You can build a DIY earbuds charging case, but there is no universal circuit or contact layout that safely works with every pair. A case must charge its own battery and deliver the right power to the exact earbuds, with contacts aligned and any model-specific charging behavior accounted for. Identify the earbud model and verify its electrical requirements before choosing parts or wiring contacts.
What a charging case has to do
A true wireless stereo (TWS) case has two distinct power jobs: recharge its internal battery from an external source, then use that battery to charge the earbuds. Texas Instruments’ TWS case reference design illustrates the functions involved: USB Type-C input, battery charging, voltage boost, control electronics, and separate power paths for the left and right earbuds. It also includes protection and power-management components, an optional wireless-charging input, an LDO, and load switches.
That design is an example architecture, not a universal DIY schematic. Its stated 3.7 V, 500 mAh (1.85 Wh) battery belongs to that particular design; it is not a general specification for earbuds cases. The battery and circuit for a different build must be selected and validated for its own requirements.
Why the exact earbud model matters
There is no single cross-brand standard established by these product instructions for case contacts or charging behavior. The earbuds must physically meet the intended contacts with the correct alignment and polarity, and the case must provide an appropriate electrical output. Some products may also rely on case-detection or communication behavior that a simple pair of powered contacts will not reproduce.

- Ergonomic & Portable: Tested on 1,000+ people for a secure, all-day fit. Includes 3 sizes of silicone ear tips.We recommend using a standard 5V USB charger (5V/1A). Fast chargers are not required. Always ensure the charging port and earbuds are completely dry before charging.
Manufacturer instructions show why assumptions are risky: Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds guidance specifies placing the left and right earbuds against their corresponding case contacts, while JLab’s case guidance describes behavior for its own products. These instructions do not establish that another brand uses the same layout or charging method.
Choose a build approach only after checking compatibility
Adapting a case intended for the exact earbud model may preserve its contact geometry and product-specific behavior, but it still requires checking the battery and charging electronics. Starting from scratch offers more flexibility but puts the burden of designing and verifying the entire power path and enclosure on the builder. The available sources do not provide comparative build tests or establish one approach as best.

| Design question | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Earbud compatibility | Exact model, contact layout and polarity, required output voltage and current, and any case-detection or communication behavior. Manufacturer guidance is model-specific; see Bose and JLab above. |
| Battery and charging circuit | Cell chemistry and voltage, appropriate charge profile, protection, and whether the circuit provides the required power path. TI’s reference design demonstrates these functions but does not specify a universal replacement circuit. |
| Output stage | Whether voltage conversion is needed, along with suitable output range, current capacity, thermal behavior, and control for each earbud. |
| Enclosure and contacts | Dimensions, reliable alignment and retention, contact access, and insulation that prevents shorts. |
| Verification | Whether the assembled design can be checked against documented battery, charger, and earbud specifications before charging the earbuds. |
What a charger-and-boost module can—and cannot—do
A USB-C LiPo charger-and-boost module is a plausible parts category for prototyping the two core power functions. The category alone does not establish that a particular module is suitable, safe, or compatible with your earbuds. Before buying or wiring one, check the module documentation and verify:
- Supported battery chemistry and voltage, and the specified charging profile.
- Whether the battery has suitable protection and whether the module includes the protection your design needs.
- Output voltage range and current capacity against the earbuds’ verified requirements.
- Thermal behavior and the module’s power-path design, including how it behaves while the case battery is being charged.
- Whether separate, controlled left and right earbud power paths or case-detection features are needed.
Do not infer module compatibility from a USB-C connector, a “LiPo” label, or the presence of a boost converter. The TI reference design identifies useful circuit functions, but it does not validate retail modules for a particular earbud model.

Battery safety and first tests
Lithium cells and their charging circuits need careful handling. Amazon’s Echo Buds safety information warns against opening or modifying that battery-containing product and recommends qualified service for battery replacement. Those are Echo Buds-specific manufacturer instructions, not a complete construction standard for a DIY case.
- Use the actual battery and charger component manufacturers’ specifications; include suitable protection, and do not use damaged or unidentified cells.
- Verify the input supply requirements against the selected circuit instead of assuming any USB source is suitable. Bose, for its QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds case, calls for an agency-approved power supply that meets applicable local requirements.
- Do not leave an initial prototype test unattended. Stop if the battery or circuit behaves unexpectedly, becomes unusually hot, or shows damage.
Recommendations are model-specific. Xiaomi says to use a standard 5 V charger and gives a 0–45 °C charging range for Buds 6. Those values apply to that product, not to all earbuds or homemade cases.

A practical order of work
- Identify the earbuds. Record the exact model and find its manufacturer’s charging instructions. Establish contact layout, polarity, output voltage and current requirements, and any case-detection behavior before designing the case.
- Specify the battery. Select a cell whose chemistry, voltage, capacity, and protection fit the intended design; do not copy the example battery from TI’s reference architecture without checking the build’s needs.
- Choose and verify the power path. Confirm that the input charger, battery management, any boost conversion, and earbud outputs all match their respective manufacturer specifications. Check current capacity and thermal behavior, not just nominal voltage.
- Design the physical case. Lay out contacts so each earbud seats against the correct terminals, stays aligned, and cannot short against other conductive parts.
- Test incrementally. Verify the input and battery-charging functions, then check the earbud output against the model’s requirements before connecting the earbuds. Monitor the first charging tests rather than leaving the prototype unattended.
