest those points in three Trait Trees, with specializations covering areas such as:

- Combat effectiveness.
- Infiltration and movement.
- Looting and resource gathering.
- Recovery after a difficult engagement.
Choose traits that match the work you actually do. A player who avoids fights and searches for hidden routes benefits from infiltration or gathering emphasis, while someone who regularly accepts bounty hunts may value combat-oriented development. Because each Operator carries a persistent state, keeping several Operators for different roles can reduce the pressure to risk your best-developed character on every mission.
A practical deployment routine
Before infiltration
- Read the next mission step and identify whether it requires a specific Hajin region, target or item.
- Choose an Operator whose backpack and traits fit the objective.
- Visit the FOB to craft, purchase or test equipment, and store irreplaceable items you do not need.
- Agree on a squad plan: primary objective, regroup point and extraction fallback.
During the run
- Move toward the objective without taking every available fight.
- Use the environment, including water-access routes, to avoid predictable approaches.
- Communicate when a rival squad is nearby; decide whether to disengage, negotiate or contest the area.
- Reassess after each major objective instead of assuming the original plan is still safe.
At extraction
- Confirm that the items and mission progress you care about are actually secured by leaving the zone.
- Expect the exfil call to reveal your location and attract AI pressure.
- Keep a fallback route for a contested marked exfil or the final exfil.
- Do not let a nearly complete run tempt you into an unnecessary final fight.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Staying because the backpack has room
Empty capacity is not a reason to continue. If the current haul completes your purpose, extraction converts it into persistent resources; another search only increases exposure.
Treating every Operator as an enemy
Immediate combat can reveal your position and consume supplies. When the current rules permit communication or negotiation, a temporary agreement may be safer than a fight. If the other squad refuses, disengagement is still an option.
Calling exfil without preparing the area
An exfil call is visible to other squads and attracts AI under the earlier rules. Clear an approach, share the timing with teammates and keep enough ammunition for the wait.
Risking a developed Operator for a low-value objective
Persistent backpacks, loadouts and Trait Points make Operator selection part of strategy. Use a less-developed Operator for experimentation when the mission does not justify exposing your most advanced one.
Who is DMZ best suited to?
DMZ fits players who enjoy making decisions under uncertainty rather than chasing a fixed match result. It supports solo players who prefer careful routes, coordinated squads that divide tasks, explorers interested in Hajin’s hidden entrances, and combat-focused players willing to accept the visibility and danger of bounties or rival hunts.
It is less suitable if you want every match to have a predictable objective, guaranteed inventory retention or uninterrupted firefights without preparation. DMZ’s defining feature is the tension between what you have already earned and what you might still gain by staying.
