DLSS 5 will not automatically work in every older game that already supports DLSS 4. NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 as a new neural-rendering feature that developers integrate into individual games. DLSS 4, by contrast, is a suite of image-reconstruction and frame-generation features. An existing DLSS 4 setting—or an NVIDIA App override for DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution—does not establish DLSS 5 compatibility.

NVIDIA announced DLSS 5 on March 16, 2026, and said it was planned for fall 2026. Its examples include already released games such as Starfield, Hogwarts Legacy, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, but the announcement is not a promise to update the entire DLSS back catalog. What is different about DLSS 5?

DLSS 4 and DLSS 5 address different parts of a game’s image pipeline. DLSS 4 is a family of neural graphics features, including Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing (DLAA), and Multi Frame Generation. DLSS 5 is announced as a real-time neural-rendering model for lighting and material appearance.

Feature What it does What that means for older games
DLSS 4 Super Resolution Reconstructs an image from a lower-resolution render. Some games and apps can use NVIDIA App model overrides; this is not DLSS 5 support.
DLSS 4 Ray Reconstruction and DLAA Other image-quality features in the DLSS suite. Availability depends on the game’s integration and applicable hardware.
DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation Generates additional frames in supported games. DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation is powered by GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and fifth-generation Tensor Cores.
DLSS 5 Uses frame color and motion vectors to add lighting and material effects while remaining anchored to the game’s 3D content. A developer must integrate it for a particular game; an existing DLSS 4 feature does not turn it on.

NVIDIA says developers can control DLSS 5’s intensity, color grading, and masking, and describes integration through its Streamline framework. That points to title-by-title implementation rather than an automatic change to every game with DLSS. NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 announcement and NVIDIA’s DLSS technology overview

Will an older game with DLSS 4 get DLSS 5?

Not unless its developer supports DLSS 5 in that game. NVIDIA’s announcement names games expected to support the feature, but does not announce a general conversion of DLSS 4 titles or promise that every older DLSS-enabled game will be updated.

The named examples span different release situations: Starfield, Hogwarts Legacy, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered are examples of released or remastered titles, while the announcement also lists newer or upcoming games such as Resident Evil Requiem, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Where Winds Meet. These are examples in NVIDIA’s announcement, not a complete or final compatibility list. Check the specific game’s update announcements and in-game graphics settings as availability changes.

What can you use in older games today?

DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution offers a separate route for supported games and apps: NVIDIA App DLSS overrides can select newer model presets. NVIDIA said in a January 5, 2026 article that these overrides were available across more than 400 games and apps. That is NVIDIA’s own count for DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution support, not a count of DLSS 5-compatible titles. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 article and guide

  1. Open the NVIDIA App and go to the Graphics tab.
  2. Select the supported game or app, then find its DLSS Override settings.
  3. Choose an available model preset for the DLSS feature you want to override.

Overrides apply to supported DLSS features; they do not add DLSS 5’s lighting and material rendering to a title. NVIDIA’s guide also says RTX 50 Series owners can enable Multi Frame Generation in games that support DLSS Frame Generation. That capability is distinct from Super Resolution overrides.

Does DLSS 5 require a new graphics card?

NVIDIA has not specified DLSS 5’s minimum GPU requirements in its March 16, 2026 announcement, nor has it stated a game-by-game performance cost. The available hardware distinction is for DLSS 4 features: NVIDIA says DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation is powered by RTX 50 Series GPUs, while its January 2026 DLSS 4.5 article describes Super Resolution as available for all GeForce RTX gamers. Neither fact confirms an RTX 50 Series requirement for DLSS 5. Do not buy a card specifically for DLSS 5 until NVIDIA publishes its requirements and the games you play confirm support. How to check what a particular older game supports

  • Look for a DLSS 5 announcement for that exact game. DLSS 4 support alone is not evidence of a DLSS 5 update.
  • Check the game’s graphics menu and current update notes. Feature labels and availability can depend on the game’s implementation.
  • Separate the feature types. Super Resolution changes image reconstruction, Multi Frame Generation creates additional frames, and DLSS 5 is described as adding lighting and material effects.
  • Match the feature to your GPU. In particular, DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation is tied to RTX 50 Series hardware; do not extend that requirement to DLSS 5 without a published specification.

NVIDIA reported more than 750 games with DLSS in its March 16, 2026 announcement. Its January 5, 2026 article separately reported over 250 games and apps supporting DLSS 4 and over 400 supporting DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution. These are vendor-reported figures from different dates and for different feature sets, so they are not directly comparable and do not show how many games will support DLSS 5.
