DLSS Frame Generation creates an intermediate image between two fully rendered game frames. It uses the rendered images, engine motion vectors, optical-flow data and a neural network; it does not run the game simulation a second time. That can make a game look much smoother and raise the displayed FPS substantially, but it does not make input response identical to the same FPS rendered natively. The useful question is therefore not just “What FPS does the overlay show?” but “What is my stable rendered FPS, end-to-end latency, frame pacing and image quality with the feature enabled?”

What DLSS Frame Generation actually does

A conventional game frame contains the result of one simulation and rendering step: the CPU updates the world and samples input, while the GPU draws geometry, lighting, effects and the user interface. DLSS Frame Generation inserts an additional picture between two of those real frames.

NVIDIA describes the DLSS 3 pipeline as taking pairs of super-resolution frames together with engine and optical-flow motion vectors, then feeding them to a convolutional neural network that generates an additional frame for each game-rendered frame (NVIDIA, 2022). The generated picture is a prediction of how the scene should look at an intermediate time; it is not another simulation tick and does not contain a separately calculated set of player input, physics or AI updates.

The optical-flow accelerator is important because engine motion vectors do not describe everything that moves on screen. Optical flow can help estimate motion from particles, reflections, shadows and lighting changes. A supported integration also supplies depth buffers, motion vectors and a HUD-less color buffer, and coordinates generation and presentation timing through NVIDIA’s Streamline plugin.

The two-frame input

  • Rendered color frames: the real images produced by the game, often after DLSS Super Resolution has reconstructed them.
  • Engine motion vectors and depth: per-pixel information about object movement and scene structure.
  • Optical-flow data: hardware-assisted observation of image motion that may be missing from engine vectors.
  • Neural reconstruction: the model predicts the intermediate image and inserts it into the display sequence.

Because the generated image is placed after normal rendering, Frame Generation can still add displayed frames when the CPU is the limiting factor. NVIDIA specifically describes it as a GPU post-process, so it can raise output even when the game cannot produce more fully rendered frames because of a CPU bottleneck.

Why displayed FPS can rise without equivalent responsiveness

Suppose a game renders real frames at 60 FPS, or one every 16.7 milliseconds. With one generated frame inserted between each pair, the display may receive about 120 updates per second. The simulation, input sampling and fully rendered scene still advance at roughly the original 60-FPS cadence. The extra image improves the apparent continuity of motion, but it does not provide a second opportunity for the game to read your mouse movement or controller input.

This is why “generated FPS” and input latency are separate measurements. A high overlay number can coexist with responsiveness that is closer to the underlying rendered rate. Frame pacing also matters: an unstable 45-to-70 FPS baseline can produce uneven real-frame intervals that generated images cannot repair.

What the headline performance figures mean

NVIDIA announced DLSS 3 with a vendor-stated maximum of “up to 4x” performance. Its description also says that seven-eighths of the displayed pixels in the pipeline are reconstructed by AI. Those are architectural or maximum claims, not a guarantee for every game, resolution or quality mode.

For RTX 50-series and RTX PRO Blackwell products, NVIDIA’s current developer material describes DLSS Multi Frame Generation (MFG), with a vendor-stated maximum of up to five generated frames for each rendered frame. That mode is distinct from classic one-frame insertion and depends on the game’s implementation and selected mode.

Where latency comes from, and what Reflex changes

Generating an image and inserting it into presentation adds work to the display pipeline. The effect on end-to-end latency depends on the baseline frame time, CPU and GPU queueing, the game’s integration and the synchronization settings used by the driver and game.

NVIDIA pairs DLSS 3 Frame Generation with Reflex. Reflex synchronizes CPU and GPU work to reduce queued frames, which can lower system latency on both older and newer GeForce hardware. It cannot turn a generated image into a fully simulated frame: the intermediate picture still reflects the input state from the surrounding real frames.

NVIDIA has published illustrative latency examples such as 50 ms becoming 30 ms and 25 ms becoming 18 ms in a Reflex explanation, but the same Q&A labels those numbers as not real data. They should not be treated as benchmarks for your system.

Frame Warp and competitive play

NVIDIA Research describes Reflex Frame Warp as reprojecting the final rendered frame using the most recent player input immediately before display. It is a latency-oriented technique intended for situations such as competitive games. Availability depends on the game and integration, so it is not a universal replacement for Frame Generation.

For an honest comparison, record end-to-end latency with a suitable measurement method or compare frame-time graphs and in-game responsiveness with Frame Generation on and off. Do not infer latency from the displayed-FPS counter alone.

GPU, operating-system and game requirements

Feature Supported hardware or condition What that means
Classic DLSS Frame Generation GeForce RTX 40 Series An RTX 4070, for example, has the required generation hardware when the game supports the feature.
DLSS Super Resolution GeForce RTX 20, 30 and 40 Series (NVIDIA support table) RTX 20/30 owners can use Super Resolution even though classic Frame Generation is not listed for those GPUs.
NVIDIA Reflex GeForce 900 Series and newer (where the game implements it) Reflex is a latency feature, not proof that Frame Generation is available.
DLSS Multi Frame Generation GeForce RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs NVIDIA’s developer page describes up to five generated frames per rendered frame as a maximum for supported modes.
Game support Supported in-game integration The title must implement Frame Generation; a compatible GPU alone cannot add it to an unsupported game.

Driver support and operating-system configuration also matter. Streamline version 2.14.16 documents Windows 10 20H1 or newer and hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling for its DLSS-G integration. The game must correctly tag depth, motion-vector and HUD-less color resources. Exact availability remains title-specific, and menu names differ between games.

  1. Update the GPU driver and game. Install the current driver offered for your GeForce card and the latest game patch that supports the feature.
  2. Confirm the hardware class. Classic Frame Generation requires an RTX 40-series GPU; MFG requires an RTX 50-series or RTX PRO Blackwell card. On an RTX 20- or 30-series card, look for DLSS Super Resolution and Reflex instead.
  3. Set a stable baseline. Run the game with Frame Generation off and note the real rendered FPS, frame-time graph, CPU/GPU utilization and the settings or resolution used. Stabilize severe dips before testing generation.
  4. Enable DLSS Super Resolution if appropriate. Choose the quality mode that gives acceptable image detail and enough GPU headroom. Frame Generation does not remove the need for a sensible base render rate.
  5. Turn on Frame Generation in the game’s graphics menu. The label may be “DLSS Frame Generation” or a similar title. Restart the game if it requests a restart.
  6. Enable NVIDIA Reflex when offered. Use the game’s Reflex option, commonly presented as enabled or enabled plus boost. The exact choices are game-dependent.
  7. Compare motion and controls. Pan the camera, traverse a busy area, aim at small targets and inspect menus or HUD elements. Check both smoothness and distracting artifacts.
  8. Measure again. Compare frame-time consistency and latency, not only displayed FPS. If responsiveness or image quality is worse for your use, leave Frame Generation off while retaining Super Resolution.

Image quality: where artifacts appear

Interpolation is hardest when the model must invent pixels with incomplete information. Large motion and disocclusion expose areas that were hidden in the previous frame. NVIDIA research also notes that game interfaces are absent from much natural-video training data, making HUD rendering a particular challenge.

  • Fast camera pans and rapid object movement: edges can warp or look briefly doubled.
  • Particles and transparency: smoke, sparks, foliage and translucent effects may break into trails.
  • Reflections and shadows: their changing visibility can produce shimmering or incorrect motion.
  • Lighting changes: flashes, explosions and rapidly changing illumination give the model less stable information.
  • HUD and text: reticles, subtitles or status elements can show ghosting or distortion if they are not excluded correctly by the integration.

Artifact severity varies by game, patch and implementation. Inspect the scenes you actually play rather than assuming that a clean result in one title transfers to another. If the defects are distracting, disable Frame Generation and keep DLSS Super Resolution enabled where supported.

How much GPU time does generation cost?

Frame Generation is not free. NVIDIA’s Streamline 2.14.16 engineering profiles show execution time changing with GPU, output resolution and multiplier. These are profiled examples, not universal game benchmarks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
GPU and mode 1080p 1440p 4K
RTX 4090, 2x 1.35 ms 1.78 ms 2.77 ms
RTX 5080, 2x 1.45 ms 2.04 ms 2.84 ms
RTX 5080, 4x examples not stated up to 3.61 ms up to 5.25 ms
RTX 5090 examples not stated not stated 1.07–3.32 ms across the profiled examples

The added milliseconds consume GPU time and can affect headroom for other effects. At higher resolutions, the cost generally rises in these profiles, but your game can behave differently because of its engine, quality mode and selected generation multiplier.

Should you turn DLSS Frame Generation on?

Situation Recommended approach Reason
Single-player game with stable real FPS and GPU headroom Try Frame Generation with Reflex Smoother camera motion often matters more than the small responsiveness trade-off in a non-competitive game.
Competitive shooter or precision-aiming game Compare directly with it off; use Reflex or Frame Warp where supported Input latency and artifact-free targets may matter more than a higher displayed counter.
CPU-limited open-world title Test Frame Generation Because it is a GPU post-process, it can raise displayed output when the CPU limits fully rendered FPS.
Unstable or very low baseline FPS Stabilize real FPS first Generated images cannot repair poor simulation cadence or inconsistent frame pacing.
RTX 20- or 30-series GPU Use Super Resolution and Reflex where available NVIDIA’s support table does not list classic DLSS Frame Generation for these generations.

What a high-refresh monitor can and cannot do

A high-refresh, variable-refresh-rate display, including a G-SYNC-compatible monitor, can present the available updates more smoothly and keep refresh timing aligned with changing output. It does not generate frames, increase the game’s simulation rate or remove the latency introduced by the rendering and presentation pipeline. The monitor is most useful when the GPU and game can supply a consistent range of real and generated frames that fits its refresh-rate window.

Is generated FPS “real” FPS?

It is real displayed output: the monitor receives additional images and motion can look smoother. It is not equivalent to the same number of independently simulated and rendered frames. A reported 120 FPS produced from a 60-FPS rendered baseline should be interpreted as roughly 60 simulation updates plus inserted images, with responsiveness governed by the complete pipeline. Treat vendor maxima such as “up to 4x” or “up to five frames per rendered frame” as limits under specified conditions, not as a promise for your particular game.
