If Distill.io is not working in Firefox, start with the monitor’s latest check log: open View Details and use the error and captured snapshot to choose a fix. A missing toolbar icon, a local monitor launched from the wrong Watchlist, a stale selection, and a blocked or timed-out page are different problems—not all extension-installation failures.
1. Find the error and confirm where the monitor runs
- Open Distill’s Firefox extension and its Watchlist. Find the affected monitor and open its check log.
- Select View Details on the latest check. Read the reported error and inspect the captured snapshot to see what Distill actually loaded or selected.
- Confirm whether the monitor is local or cloud-based, then run it from the matching device or interface. A local check uses your browser and device; a cloud check runs on Distill’s servers. Distill says the latest check determines the monitor’s state, so an error on that check places the monitor in Error. See Distill’s monitor-error guidance and current platform details.
Distill’s community forum includes a March 2025 Firefox support case in which the message “Local monitors can’t be run from the web app” was resolved by switching to the Firefox local Watchlist. That example illustrates a possible interface mix-up; it does not establish the cause of every Firefox error. Read the case.
2. Fix a missing Distill toolbar button
If the extension appears installed but you cannot find its button, check Firefox’s extension controls and toolbar customization. Drag the Distill icon onto the toolbar so it is easy to open the extension and its Watchlist. Distill’s Firefox add-on documentation notes that browser-based monitoring depends on Firefox being open: “When your browser (Firefox) is not open, your webpages will not be monitored.” Distill’s Firefox add-on guide.
3. Match the error code to the remedy
Use the exact code shown in View Details as a starting point, then verify the snapshot and monitor setup. A suggested remedy is not a guarantee: sites, sessions, and page behavior differ.

4. Choose local or cloud monitoring for the site
Neither mode is best for every page. Choose based on how the target site behaves and which environment can access it:
- Use a local Firefox monitor when the site needs an active browser tab, a local login session, or access that works from your device but not from Distill’s cloud. The browser and device must be available for checks.
- Use a cloud monitor when the page is accessible from Distill’s servers and you do not want checks to depend on your device being on. Cloud monitoring can fail when a site blocks cloud access.
- Consider a proxy or dedicated cloud device only when the specific error and site behavior point to access restrictions or authentication that the ordinary execution location cannot satisfy.
Distill’s platform page lists minimum check intervals of two minutes for its Web App Flexi plan and five seconds for the browser add-on. 5. If checks run but no alert arrives
First confirm that the latest check succeeded. An errored check cannot detect a new change. If it succeeded, follow the alert chain in order:
- Check whether the expected change appears in Change History.
- Confirm that the monitor’s alert conditions are met; a change can exist without satisfying the configured condition.
- Verify that the expected alert action is configured.
- Check whether available quota remains.
