What changed with Google Play/YouTube and Movies Anywhere?
Movies Anywhere connects participating digital retailer accounts so eligible movie entitlements can appear across connected libraries. When Google Play/YouTube stopped participating on October 31, 2025, the expected cross-store syncing involving Google was disrupted. The change concerned Movies Anywhere participation; it did not, by itself, mean that every movie a customer had already bought from Google became inaccessible.

Movies Anywhere’s official participant page, dated June 8, 2026, lists Google Play/YouTube as a digital retailer again. Its terms, updated July 21, 2026, also list Google Play/YouTube and describe automatic sharing of eligible entitlements between connected accounts. This establishes that Google is listed currently on those pages, but not the precise date service resumed or whether affected transactions were backfilled.

Did Disney and Google cause the Movies Anywhere interruption?
The timing linked the Movies Anywhere change to the broader Disney–Google dispute, but no joint Disney/Google statement establishes the precise reason Movies Anywhere participation stopped. Google’s October 30 announcement addressed its expired Disney agreement and the availability of Disney content for purchase or rental on YouTube. The November 15 announcement addressed the deal to continue carrying Disney channels on YouTube TV. Neither statement explains the Movies Anywhere withdrawal, so the connection should be treated as context and timing rather than a confirmed explanation.

Can you still access movies you already bought?
Google’s October 30, 2025 post said existing purchases and rentals remained accessible even as Disney movies and shows became unavailable for new purchase or rental on YouTube. That statement concerns Google/YouTube access to existing transactions; it does not guarantee that every eligible purchase made during the Movies Anywhere interruption was synchronized to other connected retailers. Movies Anywhere’s current listing of Google does not establish retroactive syncing for those transactions.
For a specific title, check both the Google/YouTube library and the connected retailer libraries. If a title is missing from another library, confirm that it is Movies Anywhere-eligible and that the relevant accounts are connected. Movies Anywhere describes shared entitlements as licenses acquired legitimately, with participation and title availability dependent on the studio and retailer.

As of the Movies Anywhere terms updated July 21, 2026, the listed digital retailers are Apple iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango, Google Play/YouTube, Xfinity, Verizon Fios TV, and DIRECTV. Being listed does not make every title on a retailer eligible for Movies Anywhere: eligibility depends on the participating studio and retailer. Movies Anywhere accounts are available only to eligible users in the United States under the service’s terms.
Movies Anywhere also supports redeeming eligible digital codes included with Blu-ray or DVD combo packs. This can be an alternative route to add a title to connected libraries, but check the code and title’s eligibility before buying or redeeming; a physical release does not automatically guarantee Movies Anywhere participation. The service describes its account connection, purchase, viewing, and code-redemption options on its welcome page.

What to check before expecting a movie to sync
- Retailer participation: Confirm that the store is listed by Movies Anywhere; Google Play/YouTube appears on the official pages dated June and July 2026.
- Title eligibility: Check whether the specific movie is supported. Retailer participation alone is not enough, because title availability varies by studio and retailer.
- Account connection: Make sure the retailer account is connected to Movies Anywhere so eligible entitlements can be shared.
- Purchase or code status: Verify that the transaction or redeemed digital code represents an eligible entitlement. A code included with a Blu-ray or DVD pack is not necessarily eligible just because it is included.
- Region: Movies Anywhere account eligibility is limited to the United States under its terms.
