Dinghai: The Ocean Pillar is a single-player action RPG with roguelike runs, dual-weapon combat, and a mythic world inspired by the Classic of Mountains and Seas. You play the Abyssal Dragon in Yi’s body, choose two weapon types, switch between them during a run, and combine abilities, Adornments, and Vessels. The Windows demo is available now, while Steam still lists the full game as “Coming soon.” This guide explains the systems a new player can use immediately, how to navigate with Waystones and the compass, and what the October 16, 2026 demo update added to Heyang.

What is Dinghai: The Ocean Pillar?

Dinghai: The Ocean Pillar is a single-player action RPG built around repeated, escalating runs. Its setting takes visual and mythic inspiration from the Classic of Mountains and Seas: storm-lashed mountains, celestial islands, strange creatures, and a journey that becomes more dangerous as you push farther. The player is the Abyssal Dragon, occupying the body of Yi.

Each run is a self-contained attempt through changing encounters and choices. You select weapons and abilities, collect combinations of Adornments and Vessels, fight through a route, and learn from failure. Death is part of the progression loop rather than a conventional game-over that erases all understanding. The official store description summarizes the structure this way:

Current availability

Steam lists the complete game as Coming soon; no final release date is established in the published listing. A free Windows demo released on August 24, 2026. At the indexed 2026 snapshot, the demo had 135 user reviews, with 80% marked positive. Review totals and the store listing can change, so treat those figures as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent rating.

What the game expects from beginners

Dinghai does not ask you to memorize a fixed campaign route before you start. It asks you to make decisions under pressure: which of your two weapons is best for the current space, which ability improves that pair, whether a detour is worth the risk, and when to stop pushing. A good first objective is not a flawless clear. It is learning how your chosen pair handles distance, crowds, recovery windows, and boss patterns.

How does Dinghai’s combat system work?

Two weapons, one active fighter

At the center of combat is a dual-weapon system. You equip two weapon types, switch between them during a run, unlock abilities, and build combinations with Adornments and Vessels. The named weapon families in the store description include swords, dual blades, and bows.

The two slots should be treated as a single loadout rather than two unrelated inventories. One weapon may give you a safer way to approach, while the other may be better once enemies are grouped or a boss exposes an opening. The useful question is not “Which weapon is strongest?” but “What problem does my second weapon solve?”

How do I switch weapons?

Equip two weapon types before or during the relevant loadout screen, then use the game’s weapon-switch command to move between them in combat. The published description confirms that switching is a core action, but it does not state one universal keyboard key or controller button. Input prompts can also vary with the active control scheme.

To find the exact binding in your build:

  1. Open the pause menu from a run.
  2. Choose Settings or Controls and select the keyboard or controller layout you are using.
  3. Locate the action labeled Switch Weapon, Weapon Swap, or an equivalent wording.
  4. Practice the input in a low-risk encounter before relying on it against a boss.

If the displayed prompt does not match your hardware, check whether the game has detected a controller, then review the active layout again. Do not assume a keyboard shortcut from another player’s setup is universal.

Build abilities around the pair

Every run presents new choices. When an ability, Adornment, or Vessel appears, ask whether it strengthens one of your weapons, covers a weakness, or rewards switching. A ranged option that leaves you vulnerable at close distance may need a defensive or mobility complement; a fast melee option may benefit from tools that help you reach a target safely. These are decision rules, not a hidden tier list: the available published material does not establish an objectively optimal weapon or build.

What Adornments and Vessels are for

Adornments and Vessels are the combination layer of the run. The game’s description presents them as parts of a system for discovering powerful combinations, so read their actual effects instead of choosing only by rarity or name. In the first few runs, take notes on three things:

  • Whether the effect changes damage, survivability, mobility, or resource management.
  • Whether it benefits one weapon, both weapons, or the act of switching.
  • Whether it is reliable in ordinary encounters or only useful in a narrow situation.

After a death, keep the pair that felt understandable and change one major variable. Changing weapons, abilities, Adornments, and Vessels all at once makes it difficult to tell what helped.

Weapon-pair planning without a tier list

No official ranking of the named weapons has been published. You can still compare pairs consistently by recording how they behave in the situations that decide a run. Use the following as a testing framework rather than a claim about hidden statistics.

Comparison axis Questions to answer during a run Why it matters
Switching speed Can you swap before an enemy reaches you, and does the transition leave you exposed? A slow or risky swap changes when the second weapon is practical.
Range Can one weapon damage or pressure targets that the other cannot safely reach? Different distances require different approaches and retreat timing.
Crowd control Which weapon handles several enemies, and which is better for a single target? Rooms and boss phases can demand different patterns.
Survivability Which option lets you recover, evade, or keep space when a mistake occurs? A high-damage tool is less useful if it repeatedly forces damage trades.
Adornment and Vessel fit Do your offered effects reinforce one weapon, both, or the swap itself? A theoretically strong weapon can underperform when the run offers no supporting effects.

A practical way to test swords, dual blades, and bows

Start with one close-range weapon and one option that changes your engagement distance, then observe the result rather than assuming an archetype is superior. On the next run, try a different pair and keep the route and note-taking method similar. Record how quickly you clear a crowded room, how often you take unavoidable damage, and whether your abilities create a coherent rhythm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if a pair gives you excellent damage but no comfortable answer when several enemies surround Yi, prioritize an Adornment or Vessel that improves control, defense, or repositioning. If you spend most of a run waiting for a safe opening, look for an ability that lets you maintain pressure without standing in danger. The goal is a pair whose strengths and supporting effects are available often enough to use, not a theoretical maximum shown in an isolated test.

What should I do in my first run?

  1. Choose one weapon pair and commit to learning it. Do not change both slots every time a room feels difficult. Familiarity makes it easier to identify whether the problem is positioning, timing, or the loadout.
  2. Learn the swap in a safe encounter. Confirm the control binding, watch Yi’s animation, and notice whether you can switch while moving or only during a particular action.
  3. Take the first useful, understandable ability. Prefer an effect whose trigger and benefit you can recognize. A simple improvement you can activate consistently is more educational than a complicated effect you cannot read in motion.
  4. Map the route mentally. Notice forks, landmarks, and Waystones. If a stage becomes confusing, stop advancing blindly and use the compass described below.
  5. Test one new interaction at a time. If an Adornment appears to reward switching, deliberately alternate weapons and see whether the result is worth the risk.
  6. Preserve information after a death. Write down the weapon pair, the most useful effect, the room or boss pattern that ended the run, and one change for the next attempt.

Your first successful milestone can be as small as reaching a new section with more health, recognizing an enemy tell, or finding a Waystone without backtracking. Roguelike progression is cumulative learning; a failed run that answers a specific question is still productive.

How to spend choices during the run

  • Does the reward solve a weakness that has already cost you health?
  • Does it work with both weapons, or at least with the weapon you use most often?
  • Can you activate it under the pressure of a normal encounter?
  • Will it remain useful if the next room or boss changes the distance and enemy count?

Avoid building around an effect that requires a situation you rarely create. The best early-run choice is usually the one that makes your basic plan more reliable.

How do I find the Waystone?

The October 16, 2026 demo update added a compass to make Waystones easier to locate. Press M on a keyboard, or press D-pad Down on a controller. Yi will fly toward the Waystone along a golden trail.

  1. Stop in a safe position if the route is crowded.
  2. Press M or D-pad Down.
  3. Follow the golden trail rather than guessing from the camera angle.
  4. Use the Waystone as a navigation landmark, then resume exploring or advancing when you understand the route.

The compass is a direction aid, not a replacement for combat awareness. Enemies can still attack while you are orienting yourself, so use it between encounters when possible. Make a mental note of each Waystone’s position; recognizing the landmark on a later run reduces unnecessary detours.

Mid-stage saving

The same October update added mid-stage saving. This is particularly useful when a run reaches a complex route or you need to stop before completing the stage. Saving should not be confused with a permanent replacement for run progression: the published details establish the feature’s addition, but do not specify every rule governing save slots, restart behavior, or what happens after a completed run.

Exploration advice for the mythic world

Dinghai’s environments draw on a world of celestial islands and storm-lashed mountains. Exploration is therefore part of the run’s risk calculation, not merely a corridor between fights. When a route branches, decide whether you are looking for a safer path, a stronger reward, a Waystone, or information about the region. If you cannot name the reason for a detour, mark the junction mentally and continue along the clearer route first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the environment to manage encounters

Give yourself room before starting a fight when the terrain allows it. A weapon pair that feels comfortable in an open space may become awkward near a boundary or on a narrow approach. Entering a room with the camera already oriented toward the next exit also makes the compass and retreat decisions easier to use.

Treat each run as a map-learning loop

After an unsuccessful attempt, separate navigation mistakes from combat mistakes. If you lost time because you missed a branch or Waystone, improve your route memory on the next run without changing your build. If you found the route easily but repeatedly lost health in the same type of room, keep the route and adjust the pair or supporting effects.

What is new in Heyang?

The October 16, 2026 demo update added the Heyang stage. It also introduced the following content:

  • Xingtian, a new boss.
  • Zouwu, a hidden boss.
  • Aquasunder Dual Blades, a new weapon.
  • New Vessels.
  • The Zouwu Spirit Beast.
  • The Xiushe, Dijiang, and Zouwu Divine Skills.
  • Mid-stage saving and the compass navigation feature.

How to approach Heyang as a beginner

Do not treat the new stage as a checklist to rush through. First, learn its route and identify where the compass points. Then test how your pair performs against ordinary encounters before committing to a boss attempt. Keep one run focused on navigation and another on combat observation if the region feels overwhelming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xingtian is the named boss associated with the update. Zouwu is described as hidden, so finding it may require exploration rather than following the most direct route. The update also adds a Zouwu Spirit Beast and Divine Skills named for Xiushe, Dijiang, and Zouwu; read each effect in your current build because the published announcement does not provide a complete balance breakdown or a recommended combination.

What is not yet confirmed about Heyang

The demo update is not a guarantee that every numerical value, reward balance, encounter placement, or feature will remain unchanged in the full release. The available information does not establish Heyang’s final reward economy or confirm that every demo addition will ship unchanged. Plan around the current demo, but avoid treating it as the final version of the region.

Progression, death, and improving between runs

The official description says that death advances understanding and strength rather than ending progression. In practical terms, each attempt should produce at least one durable lesson: an input you can execute, a route you can recognize, a boss tell you can avoid, or a combination worth repeating.

Use a small experiment log

For every run, record:

  • Your two weapons and the order in which you used them.
  • The most useful ability, Adornment, or Vessel and what it changed.
  • The first room or boss phase that consistently caused trouble.
  • Whether the compass or a Waystone saved time.
  • One change for the next attempt.

Five short notes are more useful than a vague conclusion that a build “felt bad.” They let you distinguish a weak combination from an execution problem and keep your next run focused.

When to stop pushing

If health is low and a route offers a choice between unfamiliar danger and a known path, use your notes and current build to decide rather than chasing every reward. A cautious retreat that preserves information can be more valuable than a risky fight that teaches nothing new. Because the game is structured around repeated runs, consistency is a legitimate form of progress.

PC requirements and controller support

Steam lists the following Windows requirements. The minimum and recommended rows are quoted as store-page specifications; they are not independent performance tests.

Component Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 11 Windows 11
Memory 16 GB RAM 32 GB RAM
Processor AMD Ryzen 3 3100 or Intel Core i3-10100 AMD Ryzen 5 5600 or Intel Core i5-12400
Graphics Radeon 780M, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, or GeForce GTX 1650 Radeon RX 6700 XT, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, or GeForce RTX 4060
Storage Not stated in the published requirements An SSD is recommended

The store page tags the game as controller-supported and single-player. A controller is optional; no particular model is officially endorsed. If you use one, verify the switch-weapon and compass prompts in the in-game control screen rather than relying on a generic layout.

Before launching the demo

  • Install it on a Windows 11 system that meets at least the listed minimum CPU, GPU, and memory specifications.
  • Use an SSD if possible, especially if your system is near the minimum specification.
  • Close memory-heavy background applications when testing performance.
  • Confirm that your graphics driver and Windows installation are current.
  • Connect your controller before launching if you want the game to detect it automatically, then check the controls menu.

Common beginner problems and fixes

“I cannot find the Waystone.”

Press M on keyboard or D-pad Down on controller and follow the golden trail. If the trail seems to lead through danger, move to a safe position first and then reorient. The compass was added specifically to address unclear routes, so use it instead of repeatedly circling the same landmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“My weapon swap does not work.”

Pause the run and check the active keyboard or controller binding for Switch Weapon. Make sure two weapon types are equipped. If the prompt still does not respond, reconnect the controller or restore the default layout, then test the action in a low-risk room.

“I keep losing health before I can use my build.”

Change your decision order: take a defensive, mobility, or range-supporting effect before a narrowly specialized damage effect. Practice entering a room with space to retreat, and switch weapons before you are surrounded rather than after the attack begins.

“The demo runs poorly on a system near minimum.”

Compare your hardware with the published minimum, close background applications, lower available graphics settings, and verify that the game is installed on a healthy drive. If the problem persists, record the exact hardware, Windows version, graphics driver, and in-game setting so technical support can reproduce it. The listed requirements do not guarantee a particular frame rate.

“I expected Heyang’s content to match a final release.”

Remember that Heyang is part of the October 16, 2026 demo update. Reward balance, encounter details, and other content can change before the full game ships, which Steam currently lists only as Coming soon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A compact first-session checklist

  • Confirm the weapon-switch binding before entering a difficult room.
  • Choose one pair and keep it for enough encounters to learn its rhythm.
  • Read each ability, Adornment, and Vessel for its actual trigger and benefit.
  • Use the compass with M or controller D-pad Down when the route becomes unclear.
  • Mark Waystones mentally and use them as navigation landmarks.
  • In Heyang, learn the route before deliberately seeking the hidden Zouwu encounter.
  • After death, change one major variable and keep a short note about what happened.
  • Check the requirements and control layout if performance or input feels inconsistent.

What to expect from the demo right now

The demo offers a focused look at Dinghai’s central promise: repeated runs in a mythic setting, a two-weapon combat rhythm, and builds shaped by changing choices. The Heyang update broadens that sample with a new stage, bosses, weapon, Vessels, Spirit Beast, Divine Skills, saving, and navigation help. It is enough to learn the game’s decision-making without pretending that the demo defines the final balance or release scope.
