Short answer: Dinghai: The Ocean Pillar is an announced 2026 PC roguelike action RPG inspired by the Classic of Mountains and Seas. It shares a Chinese-mythology focus with Black Myth: Wukong, while WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers is the closer comparison for a darker, combat-led action game set in a supernatural version of historical China. Dinghai’s announcement does not yet verify a Soulslike structure, run rules, progression systems, boss design, or difficulty model, so comparisons should stop at the confirmed premise, genre label and platform plan.

What Dinghai: The Ocean Pillar is, based on the announcement

Setting: the Classic of Mountains and Seas

Dinghai is set in the mythic world associated with the Classic of Mountains and Seas, an ancient Chinese text known for its catalog of unusual regions, creatures and supernatural geography. That gives the game a different reference point from stories built around a single famous hero. The announcement identifies the setting inspiration, but it does not establish which creatures, chapters, characters or legends will appear in the finished game.

Format: a roguelike action RPG

The announced genre label combines real-time action with role-playing progression and a roguelike format. “Roguelike” can describe very different designs: some games use repeated runs, randomised rooms, permanent upgrades, temporary builds or a reset after defeat, while others borrow only selected elements. Dinghai’s cited announcement does not say which of those rules it will use. It therefore cannot yet support claims about run length, procedural generation, meta-progression, permadeath, selectable characters, equipment rarity or cooperative play.

Platform and timing

Dinghai is announced for PC via Steam in 2026. That is a release window, not a day-and-date commitment. No specific month, launch price, console version, early-access status or physical edition is established in the announcement described here. Readers looking for a preorder date should wait for an official store page or a direct publisher/developer update.

Is Dinghai like Black Myth: Wukong?

The clear overlap is mythology-first presentation

Black Myth: Wukong is an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and based on Journey to the West. Both games consequently use Chinese mythic material as a central identity rather than as a decorative side element. If your question is whether Dinghai belongs to the same broad cultural and fantasy space, the answer is yes.

The source traditions are not interchangeable. Journey to the West is a narrative pilgrimage centered on a well-known literary cast, whereas the Classic of Mountains and Seas is a compendium of places, beings and marvels. Dinghai may therefore feel more like an exploration of mythic ecology and strange geography, but that is an expectation based on the source text, not a confirmed description of its levels or story.

The announced formats point in different directions

Wukong is identified as an action RPG. Dinghai is specifically identified as a roguelike action RPG. That extra label matters: it suggests that repeating attempts and run-level decision-making could be important, but the announcement does not reveal the implementation. It would be inaccurate to describe Dinghai as a Wukong-style linear action adventure, or to claim that Wukong has Dinghai’s run structure.

Availability is already different

Wukong has a documented physical PS5 edition dated December 12, 2024. Dinghai, by contrast, has only an announced 2026 PC/Steam plan in the information currently available. This is a practical distinction for buyers: Wukong is an existing console product, while Dinghai remains a future PC release with launch details still to come.

How WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers compares

A historical setting with supernatural horror

WUCHANG takes place during the final years of China’s Ming Dynasty. Its official description places the protagonist in an epidemic of plague and monsters connected to the Feathering phenomenon. This is not a mythological adaptation in the same sense as Wukong or Dinghai; it uses a historical period as the foundation and adds supernatural threats.

That makes Wuchang the stronger reference if what attracts you to Dinghai is a grim atmosphere, hostile creatures and a world where combat is tied to a mystery. It is not evidence that Dinghai will share Wuchang’s tone, historical grounding or horror elements.

Combat information is more explicit

WUCHANG’s official site specifically describes chaining melee strikes, spellcasting and weapon techniques into devastating combos. It also mentions hidden weapons, ancient firearms and the power of Feathering. Those statements establish a hybrid combat vocabulary for Wuchang. Dinghai’s announcement does not provide an equivalent move-set breakdown, so no direct claim about weapons, spells, firearms or combo systems can be made for Dinghai.

Platform coverage

505 Games lists WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. That is a substantially broader confirmed platform list than Dinghai’s announced PC/Steam target. If you need a game you can play on a current console or through Game Pass, Wuchang is the only one of these three with that support explicitly listed in the available product information.

Is Dinghai a Soulslike?

There is not enough confirmed information to call Dinghai a Soulslike. The announcement uses “roguelike action RPG,” not “Soulslike,” and does not document the features readers usually use to identify the latter: checkpoint-based progression, dropped currency on death, stamina management, deliberate invulnerability timing, corpse recovery, interconnected level design or boss-run structure.

Those missing details are not minor. A roguelike can emphasise randomised runs and build experimentation, while a Soulslike generally describes a persistent world organised around repeated combat practice, resource risk and demanding encounters. A game could combine both approaches, but Dinghai’s announcement does not establish that it does.

The most accurate description today is therefore “an announced roguelike action RPG set in the world of the Classic of Mountains and Seas.” Treat any Soulslike comparison as a watchlist question for later previews, demonstrations or a full feature announcement, not as a settled genre classification.

Which game should you play for a particular preference?

Choose Wukong for a released mythology-led action RPG

Wukong is the straightforward choice if you want an available action RPG built around Journey to the West and Chinese mythology. Its physical PS5 edition provides a concrete console release reference, unlike Dinghai’s future PC target. The available information here does not justify a detailed ranking of their combat systems or narrative quality; the useful distinction is that Wukong is an established product and Dinghai is still announced.

Choose Wuchang for explicit hybrid combat and late-Ming atmosphere

Wuchang fits players who prioritise a supernatural historical setting and a combat description that explicitly combines melee, spells and weapon techniques. Its listed support for Xbox, PlayStation, PC storefronts and Game Pass also gives it the broadest confirmed access options among these comparisons.

Watch Dinghai if repeated runs and mythic bestiary appeal to you

Dinghai is the one to track if the combination of the Classic of Mountains and Seas and a roguelike action-RPG format is the main attraction. The premise is distinctive, but the announcement does not yet tell you whether runs are short or long, how much persists between attempts, or how builds are assembled. Those are the details that will determine whether it suits your preferred style.

  • Build depth: Are there classes, weapons, skill trees, relics, status effects or mutually exclusive upgrades?
  • Bosses: Are encounters fixed, randomised, optional or tied to specific run paths?
  • Solo and online features: Is it strictly single-player, or are co-op and other online modes planned?
  • Launch details: What are the release date, price, system requirements, language support and post-launch plans?
  • Platforms: Does the Steam announcement remain PC-only, or will consoles be confirmed later?

Until those points are documented, screenshots or a mythology comparison can explain the game’s identity but cannot predict its moment-to-moment feel.

Release and buying guidance

What “2026 on Steam” means

The current announcement supports only a 2026 PC release through Steam. It does not establish a final date or pre-order availability. Avoid treating retailer pages, speculative listings or social-media dates as confirmation unless they are tied to an official storefront or a direct announcement from the game’s publisher or developer.

Physical editions and pricing

Wukong has a documented physical PS5 edition dated December 12, 2024. For Dinghai, physical distribution, pricing and any partner arrangement are not confirmed by the cited announcement. A future Steam page should be the reference for the digital launch price and system requirements once those details are published.

Bottom line for comparison shoppers

Dinghai occupies an interesting but still undefined space: a 2026 PC roguelike action RPG drawing on the Classic of Mountains and Seas. Wukong is the closest comparison for a released, mythology-first action RPG tied to a famous Chinese literary tradition. Wuchang is the better comparison for supernatural historical atmosphere, explicit melee-and-spell combat and broad confirmed platform support. Dinghai should not yet be labelled a Soulslike, and its eventual appeal will depend on run rules, progression and combat systems that have not been detailed.
